I think a movie should stand on its own, in the sense that you don't need any specialized knowledge in order to follow it in a general sort of way.

However, I agree that watching (for example) some DVD extras can add a lot.

For example, we had not seen Hitchhiker's Guide in the theater. We were familiar with the book and the tv show, and assumed the movie was just a remake. After watching Sherlock, though, we decided to give it a try due to Martin Freeman being in it.

On first viewing, I loathed it! I knew Douglas Adams had passed on, and assumed that the differences were due to somebody messing with his work. But then we watched the extras and learned that many of the changes had actually been Adams' idea. So now I'm willing to judge the movie on its own merits. (I find it better than the tv show in some ways and worse in others.)

Mad Max: Fury Road - 4/10

Well, what should I say..too much action, boring and shallow characters, bad plot..I didn't like this movie at all. My boyfriend is a fan of the original ones but disliked this new version.

It seemed like the stuntmen were responsible of the screenwriting, because there was so many unnecessary stunts and other action. :P

Interesting! You know, I really liked Fury Road and it's not my type of movie in general at all. But then, it had Charlize Theron in it... What shall I say. I love her work, not matter how wacky the franchise. I even saw both Huntsman films because of her and I thought they were much, much worse than Fury Road. For me, Fury Road had a strange, barbaric beauty to it.

Interesting. :D Hopefully you didn't get offended of my opinion. But I have to admit that the clothing and setting. Quite barbaric as you said.

Offended? Why? Why should I be offended that you like different things than I do? Wouldn't make much sense... But thanks for asking. :hugz:

Doctor Strange - Without giving any spoilers it's the newest instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and honestly I was incredibly surprised at how good it was. From what I've noticed it wasn't highly advertised, I only saw one teaser trailer a long time ago on Facebook, I never really saw any big billboards or trailers on TV like you do with some of the other Marvel films so I think they probably took it as a gamble which paid off enough for a continuation. The acting is brilliant (what else can you expect when the main character is played by Cumberbatch) and it was the typical witty humour Marvel is becoming known for, which I love. Well worth watching if you haven't seen it already or have been on the fence about it.

However in just a couple of days I will be going to watch Fantastic Beasts on it's release date with one of my closest friends and I'm absolutely stoked for it!

The Truman Show - 10/10

"Have you ever questioned the nature of your reality?" (Well this quote is actually from Westworld but would also fit here).

Anyway this is a movie one should watch. It's brilliant.

The Truman Show - 10/10

[....] It's brilliant.

I thought it was interesting -- but what I really wanted to know was, what happens *next*?

Posted

I haven't seen the Truman Show for years but I thought it was brilliant. I think after he gets out he tries to live a normal life, but the fame and the attention is too much so he ends up living in the middle of nowhere miles away from anybody. It's a pessimistic view I know (always looking on the bright side), but it's what I would do... but then he's a lot more sociable than I am so who knows.

Ex Machina. I'm very torn on how to rate this, when I first saw it in the cinema I thought it was good but it's one of those that really sticks with you, I still think about it now! Effects are amazing, story is brilliant, but it's oh so disturbing. And the ending (for Caleb) makes me sad. 8 or 9 out of 10 maybe.

Really liked Ex Machina. I gave it a 9/10.

Unless you have an extended edition (is there one?), It ends just as he walks out into the larger world -- which left me wanting to see what happens next, how he adapts.

Don't think there is one, that's just how I imagine it. I think the way it ends is the best because like you said it leaves you wanting more and thinking about it.

*Sigh*... I want to, even though I am not a Harry Potter fan, and I had plans for going to the movies next week because I was supposed to have some time off. But time off got canceled because a co-worker is sick and I nave to fill in for him. So I am afraid I will have to wait for the DVD. :(

Requiem for a dream - 10/10

Ou my.. What an intense movie.

Probably one of the most intense dramas and the best anti drugs movie ever.

The editing, cinematography and performances are all top notch and the atmosphere.. gotta see it yourself.

What an experience. But I warn you, it's not like "O wow what an uplifting experience" it's more like "This is depressing as **** but it's one of the greatest movies at the same time".

It's a popular film so I imagine it'll be in the cinema for a while, can't you just go at a later date?

It sucks that your time off was cancelled though, are they allowed to do that when you've already booked it off and it's been agreed on?

I felt the same way about the 2nd Mad Max movie (what we called The Road Warrior). Normally I wouldn't go within 20 miles of a movie like that, but it was getting such rave reviews that I took a chance ... and thought it was amazing. Brutal, but on the side of the angels, if you see what I mean. I should probably give Fury Road a try. Although, does a movie like that translate well to the small screen? The Road Warrior doesn't, not really. You need the bombast of a big theater to really appreciate that one, methinks.

Dr. Strange: alas, I can only give it a 7/10, maybe an 8. Maybe I wanted to love it too much, I don't know. It's perfectly enjoyable but for me it lacks that certain spark that sets a movie apart. I finally decided to spring for the IMAX 3D version, and it was totally worth the money as far as the sheer visual spectacle goes. But it never engaged me on a deep emotional level; it was just fun. That's okay.

The Truman Show ... I remember thinking it was brilliantly done, but ... I'm one of those people who just doesn't "get" Jim Carrey. They could have cast almost anyone else in that role and I think I would have loved the movie. But something about him ... urk. Not fair, but I can't help myself, he makes me feel like I've been force fed a jar of mayonnaise.

Fantastic Beasts ... I've seen the TV trailers and it looks like something I'd enjoy, but .... am I the only one who can't understand a word out of Eddie Redmayne's mouth? I've really listened closely to the ads, and literally cannot make out a word he says. Is there a purpose to this? Is he speaking in Parseltongue maybe? I haven't had trouble understanding him any other time.

Arcadia, I'm glad someone feels the same about Jim Carrey.

He irritates the hell out of me, and his annoying image sticks, so it was bothering me during the movie and I wished they would cast someone else. Still Truman is his best movie. Plus I love Ed Harris.

PS I remember an interview at CNN, when Jim managed to annoy Larry King to a level where it was clearly visible. :D

I think one should separate the art from the artist. Like or hate Carrey he did a great job in this film.

Also I feel quite the opposite of what you described here. I'm glad they casted him especially because they could have taken any other actor, but they chose Carrey and gave him the chance to show some of his acting skills beside just being funny and all.

I understand what Arcadia means about the mayonnaise, but I must have liked Carrey just fine in this particular role, because otherwise I wouldn't have been left wanting more. I also like some of his goofy roles, but preferably in small doses.

I agree about Jim Carrey, he's a bit OTT for my liking, and although I liked The Truman Show I think I might have found it better if there was another actor cast. I liked him in The Mask though.

Girls am I the only one that thinks Jim Carrey is absolutely hilarious? I actually think he's one of the funniest guys in Showbiz.

Don't judge me.
