I suppose if, say, you have only a DVD player, and your friend has only a Blu-Ray player, and you both want the new stuff in this set, then you could order the big set and split it.  That way you'd only be paying $90 apiece for a $22 set (plus toys).

I haven't been able to look at the BBC Shop's UK pages (e.g., for the S3 special DVD set or Blu-Ray set) at all the past couple of days, though I can bring up the BBC America shop (e.g., the big honkin' set page) just fine.  Is anyone else having trouble with either site?  Or not having trouble?

See this is what gets me annoyed,  most fans of any TV series or movie etc buy the DVD's as they are released.  They do not wait 1 1/2 years after the release on DVD to see if perhaps another better addition is to be released.  Why not release the big best of at the very start  along with a cheaper version.  Doing it this way just reeks to me of trying to make money.

PS... I own 9 difference versions of Buster Keaton's The General and love each and every one of them.

Like it- LOVE it.  Steamboat Bill Jr, his last film made under his own production company, off he went to MGM and never recovered  So whilst it is a great and very funny film it is tinged with sadness.  My username is Convict 13 after one of Buster's films and it's also a nice little take on the belief that all Australians come from convict blood,  mine do not we are German descendants.

You're apparently referring to the British edition, vark (because that page won't even load for me), and yes, that edition has always been advertised as including MHR.  Unfortunately, word is that the big expensive American edition does not include it, and that seems to be the only edition that Americans are allowed to purchase.  Added:  There's good news -- see below!

I've bitten the bullet and preordered it from Amazon. At least it's a little cheaper.

Oh, thanks for that news, Fox -- I don't think Amazon was offering it at first, but at least now they've got the big honkin' Limited Edition Gift Set. for a "mere" $138.

Oh, but lookee here -- Amazon UK is offering the British Special Edition -- and they explicitly say "This item can be delivered to United States."

Yay for Amazon!!!  And yay for region-free DVD players!

No, no, no -- Amazon UK is offering the regular special edition DVDs (not the "gift set") for just 15 pounds (something like 24 bucks), plus shipping to the US.

Of course, this is the region-2 set, so those who live outside that region will need a region-free DVD player.

The product description from that Amazon UK page says this:

All new bonus materials include:

  • Never-seen-before outtakes with Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Mark Gatiss and Rupert Graves
  • Exclusive deleted scenes from series Three
  • Brand new audio commentary with Una Stubbs, Steven Moffat, Sue Vertue and Mark Gatiss
  • 3 x 45 minute PBS documentaries that include behind-the-scene footage
  • 1x60 Unlocking Sherlock PBS documentary
  • ‘Sherlock - The Prequel': a seven minute mini-episode

I assume they mean the "prequel" to Series 3, namely "Many Happy Returns."

My bad Carol, the thought had crossed my mind (fact that the description only reffers to the UK box set) before posting because I thought unlikely that different box set would be produced. But at that price you have to be sure indeed.

For my part I will aim for the season 3 BR special edition.

If I read the info at that link correctly, it is ONLY the S3 DVD that is a special edition......?

Think I'm going to play the patience game, my gut tells me the Special Ed. will find it's way to US shores eventually.........

Well, I don't know if anything's missing: it just looks from the description that the S3 disks are the only ones that are "special"; i.e., have new content on them. The S1 & S2 discs are the same ones we know and love, if I'm reading it correctly. I just pointed it out in case someone planned to buy the first two again, thinking they would be getting new content.

Actually, looking at it again, I'm wondering if the Season 3 set isn't just the exact same set as before, but with a third disk added. Although you'd think the commentaries wouldn't be on a separate disk....

The set that I've linked to on Amazon UK is not the humongous "gift box" that's being sold by Amazon US (and I believe you're absolutely right about that one).  This Series 3 special edition has episodes for Series 3 plus the new extras, and it's offered for about $24 (US) plus shipping, as opposed to the hundred-and-something for the "gift" set.

And yes, if they're talking about the sort of audio commentary that they did for Series 1 and 2, those need to be on the same disc with the episodes.  So these discs are apparently not the same kind we've already got.

Well, if you have Netflix, Series 3 of Sherlock also has three short twenty-minute documentaries on the villians, the reunion for S3, and the characters. Plus, there's the Unlocking Sherlock documentary floating around as well. But Netflix doesn't have Many Happy Returns or the Unaired Pilot.

There are two different sets of S3 documentaries, one produced for PBS and aired with the episodes, and the other included on the original S3 DVDs.  Each set consists of three documentaries.  The special-edition DVD includes the PBS documentaries, which are, as mentioned above, 45 minutes apiece.  Since you say the documentaries on Netflix are only about half that length, I'd guess they're the ones from the original DVDs (which are not repeated in the special edition).

I'd guess that Netflix doesn't have the commentaries or the outtakes either.

What extras are you attempting to access, Marc?  And where -- are you talking about Netflix?

Here's a deleted scene from His Last Vow. I assume it's from one of the special editions DVDs, but I don't know. I am waiting to receive mine. Should arrive in a couple of days.

I feel like warning you that the scene is with Magnussen, and it's as gross as the man himself. I really, physically hate what goes on here. It's almost worse than the John-Watson-face-flicking scene.
