One of my English professors was intrigued by the fact that Dunkirk means literally hill-church, same as Churchill (who was PM at the time).

Actually, dune-church is more accurate.

Yes, it's equally accurate.  But dune means hill (which is why "sand dune" is not redundant, at least not historically).  "Dunes" is basically the same word as "downs" (which originally meant "hills" -- not "racetrack").

I would guess that Dunkirk is a Norman-French name, derived from the same Scandinavian roots that gave Scottish the word "kirk" (again meaning church).

Do you think BC would have made a good Elrond? He's got elfy eyes.

Possibly. (Good face shape for it too.)  I thought Hugo Weaving was a bit of an odd Elrond myself, but I got used to him.

Of course, Elrond isn't 100% elf, he's also part human, which may explain why they cast someone who wasn't all that ethereal looking.

Benedict Cumberbatch would have been an excellent elf. But I think he made a pretty decent dragon too :-D

I was too used to Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith, it was weird to get used to him being Elrond.

^ Me too.

Me three.

Plus I never imagined Elrond as being that severe; to me he was more like Gandalf, but without the age and the beard.

The severe may have been in the script, and you can't blame Weaving for that.

The main thing that bothers me about Elrond is how much older he looked sixty years earlier. But then Legolas did too, so maybe it's an elf thing. ;)

I've never read LOTR, so I wouldn't know which actors were suitable or not.

Last night I rewatched Star Trek Into Darkness, in preparation for reading a writer friend's STID fan fic. We are meant to feel bad for Khan, are we not? Or is it only Cumberbatch fans that do so?

I always thought you're meant to feel some sympathy for him.

Any thoughts, lol?

Oh sure, why not.  I could see him getting up to some shenanigans in his tweens, or any time before his journey to the Lonely Mountain.  He's got that adventurous Tookish side, after all.  :P

Doubtful after he got back though; he was viewed as too eccentric and with too much suspicion.  Also the other Hobbits seemed to annoy him at that point, lol.

We are.

In fact, I was rooting for him :D.

I don't know about other version of Khan, but I like it when they make villain as multi dimensional character instead of moustache twirling evil. In fact, some are so good that I'm more fascinated with the villains.

Eh.. do you also find that Khan is... HOT! :p :D

I agree with Artemis. Though I can imagine that some widow ladies might invite him over for tea, in hopes of becoming Mrs. Baggins and sharing all that gold.

Definitely!

What I found funny: he surrendered after the rescuing the Enterprise crew from the Klingons, and his hair was all messed up from fighting. After they handcuffed him and were leading him through the Enterprise, his hair was all neat and slicked back again. I thought, "Aw, he's gone and fixed his hair!"

Probably keeps a comb in his back pocket for just such an occasion. :P

Elbafo, did you notice how quickly Van Buren popped up when you mentioned Khan? ;) Let's see if we can make it happen again....

KHAAAAN!

Oh fer ...

Don't let poor ol' Prof. Tolkien hear you say that, he'll rise up out of his grave and start rewriting the whole thing again to explain it. :p

I had a yen to watch a movie last night, and quite literally the ONLY thing the little mom 'n' pop down the road had to offer was 12 Years a Slave, or some variant of one of those Fast and Furious movies. So 12 Years it was, and it served to remind me how much I miss seeing our Benny. Why is it always glut or famine with this guy?

Ahem ... anyway ... y'know, I didn't like this movie as well as I thought I did. It's missing something, but I can't quite put my finger on what it is. It's harrowing, but ... is it too episodic? Or too pretty, maybe, for its subject? Did anyone else have that feeling about it?

Khan????? Where where where??

No Khan?!? *shake fist to the sky*

Grumbling, tidying up whiskers and go for exit.

P.S

@12 years: yes I felt the same. Didn't like it, I think I wrote about it some pages back, can't remember my reasons, but mostly I failed to feel about it.

Has anyone seen "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" and liked it?  I tried watching the first episode, and I donno... it's pretty weird.  I had some trouble following it.  I'm deciding if I should give it some more time or just forget it.

Haven't seen any of it, sorry.

He has quite a few projects coming up... so it will indeed be a CumberFeast once more. Does anyone else read the books his upcoming shows are made from in preparation for watching them? I've recently read The Child in Time, and now I'm wading through the Patrick Melrose books. Ben will be perfect as Patrick.... OMG!!

I can't decide whether I want to read them (spoilers!) or not. It's probably a moot point ... I never take time to read novels anymore. I couldn't even make it through the first third of The Book Thief without wandering off.
