Not fun.

My excuse is that I stayed up too late then woke up before my alarm. And I can't get a nap in today either :(

End of the school year, baby. Waking up's always hard 'round this time. :P

Well, for me. Everyone else on here seems to have gotten through school already.

Well, I'm pissed. My parents had a bad fight a few nights ago, and I snuck out of my room to get my phone to turn on some music to drown out their and the baby's screaming. And then my stepmom came in all pissed about me taking my phone in at night ('cause I have had a history of texting at night) and confiscated it. And not even three minutes later my dad came in yelling at me about all the "sh*t you pile on top of everything else we have to deal with" and took my laptop as well. Even after that I came out of my room later and told him and my stepmom to stop fighting, then went back into my room and it all went quiet after that.

My alarm clock turned over to 4am and my dad came in. He said, "I can yell at you all I want." Because he provides for me; he's the reason I've got a roof over my head and food and wifi. But everything's still tense and he hasn't even attempted to make amends yet, and I haven't heard anything about when I'm going to get my things back. My best bet's a whole week -- that's the usual punishment for going on my phone past bedtime.

I'm just angry because my parents don't trust me just because of things I've done two goddamn years ago, and because my dad thinks he can get on this freakin' high horse just 'cause he's the breadwinner. And they wonder why I have agonisingly low self-esteem.

Oh, I so hated that attitude from adults when I was what I'm guessing must be your age. My parents are really kind and indulgent, but I still detested being dependent on them. I complain a lot about my job now and my workload and so on, but at least I have my paycheck at the end of the month that is all mine, and the only person I have to consider when spending and saving is the husband I chose all by myself.

Like my mother always said, at least you don't get any younger. You'll grow up and have your own place and your own funds and will be able to make your own rules (it's past midnight in my time zone and guess who is sitting up in her bed with her laptop on her knees and who had chocolate for breakfast this morning ). It will happen, believe me.

Until then, do you have anybody whom you can turn to when things are tough at home? Grandparents? Aunts, uncles, friends, cousins, siblings?

Just a side note: At the risk of parents everywhere hating me, but I'd like to point out that it's your parents f(censored)ing job to provide for you. It's not a huge favor or anything. They decided to have you, you're their responsibility, g(censored) d(censored) it.

Well, that's what I'm holding onto for the time being.

Let's see -- currently no connection to grandparents (phone's gone) other than email (which they don't check all that often). Aunts and uncles, same deal.

Friends? I used to have a friend group I sat with at lunch, but we broke apart and now there's only two people around. The tables practically deserted. I don't really have close friends at school; my best friends don't even live within biking distance. No connection to my besties right now, other than by email and Instagram, but I prefer to talk things out with them aloud (and alone -- parents are eavesdroppers by trade).

Cousins? I have about fifty thousand, all in China, none of their contact info unfortunately.

Siblings? Well, he's the screaming baby in my lovely retelling of my stupid sob story, so he's out.

So right now, all I've got is me.

Tch, good point. Thing is, they get ticked off easily nowadays. Can't blame 'em -- everyone calls me annoying, except my dog and my best friends. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well, I'm glad to hear you've got a dog and a best friend. That's something, at least.

You're certainly not annoying on the internet (at least not around here), and that's more than can be said for many, many many people in this world. I feel a bit worried about you, to be honest, but that's not annoying.

Can't do more for you than listen and sympathize, I'm afraid... And tell you again and again: Hold on until adulthood. It does get better. I repeat: It does get better.

My excuse for the sleep issue is being a night-owl with a creative thread that was running high. I did manage a 20 min doze this afternoon before taking off again.

I had 1 basic all-nighter during my schooling years. 19 years ago with 2 days left of classes for the seniors (aka me) I stayed up all night to finish a sociology presentation, got back to my mom's from my dad's place (they were separated at the time & have since gotten back together), slept for 30 min, then got up and went to school only to not give my presentation because we ran out of time.

Bendy, it sounds like you're between a rock and a hard place.  On the one hand, you're not comfortable with your parents, but on the other hand, you don't really dare to bite the hand that feeds you.  Unfortunately, that's the way it tends to be for kids (though some have it better and some have it worse).  In fact, it may get somewhat worse for you over the next few years, because you'll be feeling more and more like an adult, but your parents will still see you as a kid.  (Trust me, they'll never see you as an adult!)  And parents never trust their kids -- that's their job.

Are you planning to go to college?  If so, and if you can pick one where you'll live away from home, in a dorm or whatever, that should give you some relief, as well as some practice being sort of on your own.  And if you're not going to college, then you'll presumably have a job and and an income and your own home all the sooner.

So hang in there, it's only a few more years.  Yes, I know, at your age a few years last an awful long time (because it's like 20 or 30% of your life).  But at least it's finite.  You'll get there.  The rest of us did, and we're very nearly sane.  ;)

Hang on until you can stand on both of your feet by yourselves, Bendy. After that, you are a free person, free to choose with who you have contact with. Living your life well is the best way to thumb your nose to those who treated you bad.

Have you considered taking a part-time job?

Beside giving you some personal incomes, some acquaintances (upgrade-able to friends),

it's quite valuable to have something you can call you own, gain a different view, taking time off from home.

(a lot of relationships are saved because of distance, I can say that much).

As adult, working and independence are great, can't speak for all, but there are bills to worry about, back-stabbers at work, stupid bosses and colleagues, hundreds of deadlines, politics.. there are a lot of time when I miss worrying about schools, skinned knees or whether I would be scolded for climbing tree or playing in the rain too.

Bendy, if it's any consolation*, your parents probably think they're doing all this for your own good -- helping you to develop a sense of responsibility or something.  And that may well be the truth, from their point of view.

When my brothers and I were kids, we were forever disagreeing with our father, but he would just say, "When you're older, you'll understand my point of view."

Fast-forward several decades.  I was chatting with one brother, and he asked me, "Well -- do you understand now?" and I said, "Of course not."

I think what Daddy failed to take into account was that, even though our age difference was responsible for some of our differing views, mostly we disagreed just because he was him and I was me -- we were two different people with two different views of the world.

So your parents aren't necessarily being unreasonable -- from their point of view.  They're legally and morally responsible for your welfare over the next few years.  Being responsible for oneself is a plenty big job in itself.  Being responsible for a whole other person must be a really huge job, especially when you can't really control everything they do.

I'm not saying you ought to feel sorry for them or beholden to them, but just try to remember that every parent is an amateur, trying to do the best they know how, but not always succeeding.  Must be about as frustrating as being a kid!

* probably not!  :D

I had heard the name Keirsey before, but had never read any details.  That's interesting, Shadow.  I found this test on the same website, so a person can find out which Keirsey type they are.

It says I'm an Idealist -- gaaahh!

Idealist here too -- and proud of it! :D

Posted

It says I'm a "guardian / protector". I'm not sure if that's right, but it sounds flattering and cool so I'll gratefully accept.

This page has a brief description (near the bottom) of the four types, and the Four Temperaments drop-down menu (at the top of the page) has more details for each.

I must be a borderline Idealist -- could have sworn I'd turn out to be a Rational, and perhaps I will if I retake the test when I'm in a slightly different frame of mind.  Wish they gave percentage scores, like some of the Meyers-Briggs tests do.

Posted

@Carol: Maybe they include the percentage in the 'purchased' report just to make you curious lol. Keirsey-Bates are different from MBTI, or so I gathered from reading a whole lot of articles since Arcadia started the temperaments-madness :p

Posted

I'm also an idealist, but that doesn't surprise me as that is what I usually get on these (INFJ).

OK, just took the test at www.16personalities.com and got ISTJ.  Huh.  Although, I was really borderline on the N/S and T/F.

Posted

Yup, I know they're different.  It's just that I like that particular feature of the MBTI tests.

Actually, I may be the one to blame for the Myers-Briggs "madness"!

:DDD keirsey's first report refused to be downloaded by mobile. Too bad for me. It supposed that there's Linda Berens version too.
