Well, if he's on Jimmy Kimmel, that should be a certain sign that he's done filming the special.   And there was the rumor that he was going to marry before the Oscars... and a perfect date would be Valentines Day...which falls conveniently on a Saturday (easy travel day)... I think it would be a perfect day for him to marry!  Just icing on the romantic cake!

The Special finishes filming today.

Sophie was pregnant when the  Hamlet tickets went on sale. Not that it would have mattered, Benedict was already committed to doing the play.

Realities of doing a long play run: 7 shows a week over 6 days, with 6 late nights. I accept Hamlet may not be as demanding as Frankenstein, but there is no way Benedict could film a TV series at the same time. He is nearly 39 and an actor, not  Superman.

Rumour has it that the engagement was announced so early because of the pregnancy. The new rumour is they'll marry the first free weekend BC has...this weekend.

I doubt the pregnancy was planned, unless they somehow know they're having one of these rare babies that sleep through from birth.

However I have no doubt they are both delighted regardless.

Well, I bought my Hamlet ticket in August 2014.  She wasn't pregnant then.  I do think at this point she's between 4-5 months along.  It's not something we can say for sure was planned or not, but since there are birth control methods to prevent such things, I would suspect that not taking the precautions was not an issue for them.  It might just be that it happened much quicker than they were anticipating, but that it wasn't entirely unplanned.

No, he can't be filming and doing the play full time.  Just wouldn't really be possibly.  He needs all his focus on the play.

The latest rumour was saying 7 months, but I'm not sure.

The other thing I meant to say...

What's with the suggestion that series 4 is the last?

I don't think so.

Technically speaking, Series 3 could have been the last trilogy -- you never know.  Moftiss say they've had Series 4 and 5 basically mapped out for quite some time now, but Series 4 is the only one that's been officially approved by the BBC, which may be why some people are concerned that it could be the last (and other people are apparently hoping that it will be the last).

But as far as I've heard, that's strictly speculation, conjecture, and extrapolation -- and if I'm overlooking anything more concrete, I'm sure someone will point that out!

I can see it getting to S5, but I can't see it going beyond that.  So we need to take our SHERLOCK pleasure while we can.

I can see a one-shot special or two further down the road, though. You know, when they're in their 80's or something. Of course, half the fans will have passed on by then but still.... :p

Heck, I'm still teaching my friends just to SAY Cumberbatch. (really, why is it so hard? It sounds exactly like it's spelled! )

That reminds me, was this ever posted here?

I think I googled that once back in August or it could have been linked to from some other site (not this one) that I found while googling.  Some of them are good, others not so much my taste, but over all hilarious.  David Letterman had a Top 10 list for mispronouncing Kirby Puckett's name (former pro-baseball player with the Minnesota Twins).  I loved #3 as it was Kent Hrbek (pronounced: her beck).  That would have been fun for Benedict on that show.

ETA: And Martin's Top 10 Mispronunciations would probably have Morgan Freeman somewhere in the top 3.

I am sorry...really, where has all this speculation come from?

Every interview I've ever heard/seen has the whole Sherlock team saying they want to do this for ever.

Please, can anybody provide a link or cite where this alternate view has emerged from?

Incidentally, why would anybody want it to stop?

I think it will go on for quite some time, if not forever.  Certainly, I think it will go past S5.  I think everyone realizes by now that this is a franchise like Dr. Who or Star Trek, and the original stars will want to be involved as long as humanly possible.  I think we'll all be having these discussions well into our dotage!  (And probably brandishing our canes at one another while we fight about how Sherlock survived the Fall!)

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm basing my ... pessimism, if you will ... on past experience. Most shows burn out, period. Things like Dr. Who and Star Trek are exceptions rather than the rule, I'd say, and they've survived through a lot of rebooting, not continuing with the same staff and cast.

However, I really can't remember a TV show that showed up for three episodes every two years becoming a monster hit, either, so as far as I'm concerned anything could happen!

Cane polished and waiting.

Many of those "names" appear to have been invented by a Tolkien fan.

Added:  An American Tolkien fan.

Oh now this has got to be the silliest one:  Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch!  ;)

Odd that there's no Frumious Bandersnatch.  Make that an American Tolkien fan who's never read Through the Looking Glass.

I think Sherlock is in a really unique place in that it doesn't air on the regular.  I think it has the potential to go long-term.  Will it?  I dunno.  They could even get to the point where they're not filming as often as every 2 years, but still filming a few eps here and there.  I think that's the more likely scenario for it to continue long-term.

My impression is that at least some of the "Series 4 will be the last" talk stems from people not wanting to be blindsided by bad news -- so they make their peace with it before it's even been announced -- just in case.  And of course once that idea's out there, other people will pick up on it, and some will assume that it's actual news -- paraphrasing Moriarty, "I read it on Tumblr, so it must be true."

It's on Tumblr, you moron.  They don't have to prove it; they just have to print it.

I can only suggest people actually listen to/ read direct quotes for the Sherlock team and not base their deductions on feelings, Tumblr, or the tabloid press...
