A National Public Radio article quotes Benedict Cumberbatch as saying that several Series 3 plot points may have come about due to his insistence on knowing Sherlock's backstory.  I'm too sleepy right now to pick out the best quote, but the whole article is interesting, so you might as well read it for yourself!

What are you talking about? What came out of the blue? Oh - has a certain British actor gone and gotten married? Well, congratulations to them, I guess.

 

Actually, my only reason for being more than marginally interested is that, based on their past casting decisions, it can only be a matter of time before the lady appears on Sherlock. I do hope she's a good actress! *Sigh*... and I do hope they manage to refrain from repeating the Mary thing, where real-life partner becomes series partner. Don't misunderstand me, I think Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington make a perfect TV couple in their respective roles (couldn't be better), but I still do not want Sherlock to get a proper girlfriend. Oh well, the universe is not a wish-granting factory.

 

(I'm horrible, aren't I. Two human beings enter into a committed relationship, and all I worry about is what that might do to my favorite television program. But hey, what goes on in Sherlock's life just has a lot more impact on mine than what goes on in the life of the person who plays him... I do wish them all the best, sincerely and honestly and from my heart. Welcome to the crowd of married people - we can always use more!)

In regards to the announcement it was apparently in  The Times of the forthcoming marriage of Benedict Cumberbatch to Sophie Hunter.

What a fantastic, old-school way to announce the engagement!  I must say, I'm incredibly pleased at this news, and I wish the future Mr. & Mrs. Cumberbatch all the happiness in the world.

Awwww, congrats to them!      I didn't really see this coming, but I couldn't have told you who he was dating so there's that too.  lol.    I'm glad to see he chose a nice middle-aged girl, though.

Seriously, it's nice to see a couple that obviously shares some common interests, but where both parties have their own careers and their own success in them.  It bodes well for their ability to keep their own identities and not let the ups and downs of fame pull them apart.

Yes, that seems likely. She's also an avant-garde theater director, so it's possible that she might direct an episode -- assuming that directing translates well from theater to television, which I kinda doubt.  Her acting experience does seem a more likely avenue into Sherlock.

Benedict Cumberbatch's former girlfriend Olivia Poulet played Eddie Van Coon's PA, Amanda, in "Blind Banker."  And Mark Gatiss's husband, Ian Hallard, played Moriarty's defense attorney in "Reichenbach."

As for other nepotism in the show, can we count one of the creators/producers casting himself as Mycroft?

Ah, what would we do without the Daily Mail to dish all the dirt? (Not that there is any on this pair yet, but it's fun to imagine the staff of the Mail getting to work this morning and being gobsmacked by the announcement.)

 

So, question on protocol/tradition (and I actually don't care at all what this particular couple chose to do, but it raised my curiosity):  The Mail seems to say that the groom's family took out the engagement announcement.  Is that British tradition?  I'm in the U.S., and my engagement announcement was very similar to this because I wanted everything to be as traditional and timeless as possible, but it was my parents (the bride's) who took out the announcement, and it appeared in my birth home town paper.  I was told at the time that this was the most traditional way, in the U.S. at least.

I believe it was customary for the family to place what was called a "ban" about an upcoming blissful event such as a wedding at least in England. I think it is done here in the states as well.
