Hey, have we hijacked yet another thread? Shouldn't all this go to the Subtext thread?

Anyway, I have actually subscribed to Rebecca's TJLC YouTube (yep, kind of joining the dark side!) but she had valid points taken from actual screenshots. And she herself said that Messrs Moffat and Gatiss have helped her make 32, ( gasp!) videos on the subject, through their visuals. The whole thing should make ma petite Amelie real proud!

Yes. It started as a small lump in my throat and spread to my brain. You have noticed I'm a zombie, right?

My thoughts on Sholto/Watson command. I wonder if Sholto had a medic within his combat unit similar to how many schools have a nurse without having a full medical team. Thus Sholto becomes John's commanding officer.

That might make sense if John wasn't a surgeon. Has it ever actually said he was a surgeon in the show? Can't remember.

Ah, that could make sense. Dunno if the British army actually works that way, but yes, that fits very well with what we see, and is also consistent with what I recall from Conan Doyle.

Terminology quibble: John would have been an embedded doctor, not a medic. At least in American military parlance, a medic is basically an Emergency Medical Technician. My nephew-in-law was one of those, and is now a firefighter/EMT.

From what we've seen so far, he's a general practitioner, though I believe the CV shown in TBB reveals an intent to become a surgeon (which may be a nod to general practice having included a bit of general surgery back in Conan Doyle's day).

I was under the impression he was a trauma surgeon but couldn't do it now due to his tremor so went for a GP job instead. Don't know how that works, because people usually train specifically to be a GP if that's what they decide to go into.

Have no idea about how it works with docs in the army, I had a look at the army recruitment site for doctors before and they don't seem to be on the front line. I think medics are on the front line and it's their responsibility to try to stabilise the patient enough to get them back to the docs on base, like you said about EMTs/paramedics and hospital docs. But clearly John must have been out and about to get wounded, perhaps he was helping locals medically and there was an ambush?

For some reason, I think I've imported the Doc Martin back story into John's background, and that lets me believe that he was a surgeon going into the war but his injury prevented him from performing surgery after the war, so he became a GP.  In any event, I sort of think there was some nebulous event where John decided to accompany a unit to the front when perhaps, as a surgeon, he could have stayed further behind lines, and then he was wounded in the process of helping someone.

So there you go.  I apparently think John Watson is a combination of Doc Martin and Ernest Hemingway (complete with an anger problem and a potential drinking problem).

More attractive than Doc Martin though thank God.

True.  Although, you know, I always found Doc Martin, if not attractive, at least endearing in an odd sort of way.  Then again, it's the whole "tortured genius" thing.
