Oh, I couldn't wait at all, and it's really nice imagining Benedict narrating the books and acting as the characters. I've already awarded him a couple of BAFTAs for those performances. Well, in my mind. But in reality, he is long overdue!

Finally saw spiderman homecoming!

I LOVED the fact that they re-used the 60s intro!

Went to the library and came home with DVDs instead of books.

A Walk in the Woods ... disappointing, given how much I liked the book and Robert Redford.

Theory of Everything ... again, disappointing. Too soap opera-ish with all the focus on his marriage instead of his genius. Bleh. Good performances, but a missed opportunity.

The Grand Budapest Hotel ... fell asleep during the first half hour, didn't bother to watch the rest.

Caught on TV ... Awakenings. Love this movie more every time I see it, although it just reminds me again what a loss Robin Williams was. Oh, Robin, how could you bring joy to so many and keep none for yourself? *sigh*

Saw Theory of Everything awhile ago and see why Eddie Redmayne won his oscar but agreed not my first choice for a re-watch

Saw Grand Budapest Hotel, and you really didn't miss anything.

Haven't seen the other 2.

Grand Budapest Hotel, I think I didn't finish that one too.

Haven't seen the rest.

The Circle, Tom Hanks & Emma Watson.

The story idea has potential, but it's not executed well. There are good actings but there are very horrible ones as well.

I think the story is too one sided and most people seem to be very dumb, the world around her is unrealistic and one dimensional. (not the main premise as I think it could be very realistic in near future)

I watched Grand Budapest last week and I liked it, couple of the lines gave me a good laugh. I don't think I'd go out of my way to rewatch but it entertained me enough. Not seen the others.

Never even heard of The Circle, but what a great cast. Is it anything like The Net with Sandra Bullock? I really liked that movie when it came out, but I saw it again recently and wow, it didn't hold up at all.

There are some movies whose perceived quality seems to depend heavily on external factors. For example, I had seen Murder by Death in the theater when it came out, and found it pretty blah. Some years later, I walked into a friend's TV room in the middle of some utterly hilarious movie -- and was astounded to discover at the commercial break that it was Murder by Death. My theory at the time was that the movie had been filmed in a way (e.g., lots of close-ups) that worked better on television, but of course it could have been my mood or multiple factors.

Alex and I had each (separately) seen Slapshot in the theater, so when we saw it available on videotape, we jointly jumped at the opportunity. And we each thought it was just about the stupidest, most boring movie we'd ever seen. Maybe it's simply one of those things that's funny once? I really have no idea.

I remember seeing "It's a Mad Mad World" (I don't remember how many "mads" are in the title) when I was a kid and thinking it was funny. Then I'd see it again on TV every once in awhile, and would think it was a real snore. Then one time it was on, and for some reason my mom and I laughed so hard at it we almost hurt ourselves, especially the scene at the end where everyone's being flung off the fire truck ladder. Then saw it again sometime later and wondered why I thought it was so funny. Etc. I have no idea why I can't make up my mind.

Same with the pie fight at the end of "The Great Race"; sometimes I literally cry with laughter, sometimes I think it's the stupidest scene ever filmed. Go figure.

Very true, there are some movies I hated the first time around but loved the second time. And vice versa. And plenty of movies I thought were objectively good but not my thing until a second watch.

Hmmm, I'm trying to think if that's ever happened to me. Since I'm less likely to ever watch a movie again if I hated it the first time .... not so much, maybe? Can't think of an example. But the other way around ... loved at first, hated it later ... yeh, that's happened. The Lethal Weapon movies come to mind ... I've become too delicate to withstand that violent humor, apparently (but I still get a kick out of the first couple of Die Hard movies, so ... maybe not? :d)

For me, the timing is important to decide objectively whether I really like a movie or not.

Normally I avoid watching something I think it'd be good if I couldn't concentrate (noise, background) because I wouldn't appreciate it as much and probably give it the wrong rating. At home, It's seldom that I sit still, I usually have my phone on hand or doing chores so sometimes I miss important scenes that affect my appreciation.

I like watching movies on the plane and cinema because I'm forced not to get distracted or tempted to do other things, or when I'm about to sleep, which led me to watch Sherlock in the first place. (That is very objective method there, good stuff would keep me awake. Spoiler alert, I was planning to sleep in ten minutes for SIP, but ended up finished the whole episode and started TBB once I woke up).

Anyway, do you guys have 'guilty pleasure' type of crappy movie that you like?

Mine, I don't think it's crappy, I think it's good actually, but I could see it being viewed as crappy. I always like Death Becomes Her, I think it's hilarious with great irony and satire (and great casts). Not long ago I rewatched it again and still like it. :p

Hm, Disney movies maybe? I don't have time to watch much these days. I chuck Fight Club on a lot, but that's because it's my favourite film rather than a guilty pleasure.

I do the same if I think something will be good, same with books. If I'm reading something in public, like on a train perhaps, and I realise it's likely to be good I'll read something else instead and save the good 'un for when I have time to properly appreciate it.

I haven't seen Death Becomes Her for years but I remember finding it funny at the time.

Did anyone ever watch Mystery Science Theater 3000? It's not that I loved those movies so much, but Joel and the bots were hilarious.

I love Disney cartoons, but I don't think they're crappy. Same with the Marvel Universe, and Japanese anime. (Actually, a lot of it is, but I don't watch those.) Ummm.... old westerns, maybe? I'll still watch almost anything with a horse in it. There was marathon of Audie Murphy westerns a few years ago, it was great. Terrible movies, I had a ball. :d

I used to like those Ray Harryhausen movies with the crappy stop motion photography, but bored with them now.

Rocky and Bullwinkle!!! Not a movie, of course, but the animation was definitely crappy. But the humor is brilliant.

Posted

Actually, I think Rocky and Bullwinkle IS a movie now, though I haven't seen it.  The ads looked kinda slick, not at all like the original, so I think the minimalist animation was indeed part of the charm.

By the way, we're showing our age, calling the show "Rocky and Bullwinkle."  Seems to me that Rocky got bumped from top billing not too long after the show started.  Kinda like Richie Cunningham, I guess.

I was looking up what it was called (The Bullwinkle Show) and discovered June Foray died a few days ago. :( She was the first voice actor I became aware of, and she's always held a soft spot in my heart.

Aw shucks.  I loved her too -- anybody who could voice both Rocky and Natasha was OK in my book!

Oh, speaking of voice actors, did you ever see a (short-lived) sitcom called The Duck Factory?  It was about a small studio that produced cartoons about a duck, and the cast was remarkable.  The star was a young Jim Carrey (before he became Jim Carrey), but regulars also included real-life voice actor Don Messick (as the voice of Dippy Duck) and real-life comedy writer Jay Tarses (as the cartoon's writer).  June Foray and Bill Scott had brief guest appearances in one episode.  I loved it!  So of course it only ran 13 episodes and is not available on DVD.

I am in the process of watching the live action version of Beauty and the Beast (a few scenes every day, don't really have time for a whole movie right now) and I love it! It follows the animated original very closely but has a lot more added depth, for example they gave almost every character a backstory and found plausible reasons for why they act like they do. Emma Watson is a wonderful Belle.

I just tried to watch La La land, am I the only one who thinks it's overrated and dull?

I couldn't get into La La Land either. It just didn't grab me like I thought would.

Red & Red 2 9/10 for both.

If you haven't seen either it's like John McClane meets Jason Borne tossed into a comedy and add some all-star supporting cast.

I dimly remember seeing maybe one episode. No idea if I liked it or not.

I have a habit of falling in love with shows that have a short run too. Roar, Earth 2, Firefly, Freaks and Geeks.....

You'd think we'd have some overlap, wouldn't you? Lessee, what are some of mine -- Coronet Blue, Love and War (short-lived in the sense that it was wonderfully quirky for a while, and then they "fixed" it -- which describes my reaction to Mork and Mindy as well), Nearly Departed (with Eric Idle), Struck by Lightning (with Jack Elam as the semi-retired Frankenstein monster), Tenspeed and Brown Shoe (which is at least mostly available on DVD), Kaz (which I sure wish was), If Not For You (with Hank Azaria), and I may think of more.

Of your list, I've heard of Firefly on this forum but never watched it. Earth 2 sounds familiar. I think it's a show that I used to get mixed up with another show.

The only one I've heard of out of any of these is Firefly, and that's likely only because of the movie. Cancelled shows I liked were Touching Evil (USA, the UK version went on for a while), and Unforgettable. :(
