Hmmm....... and what about "M"?

Eeerrrr.... I guess that's who I was really talking about. "M" standing for "Mycroft". Does that make Bond's real name Holmes?

Only if Bond is supposed to be related to M.  Is he?  (I haven't seen anything since Sean Connery was playing the role.)

Not sure. I haven't seen Sky Fall yet and I guess that is supposed to have some back story.

I'm obviously late to this conversation, as these movies have been out for awhile, but I'm new to the forum, so I'm catching up. I love ALL things SH. I love the original canon, I LOVE BBC's take on Sherlock. But I will admit, I've never gotten into Elementary, so I guess not ALL things. I have a hard time with Watson being a girl, and just the premise of the show doesn't work for me. I've tried to watch it.

However, I LOVE the Guy Ritchie movies. I was disappointed in them at first, mostly because of RDJ's Holmes. As someone else as stated, I think JL's Watson is perfection. Right look. Right performance. I think he does a great job. But after seeing each movie a couple of times (I've seen them more than that by now) I just kind of take it with a grain of salt, and think of it as just another interpretation of SH.

I know that in the canon, he was a strong and fit guy who could handle himself in a fight. But he didn't spend all of his time fighting. That bothered me at first that RDJ's SH is a fighter, getting in the ring and what not. But I've kind of grown to love his action hero take on SH, it's very modern and *blushes* kind of sexy.

I do not like Ritchie's Lestrade. I am a big fan of Rupert Graves and his Lestrade and the relationship he has with Holmes and Watson. The detective in the movies is just too bumbling... or something. I don't know how to describe it. I'm not a fan.

NO Moriarity is every going to beat Andrew Scott's performance. One of my top three villians of all time. SO perfect and insane. But Ritchie's Moriarity isn't bad. He's just not Andrew Scott.

Una Stubb's Mrs. Hudson is another that just can't be replaced. I need to read through the canon again for many reasons but one of the reasons is because I don't really remember what impression of Hudson is given in the canon. Ritchie's Hudson is much different than Stubb's. I'm curious which, if either, is closer to the canon. Does anyone know?

Maybe all this has already been discussed. I haven't read through all of the replies yet. I just wanted to voice my opinion while I was thinking about it. I can understand how some diehard SH fans would be turned off by the Ritchie films. But I really love them.

So you're saying that Sherlock has spoilt you for any other interpretations?  :D

I haven't read all of canon, but near as I recall, Mrs. Hudson is not particularly well fleshed out there.  Sherlock's Mrs. Hudson may derive more from the Brett series than from canon.

I was looking for something that I clearly remembered posting in this thread, but couldn't find it -- then realized that there were two threads on this subject.  There didn't seem to be any confusing overlap, so I've combined them.

Sorry about that, genre -- I've made it look like you were repeating yourself.  Feel free to edit your post(s) if you like and/or hide one of them.

No worries. I DID repeat myself a little bit but I'll see if I can edit it or something.

I have to say that I did not see the second film because I hated the first with such a passion, it made me want to gouge out my eyes. I do like RDJ as an actor but not as Holmes the fantasy action hero. I simply could not connect the character with Sherlock Holmes in any way. However, I blame Ritchie, not RDJ, for the general awfulness of the film. The man has about as much subtlety and perception as a visually impaired walrus.

Good movies - I have them both on Blu-Ray.

Must say I liked Jude Law's Watson more than RDJ's Sherlock. And they did have good chemistry on-screen. But it just didn't feel like SH to me, more like Tony Stark visits Victorian London.

Love the picture!

I have only seen these movies once each when they first came out.  I don't remember being blown away by them, but did find them enjoyable enough.  Certainly didn't start me down the mad path to total fandom like BBC Sherlock has lol.  I think I will watch at least one of them today just to remind myself what they were like.

This weekend I also began re-watching the Jeremy Brett DVD's...I think I am developing a bit of an obsession.  Then again distraction is the best way to cope with the wait for season 4!

Obsession might be the right word there - with Jeremy, it's all-consuming!

I think the reactions belong here and not to the TV-thread:

OMG: it's reference after reference after reference - or it's my fever?

ETA: Stephen Fry as Mycroft!

ETA: Sherlock leaves the wedding!

ETA: Sherlock in drag. Me wants it in S4!

Mycroft nekkid! pg18.gif Did he just called Sherlock "Sherly"?!? :o

ETA: Moriarty looks like Mark G.

OMGOMGOMG, they mention my city in that! Will they come? I'm in my nighties! panic.gif

I have checked the web - indeed my in the back of beyond city was mentioned - not by ACD, but by the filmmakers...

ETA: Holmes and Watson dancing together - people will talk...

ETA: Sherlock in painted undies would be another eye-candy.

Liked the ending with the typewriter. I could imagine this as an open end for our S. Pity it was already done.

ETA one day after:
Both movies are entertaining, but not necessary anything I would like to have on DVD. I have a feeling that Mofftiss borrowed much more elements from the second one. It started with the room full of red threads all over the walls.

It felt a bit like a "Find a Reference" quiz :)Which I suppose is even more fun if one watches the movies in the order they were made.

There was a moment at the beginning in the restaurant when Moran taps his glass and everyone immediately leave. This was sooooo our Mycroft, I have no problem imagining such a moment in the show.

Was Mycroft running around naked from canon? I found him funny and jovial and not at all a wielder of power. Our is much more after my taste. On the other hand Stephen Fry's Mycroft might be just much better on playing a normal human being. :D

Still, mentioning my little city was a real "gulp" moment. I have some history of my obsessions dripping into the real world, so I might be a little oversensitive to that. I even found a little article about it in the archive of our local newspaper. But then I was disappointed that it wasn't in the ACD canon. :P

Can't wait for them to release the third one! As much as I love Freeman/Cumberbatch, I have always been a fan of RDJ/Law. Even though I think the second film was subpar to the first one, but that's just my personal opinion :)

Posted

Agreed. I just watched it recently, and it failed to sustain my interest, even though I love RDJ (Jude Law, not so much).

I really want to rewatch the first two movies when I get a chance.  I think I was too new to the Holmesian universe when I saw them the first time to really appreciate these.  I like the idea of a Sherlock that is a bit of a brawler and a bit of a mess; it's one way of seeing the character among many interpretations.  And, I remember thinking that the "shoot the wall" scene, where RDJ is just sitting there in a pile of paperwork and detritus and pistol smoke, looking dejected and half out of his mind with the boredom of it all, is one of the finest interpretations of that scene ever done.

I must re-watch the first two movies as I’ve only seen them once each. I remember mentally filing them under ‘enjoyable romp’ but I think that another viewing is in order.

I wish that someone would make a ‘proper’ Holmes movie though. A few months ago I watched a movie called Sherlock Holmes and The Shadow Watchers directed by someone called Anthony Mann. It was appalling! It was made even worse by the director taking the lead role. He was quite chubby and totally unsuited to the role. Perhaps no one would be keen due to the Guy Ritchie movies.

They've been "planning" a 3rd movie for about 5 years, lol. It's been put off so many times, at this point I'll believe it when I see it.
