While I was out there, I noticed a couple of commercial jets flying low enough that I could tell one of them was probably a FedEx plane

I am thinking the unusual path happens because it had been four minutes and the FedEx official had probably learned his lesson.

Oh, of course!   Why didn't I think of that?

Huh?

Go watch the end of "His Last Vow" again!  ;)

Their is a thing called a ceiling that affects flying as I've heard mentioned several times over the years watching the droning weather voice on our 2nd PBS station. I wonder if Indiana had a low flying ceiling to affect the altitude (then other conditions affect the flight path).

That makes perfect sense, except that it was a bright sunny day with just a few wispy clouds.  I'm most likely to notice the planes going over at night, when of course I can't really see how high they are -- so maybe I'm just not real observant.  Or, as you say, other conditions.  It was unusually windy at ground level.

Okay, y'all just did that to make me cry, didn't you? Viewed it (twice!) and I still can't watch that @#$%^& ending without tearing up, I don't care what we may have learned since! And I still have no clue what you are talking about....   :goldfish:

Sherlock's plane in Vow had a rather unusual flight pattern as well, Michele, due to that whole "turning around after four minutes" thing ;).

If it helps you any, I didn't understand the joke initially either, then went duh after I figured it out.

Alan Rickman passed away, and I am so sad.   :(

Posted

So am I. My favorite film of his is Snow Cake opposite Sigourney Weaver. I haven't seen it in a couple of years but it was done quite well.

Posted

Does anybody know the movie "Deeply, Madly, Deadly"? I will forever connect Alan with this film.

Him and Bowie... so sad.

Well, every time it happens, I'm reminded of the sad fact, that we are doomed to see most of our heroes go, as they tend to be older than us.

Posted

Yes, I just saw that about Alan Rickman, very sad.

Posted

Wait - what? Alan Rickman is dead? No way.

A few news checks later: Seems to be true. Oh my god. He wasn't very old... I somehow can't quite believe it. His poor family. I mean, he wasn't much older than my own father.

If the first two weeks of the new year are any indication, 2016 can go hang :(. First Bowie and then Rickman, and both at only 69.

Am I the only one that thinks that the story is equally heartwarming and beeepin' scary?

http://www.hithenews.com/syrian-man-and-daughter-selling-pens-to-earn-living-for-family-390.html

The scary part:

The identity of the man and his daughter was found merely twenty-four hours after the iconic photograph was taken. They were quickly tracked down and contacted

I think if they'd found them without even the photograph, it would be scary. Or if they didn't know he was selling pens while carrying his daughter. I think the description plus the photograph amounts to some pretty good clues. If he'd left the area by then, though, I'll bet it would have taken longer.

But I know what you mean ... people are connected in ways we never dreamed of even ten years ago, maybe even five years ago. Hard to get off the grid. Hope the Mafia's not looking for me.....

Exactly!

The thought that someone could find you based on a photo taken on the street...thtrenches.gif
And that even without a software recognizing faces. There is no safety in anonymity anymore.

This is quite scary, I agree with you, but, at the same time, I feel more protected from criminals or "bad" people. I mean, if there are cameras on the buses, at the corners of the streets, criminals aren't very incouraged, because the know that they could easily be recognised thanks to the photos taken by cameras.

Have you guys heard about NSA?

It's lengthy, but worth the read.NSA Files: Decoded

This is mainly the exposed high profile case. Breach of privacy is not new, and may not be technically illegal, there are ways and loophole for the authority, which is worse.

Basically, privacy is a very rare thing in digital world. We hear now and then about internet hunting and shaming for idiots stupid enough to post sickening things in their social media.

If member of public can do that to certain extend, imagine the big players.

In short, if you are connected via telecom and internet, or any activities that have digital access to your personal datas, chances are the governments, not limited to US, know what you are up to and able to build your profile. It doesn't matter that you don't have connection to any suspicious activities.

There are a lot more to read, you can look up Edward Snowden as a very legitimate whistle-blower and he is still paying for it.

Re: NSA - this is not so scary because they would have, at least theoretically, needed a reason for their research. But the case above looks to me like those people were found by average users of social media.

I generally would have no problems showing my ID to a police officer, but that case above feels like having one's essential Data tattooed on one's forehead, visible for every idiot crossing your way.

But maybe I'm old fashioned.

I'm afraid I didn't take the time to read the whole thing, I'm just going on my memory of what I heard about in the news. But having worked for both government and big business ... I'm not as concerned about what the US government does with information it collects about me, as I am concerned what big business does with that information. They both collect more information than they have a right to, imo, and I agree it's scary. I just find my government less threatening to my privacy. So far. Hope it stays that way.

I note that it doesn't bother any of us enough to keep us OFF the internet, though.

Cruel, Arcadia. :p I am the one who keep throwing rock into a calm pond to provoke discussion. Your average fun-loving (if slightly naughty) fangirl.

God No. Where should I go if I need Sherlock fix?

And here is social interaction that I prefer to. :P

Welcome back! :hugz:

Whoa..That's all?

No lighting up all the corners (or put Moriarty there) so she doesn't go and hide there again?

On second thought, yes, I think that's all, putting Moriarty in the corner would lure her there, what am I thinking. :P
