DVD/Blu-Ray Extras for Series 3

A November 3 release date would definitely be aimed at the Christmas market -- understandable, since they just missed last Christmas.

Nothing on Amazon (UK or US) yet, though.  Wonder where William Martin got his info?  I don't see where he credits his source.

It's a great set but out of my price range unfortunately. Shame, as the Cultbox article read to me like it was just going to be a new series 3 boxset with the new extras. No mention of the busts, art cards and S1 and 2.

I suspect the BBC Shop page was the source of the information, and the author of the article either misunderstood or oversimplified.  I wouldn't be at all surprised if the BBC really milked the Christmas market, and after that offered the seasons separately and/or started offering the set through Amazon (at a lower price).

I'm not particularly interested in the busts or the cards, but would definitely like to have those DVDs.

Thank you for clearing this up, Carol!

Yeah, previous statement aside, I'll definitely pass this one, too. There's shelling out cash twice and then there's that price point.

All I would want is Many Happy Returns. I don't like watching stuff like outtakes or audio commentary or even a making of, because it kind of ruins the episodes for me. It's like a magic trick that has been explained - it's not half as fun any more, is it. I like to maintain the illusion that my beloved characters are real, even though of course I don't really believe that. (Does that make any kind of sense at all outside my own brain?). For the same reason, I've never watched the unaired pilot more than once.

I wonder what the deleted scene is...

A pet hate of mine is companies that release DVD's and then re-release same DVD but with added extras.  Ladies and gentlemen

See I'm so annoyed I placed this in the wrong place.

Good news, there is also going to be a new standalone S3 boxset with the new extras.

That Sherlockology article Convict13 linked to seems to explain the situation --

The BBC Shop has the Series-3-with-all-the-video-goodies set for 14 pounds or 17.50 for Blu-Ray (roughly US $22-28), which is great for anyone in the UK, Europe, and select other countries.

However, they will not ship to the Americas.  Those of us who have the gall to live here are privileged to order the big Series 1-3 set (with some toys but without MHR) for a mere US $180.  :blowmytop:

Perhaps that will be rectified with time. And I think MHR is listed as being in the "big" set ... not that I would fork over the big bucks for it. Or for any of it, really. I'll just wait til some kind soul slips them into the internet tubes...........

Oh dear - maybe one of our British board members will offer to accept and re-send it? I'd be happy to as well, but since the BBC charges extra for shipping to Austria (my order of the blu-ray came to 27.59 eurobucks) I'm probably not the ideal layover.

eta: Thanks for the idea of re-gifting the original disc, btw, Arcadia! A friend of mine still hasn't returned my blu-ray of S3, and since his birthday is coming up in October, he shall henceforth consider them a gift ;) - that'll teach him to hog my stuff for half a year, besides :P.

The product description does not mention MHR, and Sherlockology explicitly says it's not included in the big honkin' American set.

I can understand the BBC favoring people who have paid their annual television fee, which I believe is by and large anyone who lives in the British Isles.  I could understand them imposing a (reasonable!) surcharge on shipments to other places.  But unless things have changed recently, they will ship to people in Europe and certain other places, where I don't believe they pay the fee either.

List price for the S1 and S2 DVDs is $35 + 30 = $65 (and you can get them on Amazon for $25 + 22.50 = $47.50).  They're charging $180 for the big set, so even going by list price (which nobody in their right mind would actually pay), they're charging $115 for S3 plus the new video features plus the collectibles.  The same thing minus the collectibles (and plus MHR) is offered in the UK for about $22.  So they're charging $93 (or more) for the collectibles?  I doubt it.

It's their show, of course, so they can obviously do whatever they like with it.  (I am restraining myself from offering suggestions.)  But if they don't offer the S3 special set at an equitable price over here pretty soon, lots of people are going to seek alternative sources -- meaning that the BBC can pretty much choose between getting a reasonable price for it, or getting nothing at all.

Apparently there is more than one deleted scene. Considering how many scenes I would have liked to have included in The Empty Hearse and, to some degree, in His Last Vow, I would be excited to find out.

I completely understand your aversion to having the episodes "spoilt" by the documentaries. On one hand, I feel the same way, but unfortunately I'm also drawn to the idea of having the producers and cast share their experiences with us. Problem is, the commentaries rarely give me the information I so desire anyway.

Many Happy Returns is worth the money on its' own. So brilliant!

Thanks to Martina and everyone else for the information!

Methinks maybe it's too soon to know fer shure? As you pointed out, it's kind of dopey for BBC to restrict what's sold in the US, I'm hoping it's just that no one's gotten the information straight yet. Although, after what Paramount did with "Into Darkness...." :(

That list of extras is for the special (British) S3 edition (the one that's selling for the equivalent of $20-something).

Regarding the (American) big honkin' $180 set, Sherlockology says:

... contains both Blu Ray and DVD, including all the above new bonus materials (excluding 'Many Happy Returns')....

Sorry!  :(

Well, to be completely fair, the American set does include DVDs and Blu-Rays.  So if anyone actually wants both formats and the toys, it might work out to something resembling a fair price.

But so far, no one seems to fit into that category.
