Yes, I'm sure it's far more program than I need, but I'm worried about being able to open my old pmd files .... and I have literally hundreds of them that I use on a fairly regular basis (too many to redo/convert, that's for sure). Arghgh.....

InDesign is able to open the older Quark files, so it might be possible to open PageMaker too. But there could be limitations to that, so it's better you do your research before you spend that batch of money on InDesign. There is plenty of fora out there, somebody surely had that problem already.

Another thing: do you know that Adobe products are only available as Cloud subscription with monthly fees?

That's a change I didn't realize that Adobe did. Also from my understanding PageMaker became InDesign so InDrsign not opening PageMaker files would be crazy & a bit not good to quote are favorite non-time lord doctor.

What do you all use Pagemaker and InDesign for?  Work?  I've never heard of these programs.

Well.... *%$^&^*!!!!!!!! I have ZERO interest in the ^&*$*% Cloud, even if it were free. That's it, then, I won't be upgrading to InDesign. At least Photoshop Elements is still available the old-fashioned way ... and when that goes, Gimp, here I come!

Desktop publishing/page layout ... I used to do a lot of flyers, publications, postcard designs, etc. for various clients. Not so much any more (except for myself) but I also have all my class prospectuses (prospecti? ), artist bios, calls for entry, etc. set up in PageMaker. It's more intuitive to me than word processing, really am not looking forward to doing without it....

I'm not surprised with software going cloud and/or download only as many new laptops don't have CD/DVD drives built in anymore.  Will definitely have me trying to decide what software to use for card, flyer, etc making when I finally get a Mac.

I suspect it's the other way round, isn't it? They've stopped having drives because the consumer is being pushed into using the Cloud? Or perhaps that's just my cynicism showing. Or my age. :p

It's a mix.  The younger people tend to do more downloads, less physical while the older people tend to like the physical and less download and then I'm near the age where the transition is at.  I prefer physical to download for most things.

I honestly don't mind downloading software; most of my recent software purchases have been downloads.  But I'm not a fan of storing any of my stuff (pics, videos, docs) out on the cloud.   Something about the idea creeps me out.  And I like have an actual optical drive so I burn things to disc for friends, can play movies/shows from disc if I want.

I don't mind downloads at all either (my Steam library is bigger than I'd like to admit), what I've got a beef with are those subscription models that are currently being pushed by some publishers. No, I don't want to pay for your software more than once, thank you very much .

The new Office subscription thing is ridiculous!  Sure it's not such a large, initial amount... but it can really add up over the years.  No thanks.

Yes, that's my gripe as well -- also, the assumption that "everyone" has ready access to a good internet connection. Just another way of stratifying society into haves and have nots. :soapbox:

... or the assumption that "everyone" has internet access, period.

Just came home and heard about the mass shooting in Charleston. Another sick person with easy access to a gun. Why, why, why do we keep allowing this to happen.....

Posted

I heard about it last night before the full extent was known.  The interesting thing that most people won't hear about is 1 of the victims that survived found the shooters FB page (before he was caught) and wrote a loving, forgiving post that speaks of what a true Christian should be like.

Did anyone see Jon Stewart on the shooting?  I teared up...

I'm really going to miss Stewart. :(

While I certainly share Stewart's sense that something is wrong, I wonder what he believes should be done about it.  Somehow I don't think he's proposing death drones over South Carolina.  And unless there's some indication that the perpetrator represented an organization, I don't see how the comparisons to Al-Qaeda are terribly helpful either.

Gun control.

That might help, might not.  Even on days when I'm all in favor, I can't argue with the bumper sticker, "When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns."  Laws apply only to law-abiding citizens.  Criminals don't care.

Statistics would suggest, Carol, that it's not quite that black-and-white, however. When a formerly-law-abiding citizen snaps for whatever reason, they can do a lot more damage when there's a gun around, for example. Canada may have fewer criminals than the US, on account of their natural politeness ;), but they sure don't have less than one-sixth of them.

Something the police know all too well, alas.

It's not just that guns are legal, it's the sheer overwhelming availability of the cursed things. I could literally walk down the street to buy a gun, but have to travel 7 miles to buy hard liquor, 8 miles to get a driver's license, and 40 miles to find the nearest employment office. :wtf: And the last two require standing in line for several hours .....

:( What a world, what a world.....

Hannibal got cancelled by NBC today.   Hoping somebody (Netflix?) picks it up.

BUT... Gatiss retweeted Bryan Fuller's tweet about the cancellation...  so I'm all    about that... lol

Oh, dear God. It's three days and I'm already fed up with the continuous presence of others. Or maybe it's just the noise: the street it busy, my roommate snores, and there must be renovation work going on nearby, and they use something that makes constant whizzing tone all day long. I'm ready to trow things at the wall for the lack of a proper gun.

Bored.

Bored, bored, bored.
