Mary

Her self-confidence (I am the best thing that could have happened to you)/her decidedly off-putting past (wet jobs for the CIA, indeed!)

Interesting how different people see this scene differently:

JOHN: Yeah, meeting you has been the best thing that could have possibly happened.

MARY: I agree.

JOHN: What?

MARY: I agree I’m the best thing that could have happened to you.

[pause]

MARY: Sorry.

It looks to me like Mary is both a little nervous about what John is obviously leading up to and somewhat amused by his nervousness -- so she's teasing him gently. Not saying that she disagrees with him, just that she's mainly trying to lighten the moment, but seems to make it just a bit more awkward instead.

Or it's both at once: she's teasing him, but she also believes it. I wonder if John still does?

Another person who loves Mycroft!!! Welcome!

Haha! Thanks! I could have listed more things I love about Mycroft, but sometimes I try to seem like a normal person.

I hope it's alright that i resurrect older thread.

I have luxury of time today, and i want to do something meaningful: talking about BBC Sherlock.

1. Sherlock,

Like his impulse, his brilliance, his ability to kick people ass, his violin, his precious word (when he promises, it's god damn real), his insensitiveness and honesty (i wish i can do that but still being likeable like him), his talents, his non-whinner attitude (i would say something if i'm nearly choked to death or have morning fight with a swordman!), his body language, his craziness, his hidden delicate feeling, his voice..

2. John

His ability to put up with Holmes brothers, that he can always be relied on, great sense of humour and undying admiration of Sherlock.

3. Mrs. Hudson

Taking care of Sherlock and putting up with him. Like her adventurous and quirkiness, and she is a bad ass!

4. Molly

Loving Sherlock unconditionally, including slapping him when she must, very tough in her own way and not a drama queen. She is certainly a type of person i would want to have as a friend. Love how homely she looks.

5. Mary

She is funny and easy going

6. Lestrade

His accent and his sincerity. Instead of being jealous and mean to Sherlock (hate you Donovan) he appreciates and understands him (give him 5 minutes to your crime scene and try not to punch him). His "you bastard" and bear hug sums him up very well.

7. Mycroft

He being frustated with Sherlock is adorable. Love his variety of ways of contacting John and the way he hates people is so fascinating, love it. (I forget the exact word, something along the line of his expression of people like he is talking about verminin TEH)

Oh, all likes no dislikes?? Yes!!! What is there not to like? They are all fascinating people!

Sorry to rain on your parade, van Buren supernova, that was a very thorough explanation, but could you remember that the personal pronoun 'I' is always capitalised? That is why Sir Humphrey calls it 'the perpendicular pronoun' , it makes your post look funny!

Thanks for pointing that out. Didn't realise I made that many. I'm typing in a very small window on my tablet and I barely able to scroll the post around to check for typos n all.

Love your insight Van Buren Supernova. I agree on your takes of each character mentioned. I like many if those same things.

Also feel free to resurrect any thread you feel like. Sometimes we need to dust off the old ones.

Yes, please, resurrect anything you like (as long as you don't resurrect CAM! )

You mentioned Mycroft and his "frustration" :) ... I think that's become one of my favorite things about the show, the battle of wits between Mycroft and Sherlock. So clever and funny, I'd enjoy seeing more of it. I do wish Mycroft didn't interfere so much, though. I'm more interested in Sherlock saving himself than in big brother rescuing him.

So much this.  Their "banter," not that you can really call it that, is one of the highlights of the show for me.  I find their relationship endlessly entertaining and intriguing.  I know I'll be disappointed that in the books Mycroft plays a much lesser role (or at least that's what I've understood from stuff I've read online).

Mycroft appears in exactly three stories, The Greek Interpreter, The Final Problem ( as a silent cabdriver) and in The Bruce-Partington Plans, and verbal sparring aside, if it is a Sherlock series, Mycroft should have a much smaller, not a larger influence on what is going on. Mr Gatiss showed us how this can be achieved in The Hounds of Baskerville, but then we all know he is the bigger ACD admirer of the creative pair! More power to him, if he can make Mycroft even more low-key and unobtrusive!

Thank you! Cheers to that.

Good to hear it's okay.

Otherwise I felt very much like a jumpy old kid digging old (but great stuff) while others might think,"again????"

No, no, not CAM. In my limited mind palace I always want to scrub that pissy smelling fire place and I am still angry that I was not there smacking his head off when he harassed Sherlock in hospital while he was helpless and injured (HLV deleted scene)

Amen to all wishes of more Mycroft. Tbh, I don't mind so much of him interfering as long as I get Holmes brother interaction.

Having said that, the scene where Sherlock 'almost break him in two' is also one of my favorite., although can't help feeling bad for him.

I read somewhere that Mycroft is supposed to be overweight in the book. But can Benedict's Sherlock actually able to break Gatiss's Mycroft in two? It's cute that John believe so, I also believe so but mostly because Sherlock is superhuman in my eyes, blurred with blind admiration.

I thought that that scene where Sherlock nearly breaks Mycroft in two was strange and a bit unwarranted even. Later I heard that that scene was actually altered to cut out the fact that Sherlock was attacking him in response to Mycroft threat toward Anderson and co.

Anywayy

1. Sherlock

relatably "sociopathic" (he tries, anyway), logical and purely rational, not obsessed with or even interested in interpersonal bedroom activities (that's new! or old rather, Victorian element) / sentimental in S3

2. John

basically everything people said they disliked, he gives me feelings, everything ISFJ, temper, all jumpers + casual wear that someone said makes him look like your grampa and I kinda agree, he makes no sense to me / um……………. I’ll have to get back to u on that. Difficult. His imperfections make him perfect

3. Mary

She shot Sherlock / She presence confuses me about John and Sherlock and means John doesn’t live at 221B

4. Molly

Comic relief? she gives you coffee? / doormat (lou is awesome tho)

5. Lestrade

Uh... / hm…

6. Mycroft

Everything, the way he smothers and emotionally vexes his baby brother / his smoothness and civility can be annoying

7. Moriarty

Love how playful he is in the game, Tim and sexiness, his lines, he makes so much sense and is crazy / killing himself, fool

Ahh, the joys of joining a forum very, very late and having the "old" threads be brand new!

1. Sherlock

Like: His keen way of seeing through all the clutter and cutting right to the heart of the matter.

Dislike: He let John grieve for two years. He deserves a spanking.

2. John

Like: He calls it like he sees it and is daunted by very, very little. You can see the doctor who went to war.

Dislike: The mustache.

3. Mrs. Hudson

Like: Wonderfully dotty.

Dislike: Sadly, she doesn't have enough depth (yet) for me to have any dislikes. She's icing on the cake.

4. Molly

Like: She overcame her meekness and hero worship and learned to stand up for herself when Sherlock got too snarky. For severely shy people, that is hard to do and takes a lot of inner strength. It's made her more interesting.

Dislike: Her accent (I don't know why, but the way she speaks is still to wispy for my taste).

5. Lestrade

Like: His gruffness. Best reaction to Sherlock's return -- a huge hug and "You bastard!"

Dislike: The tiresome running joke about his wife. For Pete's sake, Rupert Graves is still as hot as ever, and we're supposed to believe that with a husband who looked like that, she'd rather run off and shag a series of other people?

6. Mary

Like: The fact that she's complex enough to be paired with the Sherlock and John of the 21st century. The original Mary Morstan was such a damsel in distress.

Dislike: She nevertheless feels like a third wheel.

Why isnt Moriarty on this wonderful list? Because there's nothing to dislike about him? Evil has never been more perfect

Posted

Good question, let's add him!

Moriarty

Like: His playfulness

Dislike: He tried to hurt my Sherlock

While we're at it:

Jeff the Cabbie

Like: Loves his kids

Dislike: He tried to hurt my Sherlock

Magnussen

Like: Impossible!!!!! There is nothing to like about this odious toad! I can't even stand his voice!

Dislike: Everything, everything! Ugh!

Henry Knight

Like: His weirdness

Dislike: the way his pockets stick out from his trousers

Sally Donovan:

Like: She stands up for herself and her boss

Dislike: She tried to hurt my Sherlock

Phillip Anderson

Like: His expression when he said "Didn't you find it a little bit intriguing?"

Dislike: "Now Sherlock, it's for your own good." (Strangle....!)

Sebastion Wilkes

Like: He respected Sherlock well enough to call him in on the case (I imagine he'd only settle for the best)

Dislike: He's a pompous, overpaid, self-satisfied frat boy.

Soo-lin Yao

Like: She's pretty.

Dislike: She's a cliche.

General Shan:

Like: Her Yoko Ono sunglasses.

Dislike: She's a cliche.

Anyone I've missed?

Oh yes!

Gollum: useful to hang Christmas decoration

Irene Adler: she is rather good

Angelo: he does miscellaneous delivery

Billy Wiggin: he definitely can further deduce

Billy the skull: handy to store cigarette

Helen Louise: she is pretty quiet

Again, nothing to dislike! :)

You meant Golem, didn't you? He would be also handy for painting walls and ceilings and installing ceiling lamps.

Is Billy the Scull canon?

Posted

OMG, how could I forget Irene! :picard:

Irene Adler
Like: her confidence
Dislike: her innate cruelty

The Golem
Seriously?

Angelo
Like: He loves Sherlock
Dislike: He's not the brightest bulb in the box.

Billy Wiggins
Like: His obtuseness
Dislike: His obtuseness

Billy the Skull
Like: He's a loyal friend to Sherlock
Dislike: He allows Mrs. Hudson to steal him.

Helen Louise
 :/  This is a SERIOUS forum, folks!! :wtf:

Yes I meant Golem.. got it wrong every single time..

:axe: !!!!

That is for J.P right? You already axed me in another thread! XD

Moriaty: he is funny and has dedication to what he is doing, weaving elaborate long term plan and willing to die for what he work for :)

Jeff the Cabbie: he doesn't like pink suitcase, because neither do I

Dislike: he is lousy cab driver, you should see the route he took to bring Sherlock to their confontration place.

Magnussen: he is tall and smart

Dislike: I f*coughing hate blackmailers

Henry Knight: like his expressions and he is a humble nice guy

Donovan: she seems smart

Dislike: freak comment, she reminds me of jealous bully people who treat someone badly just because they are different

Anderson: he is not afraid to admit he is wrong, which say a lot bcs not many people can do that

Sebastian: he is quite nice to John

Dislike: frat boy, ugh

Soo Lin: she is smart

Dislike: she takes too long to make tea XD

How could we forget Irene?

Like the most: Her daring, and the way she revels in it. She is the exact opposite of me in every way, but in this especially.

Dislike: Can't say, really. She doesn't seem to be very good at making herself happy. Like Sherlock, it seems to be more about The Game for her than anything else, including her wellbeing or contentment. She's terribly fragile somehow, but she won't ever let anyone truly help or protect her, she thinks people must be bought or coerced to help. That's rather sad. But I don't exactly dislike her for it, I just feel sorry for her.

Hmmm... Anderson? I kind of liked him better when he was Sherlock's antagonist. He was funnier back then... Now I just find him cringeworthy.

Donovan: Well, she's pretty cool actually, and I like her loyalty towards Lestrade. Of course I don't like her meanness.

Did we do Janine, by the way?

Like the most: How funny she is

Dislike: Her vulgarity. Frankly, I find her annoying and not even near good enough for Sherlock.

Bill Wiggins: Like nothing. I find him annoying too, and superfluous. I don't need anybody making deductions but Sherlock. Okay, okay, I like the way he talks.

Gee, I seem to be very negative tonight! Must be post-travel nerves... Actually I like pretty much every character on the show save Magnussen. Dislikes are relative. (I could really do without Wiggins, though, and Mycroft I sort of love to hate).

That is an interesting take about Irene, and I think it makes a lot of sense. Maybe she used to only get her ways by manipulation therefore she doesn't really know or believe in other ways. Indeed, that is kind of sad.
