Okay, so all the news articles with Moffat/Gatiss quotes are saying S4 is about "ghosts" coming back to bite you.... So let's talk about what in previous episodes was left  unfinished, especially in regards to Moriarty.

1. Who besides Jeff Hope was doing little murderous jobs?

2.  What happened to the rest of the Black Lotus group?

3.  Who were those snipers in TGG and TRF?  Was Mary one of them?

4.  Since we know that Irene isn't dead, will she be coming back for unfinished business?

5.  Who are the disgruntled others who helped Moran set up the bombs?

6.  What about the terrorist threat that was spoiled with the flight of the dead?  Will they want to strike again?

7.  Did Moriarty burn the heart out of Sherlock yet?

Mary's past will have to be dealt with at some point, and the fact that she shot Sherlock (which I don't think Mycroft knows yet).

So... what else is unfinished?

The Golem is still at large.

Sherlock receives a lot of death threats.

The CIA guy probably still wants to kill him too.

Baskerville is still operating.

The "other one".

Redbeard.

The Improbable One still hasn't been identified. :p Maybe he's improbable because he's a ghost!

Even more... how could the mind palace events in TAB give Sherlock the clues he needed to know what "Moriarty" would do next?  Something is hidden in there right in front of us that we can't see.

I stopped reading that ghosts quote at romance. Damn you, Gatiss.

Or it could be one of Sherlock's "intuitive" leaps that us mere mortals are incapable of making, like deducing the father-to-be in TEH. I still  haven't recovered from that one.

I know! My brain kind of stuttered for a moment at that too. Then it occurred to me that it could be referring to Mrs. Hudson and Mr. Chatterjee, for all I knew.....

This is a good question. It does feel like Mary has more secrets waiting to be revealed.

It is interesting to consider this when coupled with their mention of romance too. I just hope they don't do anything too dastardly. When they talk about ghosts, to me it means they have to somehow have Moriarty appear, but in what context, I can't imagine.

Does anybody think Gatiss mentioning a story reaching its 'climax' means they are beginning to consider the show drawing to an end?

Just decided to reduce the intake of S4 "news" and, above all, speculations. Possible deaths, end of the series... why should I worry NOW? They will do what they want to do and nothing will change it. I will be heartbroken soon enough if that's their plan, but until then, I can just do... something... something else... like... ermmm... maybe more T-shirts no one wants? Put the Wallpaper on my bedroom wall with the Smilie as a night light made of diodes... and shoot it aferwards... ??

Anyway, I can try to avoid being unhappy already. Which is a good exercise for a RL worrior like me.

Maybe I can use a mantra: inmofftisswetrust, inmofftisswetrust, inmofftisswetrust...

As in, this will be the last season ever? No. I admit I've always thought they'd do five seasons, because that's such a classic story structure. http://www.storyboardthat.com/articles/education/literature/five-act-play If that's what they're up to, then we should start to see the fallout of Sherlock's actions in Season 4 ... which is what I'm thinking Moffat meant when he said S4 would be about consequences. Oh, and I also dimly remember something about how they've already plotted out S5.

Then after that, I figure we'll be lucky if we just get some occasional one-shots.

But who knows! In some ways I'm surprised they've kept it going this long. With this much of a wait between seasons, I find it amazing that the fans have largely stuck to them. But it really is an unusually good show, isn't it? They could defy all convention and keep it going for decades, for all I know. Or this could be the last we see of them.....

I'm not convinced that's your best choice of mantra! :D I'm leaning more towards there'salwaysthedvds, there'salwaysthedvds, there'salwaysthedvds.... plus I think I'll always be interested in anything Ben appears in .........

Well since I've heard them say they already have S5 plotted out, I suspect that it may be simply that the Moriarty arc is coming to  a close... I sure hope the whole thing isn't going to wind down in the next 3 episodes.

Here is an interesting conundrum, however.  By the time S4 airs, it will have been 3 years since HLV... so will there be big time jumps in S4 to account for the three years and bring it up to date?

Like both of you are saying, I'm also wondering about the five season (as the last one) possibility, and if they have a sort of climactic element this season there will still be many loose ends for the next one. I don't think they would cut things off after this one, surely not as half of us would go into shock!

I don't think it will finish this season, but when I heard Gatiss talk about a climax in the story they'd been telling since day one, to me that implied that they are planning on peaking dramatically this year in some sense, which suggests that after that they would have one, or even two seasons where they are concluding the story, but possibly with specials still to come.

This is the other thing: they are now coping with the logistics of these increasingly long gaps in filming, and what they mean for the narrative, and the audience, which I don't think they can keep up indefinitely. I do think that whatever their plans for Sherlock and John, they have a definitive plan of what they want to do with them, and it will depend on doing the stories whilst the actors are somewhere in the neighbourhood of their current ages (say within the next 8 years, at most). After that, if they have the 'big' stories told, they could certainly revisit occasionally for a TAB type special which might be mostly standalone, or for fun, without pressure for them to film another soon after, or struggle for time for the stars to film three long episodes.

Good gosh! In eight years they may have to cast another Mrs Hudson! Brrrr! What a train of thought!

No, I think that if the series end, the alleged "fanboy" creators should do so with a bang, not a whimper, and S3 was the beginning of the downhill direction, albeit only in tiny bits and pieces coming unraveled.

That's been their MO so far, so I suspect ... yes. Shouldn't be too hard, just stick Sherlock in rehab for a couple years.... :p

Ya think they'll go for a full 3 yrs?  Given TAB picked up where HLV left off?

The benefit this show has is that they dont' have any kids... yet.  Like Chandler (Carl) in The Walking Dead is aging WAY too fast.  So far they've generally ignored it.  lol

Well, S3 took us to the end of 2014, right? So they only have two years to make up ... yeah, they can do it. SiB alone took place over the course of a year or so.

Yes, well, given that even ACD thought Mrs Watson, nee Morstan, a plot device, they had better let the character disappear gently into that long, dark teatime of the soul, as Douglas Adams would have put it. The fallout in the series becoming a sitcom will be raaather interesting to monitor!

To add insult to injury, if they hadn't wanted an immoral, paid assassin in Mrs Watson, they wouldn't have written her character that way! They cannot have their pie and eat it, or suspension of disbelief will have to go out the window.

Which would be a fab material for a spin off

Can you imagine Sherlock in a group therapy?

I'd watch it. But hell, I'd watch Sherlock sleep, so that's not really saying much. :p

Yes, well, what they are doing at the moment has quite another name for it: mindf%#%; but I shall give them the benefit of the doubt if with the Almighty's help I am able to watch the fabled S4: for a time, it seemed a chimera, and I DO NOT TRUST Mr Moffat further than I could throw him: he's a proverbial tease!

I actually ordered the colouring book with the Sherlock scenes. Today I managed to colour the Speedys Cafe canvas blind already.

Guess I will take as much time to finish the pictures as they take with the new season, haha...but hey, at least no stress. :sofa2:

And it's fun, maybe it brings me back to drawing stuff myself one day. :goldfish:
