I hate people touching my feet, just the moment he went for my ankle I'd have run a mile.

I don't like people who insists to impose their values to me, we all have our own way of life and nobody can change it besides by our own will. People who try to force others to live according to their personal set of rules, usually in the name of making their life easier according to personal standard, are loathsome low-life. You may live with your own rules of what is 'proper' and loads of ought to and should to but if you dare to enter my territory with your rules that doesn't make sense to me then be prepared to live according to mine or be prepared for a war you will regret ever triggering on the first place.

Like Jehovah's witnesses? I get that. Anyway, it was coming out day recently and guess what happened? People came out as straight! I mean really, coming out always involves fear, anxiety and stress. Some of us can't do it because they can get disowned! So for the love of God stop treating it as a joke!

"Coming out as straight"? Huh? How does that work? I mean, coming out implies you were closeted before. Haven't ever heard of a closeted straight person.

Are they just taking the piss or trying to make a point? If so, what point? I don't get it.

I'm guessing they took a piss, maybe the point they tried to make was: stop shoving your sexuality in my face!

I think some straights feel like the media currently give so much attention to gays that it seems like straights don't count anymore.  So they're basically saying, "Hey, I'm here too!"  I doubt they're intending to mock you, FL, just feeling a bit ignored -- kinda like sibling A on Sibling B's birthday.

Really? Not enough attention? Boo hoo.

I wonder where anybody gets that impression. I think it requires pretty selective observation.

Nearly every blockbuster movie or TV show has a romance and, new productions included, it's nearly always a straight romance. There are shelves and shelves in every bookstore and library full of fiction and nonfiction dedicated to relationships between men and women. Gossip mags dedicate nearly all their pages to spreading rumors, lies and drama about celebrity love life, most of which is of course straight.

There is really plenty of representation for straight people. It's just not marketed specifically as such because, being the majority, they aren't perceived as anything special. "Straight" is the default, when we hear "love story", most of us automatically picture a guy and a gal, only if it's explicitly labeled a "gay love story" does that mental image change.

I am not necessarily saying there's anything wrong with this. Most people on this planet just are straight or at least straight enough to pass as such. So it's reasonable to assume the most likely until proven otherwise. But there's really, really no lack of "straight representation" and just because same-sex relationships are getting more media attention than formerly and a better legal status, that doesn't mean other people are suffering any kind of loss outside their own imagination.

What you say is all perfectly logical. But human nature is still human nature, and if it feels like someone else is getting more attention than you are, it's only natural to feel slighted. It doesn't have to be logical or even accurate.

And of course I could be altogether wrong about the motivations here. It's just my best guess about other people's feelings.

But mostly I agree with J.P., with the even more important request that people stop defining other people according to their sexuality. Unless you're trying to get them in bed, what's it to you?

Agree, I've noticed that whenever there's a LGBT character on tv most of the time s/he is a walking stereotype and the sexuality seems to be only thing we know about him/her. There's more to us then our sexuality you know?

Oooooh, you've stumbled into one of my pet peeves ... people who think just because other people are getting attention, it means they're being slighted. Too much of that driving our politics right now, imo. One group gets a hand up, another group's gotta hate on 'em for getting something they didn't. Drives me crazy. Think I'll crawl back into my hole.

To be fair, the media do seem to get carried away, which can be annoying.

But you're right, that's no excuse for people to "get even" with whoever's getting the attention.

My pet peeve is attention seeking behaviour in general, whether it's a celebrity doing or saying something stupid to get attention (Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus and Donald Trump) or people participating in a Tv show to get attention by becoming famous (most of the "Come dine with me" participants).

We've got a big ole storm rolling in off the Atlantic, and in response to the wind the powers that be (damn you, Mycroft) decided to close off an entire section of the M4 - the equivalent of a major interstate. It took me forever to get home, and likely would have taken even longer if I hadn't happened to leave work late and miss the worst of rush hour. Missed a class I wanted to go to, had my phone in the boot so couldn't even potter about online whilst sitting there with the engine off. Finally, finally got home - and immediately did the one thing that fixes all ills. Made tea.

You might be interested in seeing the bizarre skies we had here this morning thanks to the smoke and sand caught up in the storm. Here's how it looked in London, that's not sunrise or sunset, that's mid morning.

Yeah, have seen all the apocalyptic pics online. Made by the same Ophelia that let us have 23Celsius today and bright blue sky. BTW, I haven't known about the fires in Portugal until today. Funny how the attention of news agencies gets distributed.

I have a friend just north of Portugal in Spain. There's a bunch of fires up there as well threatening her place while she's in a different part of the country.

That photo of London makes me think of the fog of Conan Doyle's day (or rather, his night).

Agree about attention seeking. I suppose some of those feel left out as the world opens up. Apparently it's lost to them about the struggle, challenges and real difficulties of the actual coming out term.

..., had my phone in the boot so couldn't even potter about online whilst sitting there with the engine off.

I wanted to say that the picture is gorgeous and I don't sympathize with your suffering since it looks gorgeous and now you are safe and sound, but then I restrained myself because for the possibility of feet smelling phone landing on my face, but now I say it anyway because apparently I misunderstood that 'boot' means compartment in your car, so I wasted two minutes thinking about what kind of nuts are you for putting your phone in your boot and risk passing out smelling that when you make a call.

See what your language does to non speaker??

But, we can always talk about boot, the one that wrap around feet, again. :p

Lol, yup, I keep my phone in my shoe and my purse in my bra. Doesn't everyone?

My mind played the ultimate cruel trick this morning - when I woke up I was absolutely convinced that it was a Sunday. I couldn't figure out what the hell was going on and why I'd set my alarm. It wasn't just as soon as I woke up either, for about 5 minutes I was lying there confused.

Nope, only you and Maxwell Smart.

...I have no idea who that is.

Sorry, I'm on my phone or I would have provided a link.

Maxwell Smart is the inept secret agent in Get Smart. In the original TV series, one of his hi-tech spy gadgets was a phone embedded in the sole of his shoe. So whenever he needed to use the phone, he had to take his shoe off. I think there's been a new version, but I don't know if they used that gag or not.

They made a movie version of that show which was a slap in the face (at least a little in my opinion) to the wholesomeness that was the original. The original version was one of my favorites to watch reruns of as a kid.
