The scarf, you mean? One of my students was wearing one that way last week, and I didn't even do a doubletake.

I'll admit, I bought a dark blue scarf... Might even go after a cosplay coat...

If I'm not too late to comment on the scarf -- apparently that's a fairly common way of wearing one nowadays, especially in Europe and the UK.  So we should not automatically assume that someone using a "European knot" (as it is known) was influenced by Sherlock -- though of course they may have been.  (I had personally never noticed anyone else wearing their scarf that way -- but that just goes to show how much I get around!)

Here's an American video showing how to "tie" the knot -- posted on YouTube in August 2010, a couple of months before Sherlock had even aired here -- and a similar video from Europe posted in April of that year, well before the show had aired anywhere (note that even in what I take to be a Scandinavian language, the knot is called by the English name "European knot").

I am gobsmacked. Instructions? For the European knot? :lol5:

A college classmate of mine wore a scarf with that type of knot approximately 15 years ago while we were on a 2 month internship (not sure if she had been to Europe before but we had spent 10 days there at the beginning of that trip).  Benedict was at LAMDA at that point working on a masters so obviously no Sherlock as an influence yet.

I finally ordered Sherlock Cluedo from Amazon. I should be getting it in about 4 weeks or so  :) (just a tad bit excited)

Little bit like rules in a knife fight, huh?  ;)  Let me hasten to point out that I posted those links merely to establish that the knot predates Sherlock.

If you haven't bought the book, SHERLOCK THE CASEBOOK, it is really a hoot.  Put out by BBC, it covers the first 2 series.  Lots of John's blogs, information on the cases, and snarky bantering between Sherlock and John via post-it notes.  Sometimes Sherlock interjects a post-it on part of John's blog.  It's funny as all get out just for the post-it notes alone.  I ordered it through Amazon.com out of the U.K. and it took about 3 weeks to arrive.  Good for my collection.  Will need to get Cluedo, I suppose!  Will this Sherlock obsession ever end???? GAH!

That 'European knot' has been a very normal way to wear your scarf on mainland Europe (well, here in the Netherlands) for at least the past 10 years. Definitely not a Sherlock exclusive!

Yes, aren't the post-it notes in it just amazingly funny? The whole thing, though, was reworked to form The Sherlock Chronicles, with many things said by the creators, the scriptwriters and the actors being the same! However, the whole part about the Adventure of the cheap flat is unique to it, and the post-it note from Dr. Watson about Sherlock keeping a spider as a bookmark makes it a real prize worth having.

if you don't have a copy of BC's "The Whistleblower," here's a chance to get one for $5.46 off of eBay - and that includes shipping.  There are 4 available at that price.  There were five, but my collection did not have this one...

On this thread, you can read how forum members reacted to this book when it was first released.  Among the other bits of news in that thread is the fact that the book is also available as a paperback from Amazon in the US -- but under a different title, The Sherlock Files.  (The original British edition is a hardback.)

I wanted the hardback edition.  Is my obsession bad enough that I should get the paperback one too with the different title?  Time will tell.

I agree, the hardback edition is very nicely constructed.  I haven't seen the paperback, but while I expect it's also good quality with exactly the same content, it's still a paperback.  Hopefully it works out a bit cheaper, though, for those Americans who don't care to pay for a hardback PLUS trans-Atlantic shipping.

You know your Sherlock obsession is bad when you spent the better part of your evening reading Amanda Abbington's twitter history. In all fairness, I only started reading it to see if she had any updates on Sherlock but I ended up staying because she is wickedly funny (her account of assembling a barbie house made me laugh out loud), deliciously foul mouthed, and because she regularly posts pics of her Dachshunds - Dachshunds are always good.

I really hope they'll keep Mary for at least another full season. I really like Mary, and think her story line could use some more developing, but mostly I now love Amanda Abbington.

Oh the Barbie doll house posting was indeed hilarious.  Did you see how enormous that thing was, though!  Good grief!  She never did say if she got the elevator part working.  But her older posts with Simon Pegg were really a scream.

Well I used to watch an episode a night,.

Then i cut it down to just one a day when i was on school hols(I work in school!)

Now, it's just when hubby's away on business trips!

You know the obsession is bad when you start collecting tobacco pipes used by different Sherlock Holmes' and you don't even smoke. Maybe when I hit 75 I'll start.

And since I now have my pocket watch I want to have vests made that have watch pockets.

... when your boss says "don't we all want to be Sherlock Holmes?", and all of a sudden, you want to hug her.

When you know that after counting down the days until you receive the new CD from your favorite artist is done, you will be switching back to counting down the days to when your copy of Sherlock Cluedo arrives. And then counting down the days to the next episode of Sherlock even if the air date isn't set in stone yet.
