Lordy, I'd hope so!  If they can't ship it over to the next island, there's no hope at all for those of us on the other side of the entire Atlantic.

I wonder if they approached the filmmaking any differently knowing it would be on the big screen... that would be a question to ask at a panel.

They've been doing the regular episodes in hi-def for the Blu-rays, but they might like even higher resolution for a theater screen.  Anybody know how that compares?

Frames tend to be a bit simpler for television, but big-screen tvs are presumably decreasing the distinction, and Sherlock has always been very "cinematic," so that may or may not not be an issue.

As you say, that's a good question for a Q&A -- assuming that they had this eventuality in mind before they started filming,

Yay! It's great to have a date, finally and some new images. Does this mean the cinema screening will be on January 1st also?

Hmmm.... this will be interesting.  How to see it in cinemas AND see it on the telly on the same day.... well, I will have a DVR, so I will just record it anyhow so that I can rewatch to my heart's content until I own the DVD.

It's become a tradition to start the New Year, of whatever vintage, with the new Sherlock! It answers sitty's most urgent query, but not the direction or likely content. Now, to find a cinema in the vicinity! The new trailer is on YouTube, cannot make heads or tails of it! And no Mycroft listed in the cast at IMDb!

Am I the only one that keeps reading: Abdominable Bride? :wtf:

To our canon experts: any clues which story it's related to?

Dear J.P., for the love of whatever you hold dear, pictures 2 & 3 are rip offs of the Granada series, so much so that I would like to shake the cunning, wily, artful Mr Moffat until his back teeth rattled for doing it: both TO Sherlock Holmes and TO the fans of said series! It's what would be called a mind**** in tumblr!:axe:

There are very few ACD stories where the lady is a cause of mischief, beginning with Scandal, (done that), The Eligible Bachelor is the other way round, The Cardboard Box and The Veiled Lodger are possibilities, Thor Bridge is definitely in the running, as is Wisteria Lodge (for another reason), The Retired Colourman, The Abbey Grange, The Crooked Man and The Three Gables are still in the running, although The Valley of Fear seems not to have any relevance any more!

About the only thing Sherlockians can be thankful for, is that in the Victorian part of the Special no curls need apply (Sussex Vampire insider pun, sorry!)

I'm not a canon expert, but...

“They are not all successes, Watson,” said he. “But there are some pretty little problems among them. Here’s the record of the Tarleton murders, and the case of Vamberry, the wine merchant, and the adventure of the old Russian woman, and the singular affair of the aluminum crutch, as well as a full account of Ricoletti of the club-foot, and his abominable wife. And here–ah, now, this really is something a little recherché.”

Here's the announcement from Sherlockology:

It’s been longed for, and finally it’s going to happen. Outside of premiere screenings at the British Film Institute and BAFTA, Sherlock has never been seen on cinema screens before TV broadcast, but with the arrival of the forthcoming special episode "Sherlock: The Abominable Bride" this is all going to change.

Cinemas worldwide will be screening the brand new episode, and in partnership with BBC Worldwide we’re delighted to bring you the list of over 100 cinemas in the UK and Ireland that will be showing the eagerly awaited Victorian Special on January 1 2016.

While the episode may be airing on BBC One and PBS on the same day, cinema goers will able to view exclusive bonus material with the screening, including a guided tour of the ‘new’ 221B Baker Street from Steven Moffat and a look behind the scenes at how the special episode was made featuring all the lead cast and crew. In addition, the cinema release of "The Abominable Bride" has been mixed in the incredibly enveloping audio of Dolby Atmos, sporting a maximum of 64 unique speaker feeds in a cinema capable of outputting the audio format.

Tickets will go on sale on November 2 2015.

Click here for the aforementioned list of theaters in the UK and Ireland.

Thanks Carol! I hope they go on sale at midnight, more chance of me being awake than if it's 7am or something.

Houston, we have a DATE :bouncy:

BBC One @BBCOne 7m7 minutes ago

We’re thrilled to confirm that the #Sherlock special will air on @BBCOne on New Year’s Day!

... and on the same day in the USA.

It was just announced at the ComiCon during the Sherlock panel.

The title: The Abominable Bride

I just got home, and haven't had a chance to watch the videos yet.  Do they explicitly state that PBS will air "Bride" on New Year's Day?  Or is that a hope / assumption?  All I've seen so far is in that Sherlockology quote, "While the episode may be airing on BBC One and PBS on the same day...." -- and I don't know which kind of "may" that is.  Do they mean "could be" or "even though they are"?  I'm all ears for other sources!

Sue said same day.  PBS has tweeted that is indeed the case.

We've already had a Ricoletti reference in "Reichenbach" (Peter Ricoletti, the infamous criminal that Sherlock helped Scotland Yard apprehend, prompting them to award him the deerstalker), but sure, why not borrow the rest of the phrase this time?

Yay! Now what about the theatrical showing?
