I think "bans" have something to do with church, don't they ?  I'm not very well versed in these matters.  I was engaged once and that was enough for me !  Congratulations to the happy couple !  Lovely news and what little information I've seen about the bride-to-be seems to indicate a smart and accomplished lady.  I hope they're very happy .  :D

Does the groom's family traditionally publish the ban?

:D I know, right? Literally the first thing I thought when I saw the picture someone posted of her here was "oh, look, she could play Violet! Can't be too hard for the make-up department to add the freckles..."

(For those among you who are not familiar with the old Doyle stories: Miss Hunter is the client in the story "The Copper Beaches". She is quite a cool and courageous lady. Holmes shows a very little interest in her, which abruptly ends, however, once the case is solved and there is no intriguing puzzle connected with her any more. She ends up getting a good job somewhere, and that is the last the reader knows of her.)

Wouldn't it be brilliant if she were to play Miss Hunter? That'd be such a geeky thing to do. I know that if I was the director, I would not be able to let this chance pass by, even if it was merely for my own sake. After all, there's nothing better (and sadder) than sitting in front of your own work and chuckling about jokes only you find incredibly funny. Cumberbatch read all the short stories and books, right? I bet that's an insider joke between the two of them.

Re. the wedding banns....The banns are a declaration of the intention to marry and are published - and read aloud by the vicar during Sunday morning worship, for three consecutive weeks - in the parish churches of the bride and groom. Traditionally, the wedding would take

Thank you Slithytove for the explanation. I haven't heard of that taking place here in the US. However, it is possible that it used to happen and could probably still happen in some more traditional denominations.

I guess I must not be a fan, since I am not broken-hearted but delighted!

Wait, you've lost me. Why should we be broken-hearted? Has Mr C. announced that after his marriage, he will give up acting and disappear for ever after or what? Or am I missing some other bit of tragic news?

Posted

We are supposed to be broken-hearted because he's now "off the market", as one of those articles so delicately put it. Because all fans are marriage-crazy girls who thought they were going to be "the one" for Mr. C. Because girls are too silly to know better or think about anything else. Gahhhhhh......

Sorry, my previous post only went through in part.  What I was trying to say was that traditionally the wedding would take place in one of these churches, usually the bride's (because her family foot the bill.)  Publishing the banns gives people a chance to say if the marriage should not go ahead, instead of having to jump up and object during the actual wedding.

I definitely haven't seen this coming, but that's because I have no idea about Mr Cumberbatch's love life or dating history. For some reason, I've never had an interest in such information concerning actors I like. But now that I know he's going to be married, I wish him all the luck in the world. May this wedding last and be a happy one!

It's hard to not be happy when someone who has made absolutely no bones about wanting to marry finds the right person and gets to move along with his life.

Is it just me, or does Ms. Hunter actually resemble Mr. Cumberbatch is a small way ?  And ... she also looks really familiar !  Hmmm.

Here in Maine they post the pictures of Engaged couples along with a blurp about the upcoming wedding in the daily news paper.

Announcing forthcoming marriages in the local newspaper isn't as popular here as it used to be, though some still do it.  Of course, if you are posh like Benedict's family, the proper way to do it is in The Times.

I think for the sake of our favorite show, this is very good news because I think being settled in married life in London means that Benedict will continue to play Sherlock for a very long time, with Martin Freeman's Watson at his side! :D:sherlock:

Does anybody seriously think about celebrities that way? As real potential partners? I mean, statistically, you're probably not less likely to meet and / or fall in love with someone famous as any other person on the planet, but still...

Nah. I'll save being broken-hearted for when they kill Sherlock for real. That would be the way to go if anybody wanted to see me cry.
