... I have got a family friend in Chiswick, though she's really old, ....

Does she remember the Morstans?

I like how the only mention of Martin is in the title & tag.  Interesting article otherwise.

Here is the website..... good luck!

I'm looking at the Find a Venue page, and see several theaters within an hour's drive -- but does that page give only theaters that are showing Hamlet, or is it a list of all the theaters that ever show anything from NTL?

I do have a major complaint about their listing system, in any case.  It's bad enough that the list is alphabetical by town rather than by state and then by town, but I suppose they use the same system for all countries.  What really bugs me, though, is that they don't say what state the town is in.  There are five US towns named Bloomington, and at least two of them are university towns, plausible venues.  They list three theaters in Springfield -- but there's one of those in just about every state!  Would it be all that much work to say "Bloomington IN" or "Springfield IL"?  Aha!  They have a feedback page....

I found it difficult to work with too (although I can't remember specifics  ) but yes, that page is specifically for Hamlet. Down on the right hand side you can put in your zip or your country, so if it lists Springfield, it should be the Springfield near you.

The problem I had was getting through to the page where I could actually purchase tickets ... ended up on Fandango eventually, but I can't remember the route that got me there, sorry.

OK, yes, the map works very well for me, and even asks if I mean "Indianapolis IN."

That's not the page I was talking about, though -- that one is accessed by clicking on "Find a venue" at the top.  It comes up with a list of theaters all over the US, but you have to guess which state they're in, because all they list is the town and the theater.  Even when you click on a particular theater, and it takes you to a new page, it gives just the street address, the town, and the zip code.  That latter item is helpful, of course, but it would be even more helpful if they listed the two-letter state code for the town, both on each theater's page and also in the "Find a venue" list.

I have suggested that to them.

Dear Carol, I shall ask her this weekend, since we phone each other every fortnight, as she is my aunt's childhood friend and I worry about her health  The one we really need for that has passed away, her mother, who had been living there all her 96 years! That would probably take us back to 1895 (only joking)!

It is never right to lose one's livelihood because of another's fandom! Here I have to take a very strict stance of a fellow countryman, M. Arouet, known as Voltaire: I disagree with everything you say, but shall defend to the death your right to say it! Cumber collective had better remember that dictum!

I'll say. Stupidity on both sides, sheesh.

According to the article, the man didn't lose his job, he resigned.  His employer had merely opened an investigation into his social-media activities, which I suppose they had a right to do, since he identified himself as their employee before insulting their potential customers.

Also, if he has the right to state his opinion online, then so do the fans.  And finally, (to quote my kid brother) he started it!

But the whole mess really is incredibly stupid, isn't it?

Dear Carol, if he recognises he's unemployable, he did lose his livelihood.

On another note altogether, Heather, my aunt's friend, whose mother is buried in the old Chiswick cemetery, because there's a new one also, to complicate matters, doesn't remember any Morstan headstones, male or female. I then went online to findagrave.com, and you wouldn't believe how many Mary Morstans are buried all over the U.S.!

Perfect plot device: send her back where she came from, and this time don't lift a finger to save her, like Irene! It would make my day, really. :D

This thing is nasty and huge. This guy is reaping what he saw.

I think it's unfortunate Amanda posted this without checking the whole story first.

Another beautiful example how information gets twisted.

HERE is another perspective.

Sad that Ben's name gets attached to the story.

Moderator Comment:

That link is quite informative, however, that guy's tweets are also quite NSFW so proceed with caution, please.

Indeed you did, but I thought that "nasty" didn't even begin to cover it . So I added a comment (mind you, this is not a warning or something, you did nothing wrong at all, just a comment) to warn people to bring children or elderly relatives out of sight of the monitor before clicking - not that I would willingly subject anyone to that kind of misogynistic tripe but I agree with you, it's important to know what exactly that guy who now plays the victim card has been spouting for all the world to read.

Well done, both of you.

Death threats are never acceptable.

Of course not.  But have you seen any of the death threats he claims to have gotten?  We have lots of examples of his foul-mouthed, prejudiced insults, but as yet not one single example of a death threat aimed at him.  If I got death threats (heaven forbid!), I think I'd post a few, so people could see 'em, but as it stands, the closest thing to a death threat that we've seen here is his tweet urging the Cumberbatch fans to commit mass suicide.

Edited to add another post trying to see a bigger picture - nothing really new, beside the author's perspective.

Well, I think the "truth" is somewhere in the middle so I try not to takes sides (beside that it's UGLY). After all, we don't know the whole story and never will.

That's the problem with www. You actually need to verify everything, before making any statement, because memes (in their primary definition) are spreading with enormous speed, and you get mutated copies from copies from copies very soon. Sherlock's do your research is now more important than CD could ever imagine.

What generally drives me crazy is "Freedom of Speech" used for an excuse to be an idiot.

The freedom of speech fanatics forget that it includes the responsibility (e.g. getting angry/nasty reactions) for one's words, and that other people will execute their freedom. box2.gif

The "painting Shakespeare" article was cooool.

I enjoyed reading that and thinking about the MacBeth production starring Michael Fassbender coming in October with the magazine doing an article in their next issue.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but freedom of speech is a very hard-fought right, inalienable and all-encompassing! People have died in France and Denmark because they exercised this right against zealous jihadists. It's a universal imperative: the problem lies with how each one of us who enjoys it in a non-totalitarian state, like China and North Korea and several African countries, chooses to exercise it!

Free speech is paramount: barring issuing threats and inciting hatred, all should be acceptable. We have laws of sedition to protect individuals.

I understood the technician's argument was that his free speech was being curtailed..

Something just dawned on me (I'm even slower than usual these days! :( -- but in my area, east coast USA, the "live broadcast" of Hamlet is scheduled to start at 7 pm.

That means in order for it to be an actual live broadcast, they'd have to be performing the play in London at midnight. Methinks that's not actually happening.....

So does that mean the "live broadcast" is actually taped? Are there going to be any actual "live" broadcasts? What am I missing here? Does that 7 p.m. refer to London time, and it's actually being broadcast at 2 p.m. here? (that would be awesome....)

I ask because a friend wants to go but doesn't want to be out that late on the 15th, she'd rather go to a matinee re-showing the next week. I'd rather see it live if such a thing is possible. Anyone know?

You are not slow. I didn't even thought about it.

Well, I think - because they show it again later in many places - that it will be a recorded version. Otherwise it would start after midnight.
