Oh, Lordy -- now I'm gonna have to watch the stupid Oscars too?  :P

LOL   !  Fac fortia et patere, Carol ... which translates as "do brave deeds and endure", BTW.  Seems kind of appropriate given the circumstances.

And you're going to not see Leonardo DiCaprio win one.

Aye! Leonardo DiCaprio is actually a really good actor, he's deserved every Oscar he's ever won. Watch that " Django Unchained". You will hate him forever after that movie, he played his part so well. Wooooo! :metal:

Also it's a nice picture, but those glasses & the camera angle, ratio of forehead to chin is adding like 15 years to the man. The adoring crowd is awesome. Anyone notice the cover of the Entertainment magazine in one of the fans hands?, cool right? Where are the male fans? I guess they only pop up during Sherlock season.

I can't wait to see what he looks like 10-15 years from now.  He's going to be even more WOW.

Hmmm. I missed the deerstalkers. If Sherlock was somehow up for an Oscar I would watch, but to be honest I haven't really seen Benedict in anything else. Not into cartoons, Victorian or period pieces. Certainly not into fantasy, wizardry or action movies. I'm soooooooo boring. I like stories. Just good ole fashioned stories, maybe ones that seem like an autobiography. I also like documentaries, romantic comedies & classic movies. I like some Black/African American classics ( I really don't know what to call myself anymore), some are really horribly done, but they tend to be more sentimental.

And of course I just love detective stories.  B)

There is a male fan in that pic, actually. You can only see his left eye and part of his hat though.

Ha ha! :lol4:  :lol4:  :lol4:

Now I think I actually see a total of 3 men! good eye Bendy. There's a male of perhaps Pacific Island or Asian descent right next to him & the top of some poor guys head way in the back to the right.

The "official" term does seem to change about every ten years, doesn't it?  :D

How about you give "The Fifth Estate" a try? That film has been rather unfairly maligned, if you ask me. I liked it a lot! (And come on, I am in no way a patriotic person, but Daniel Brühl is one of the few international actors my country has produced whom I am in any way "proud of", so I'll take this chance to advertize him, too).

And I'm wondering if you might also like "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy". It's not exactly a detective story but it's spies, so kind of. Altho BC's part is rather small.

Oh, and "Hawking" -- it's basically a biography, and it's terrific. Uplifting, even. Not at all what I expected. You could also try "Van Gogh", which is a documentary, but in story form. It's not a slick movie-type production, but it's good.

Yes, we really liked Hawking too!  Other than The Last Enemy (which is also good, but as a miniseries, it's kinda long to suggest that someone "try"), that's all we've seen Cumberbatch in so far.  Well, except for Sherlock of course, and the recent Trek movie, and The Hobbit!

I'm hoping that Imitation Game is also really good.

oh that yumminess comment was abhorrent.  Cringing.  Like Magnussen licking Lady Smallwood's face.

The scene that came to my mind was the almost-kiss between Sherlock and Moriarty. Okay, granted, that scene was pretty funny (as opposed to that woman's comment!), but vile nonetheless!

Oh yes, the Moriarty near-kiss was vile too!

Hawking is excellent the acting by everyone is amazing, and the story is really interesting, but quite sad because of the subject matter.

I really enjoyed Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, but having watched it twice there are still bits I miss, Ben's part in the movie is quite small, but there is enough to enjoy, and that grey suit and blue tie - ah! I liked To the Ends of the Earth , but it is a mini-series,  The Last Enemy I liked as well, but not as much as TTEOTE.  I love Star Trek Into Darkness, he was so good in that, and it's a real fun action movie.  I've not seen The Fifth Estate, I have been meaning to see it.  As an Australian I can say the little that I have seen of Ben his accent it quite believable.

Amazon had a sale and last week I bought The Last Enemy and Parade's End for an incredibly low price ... and because I pre-ordered series 7 of Lewis along with it, I got free shipping !!  Life is good !  ;)   Haven't had a chance to watch either of the DVDs  yet, but I have seen Tinker, Tailor and Star Trek Into Darkness, so my Cumberbatch education is already growing ... almost by leaps and bounds. :D

I was really impressed with Benedict in The Fifth Estate - not just with him, though, but I really liked the film. It had involving character portrayals, and a very interesting story. One of my favorite BC films. To The Ends of the Earth is great, love it. I also thoroughly enjoy Amazing Grace, especially the portrayal of the friendship between BC's character and William Wilberforce, the main character. Parade's End is also wonderful.

What else?.. Oh, yes, Benedict was great in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, but I honestly couldn't get a firm grasp on the political game, which is the foundation for the story. It's still worth watching, being an interesting and convincing look into a bit of history, as well as for BC's character, which I think is the most relatable character in the film.

Benedict's performances in Atonement, War Horse, Star Trek Into Darkness, and 12 Years a Slave are really good. Won't mention The Hobbit :-) How can I judge that performance? Uh... His voice was great. It always is. Then there's a low-budget film, Third Star, which is very moving and sad.

I've also seen him in Whistleblower, in which he delivers an amazing American accent! That man has more than one talent. Now, I haven't been to Australia, but I've watched Australian shows, and I've been to New Zealand, and I think BC did really well with the Australian accent in The Fifth Estate.

Next on my list of BC stuff I want to watch is Hawking and The Last Enemy. And The Imitation Game, when it's released in theaters - which, unfortunately, is not until February here in Denmark. Anything else I'm missing?

Oh yes, third star! I loved that. It's my kind of sad... (And it has J.J. Feild in it - another bonus. I am quite attracted to that man. Wish he'd get a guest role on Sherlock some day.)

... see what I mean? I really would not mind seeing these two actors together in one film again, maybe in a less sad context:

You do realize that it wasn't just Cumberbatch's voice there?  He also did the motion-capture performance (at least for Smaug, and I believe for the Necromancer as well), which you can see some of in the "Hobbit" thread, starting here.

Alex and I have ordered [beware of SPOILERS at these links] Third Star and Stuart: A Life Backwards from Amazon UK -- last I checked, they were not available in the US, so once more hurray for region-free DVD players!

Well, be warned about Third Star. I think it's a wonderful film, and not depressing at all, it's very positive in its own way, but the ending is not what is conventionally called a happy one (although I love it!), and the story is about something inherently sad.

Have you by any chance read "The Fault in Our Stars"? I'd put that in the same category of sad. My kind of sad. But I know it's not for everyone, and so: Be Warned!

:P Yes, I do.

And it didn't improve his voice, though it did make it a whole lot more scary... seeing as Cumberbatch's voice isn't scary.

Oh yeah, "Stuart A Life Backward", you might like that too, Jess! Based on a true story, as I recall, about an author (BC) and a homeless man (Tom Hardy). They're both terrific.

I think you said you didn't care for period pieces or sci fi, which is why I didn't mention some of the others, but those listed above are all good, if you want to branch out. Whether it's luck or smarts, I don't think BC's ever been in anything truly bad. Nothing embarrassing, at any rate, like slasher flicks or mindless sex "comedies".

I've been putting off watching Third Star until I have a big enough block of time to see it w/o interruption. Also I keep hearing how sad it is, and I have to be in the right frame of mind to watch sad things.

Next on my list of BC stuff I want to watch is Hawking and The Last Enemy...... Anything else I'm missing?

I haven't seen anyone mention "Starter for Ten", again BC has a smallish role but he's hysterical (I really, REALLY want to see him in more comedic roles!!!) and it's a pretty sweet coming of age movie. And another one, which I haven't seen yet so I can't recommend it, is "Creation." No idea what it's like, but it's got Paul Bettany, which is enough reason for me to give it a try even without BC's presence!

Here's BC's filmography page from IMDb ... MOST of those, except for the more recent big budget films, can be found online if you hunt and peck enough. (I'd post a link but they keep moving, because, y'know, it's not exactly -- ahem -- legal....) I think the only one I haven't been able to track down is "Four Lions". Most of the list constitutes pretty small roles, but he was cute as a bug in his twenties, just look at Bendydoodle's avatar! (Which is from the Fortysomething era.) He has a pretty big role in the Miss Marple episode; and guess who else is in it? Russell Tovey, aka Henry Knight in HoB.

And don't miss The Turning Point. A film of the two-man play. I found it helpful to watch the "making of" documentary first, as it provides background to the story, which I wasn't familiar with.

Thanks! Yes, I've already read that Wikipedia page, so I know a number of details, including the ending.

If you like not-conventionally-happy endings, you might try Martin Freeman's movie, The Good Night. I just adore that ending!
