Good for Moffat too!

Wow! For representatives of a people who fought a long and hard guerrilla war to kick the hated British out of your land (no taxation without representation) you seem pretty chuffed about the whole thing! And the British Empire is as much a thing of the past as the Victorian version in the Special, as well as the newest Order on the list of honours. If it had been any of the Knighthoods, well, then... ^_^

Wow.  Could you just try to be happy for them????  :)

I am. Even if a bit surprised. Especially about Steven. The genre of his writing is hardly regarded a "high culture", no matter how good it is.

But yes, I am happy for them. It's also a recognition for the fandom in a way: we have an excellent taste. :D

In this day and age it is just a trinket, or some letters to put after your name! I would much rather he had got the Oscar or all those acting nominations which fell to the ground? Then, yes, I would have jumped for joy, because it would have been something worthwhile, tangible and coming from his peers! :sherlock:

I shall tell you a little story: in WWI, the second most decorated Ace after Freiherr Von Richthoffen was Ernst Udet. both he and Hermann Goering got the coveted Pour Le Merite: a medal created by Friedrich II himself for personal, exceptional valour: the whole Royal Guard had to fall out outside the Palace in Berlin whenever a Pour Le Merite holder passed the gates! Udet and his fiancée used this as a joke on one of their walks! What did he end up doing? Aerial stunts in Hollywood for Hughes, and he once won a car because the challenge was to pick Mary Pickford's handkerchief off the wing of another plane, childishly easy for the flying genius who committed suicide right before the beginning of WWII.

My own grandmother had to sell gpGrandfather's decorations to American collectors to put food on the table, so, no, I am not a great fan of royal medals and largesse!

My thoughts entirely...

Besides which, I want rid of the monarchy!

Yes, although I'm not entirely certain you wouldn't vote for a Stewart descendant to rule Scotland

You don't get an Oscar for your services to charity. Or drama.

And the Academy is nothing more that another kind of aristocracy.

Even if it might seem a bit too soon, it is still an acknowledgment, and I don't think anyone gets it for nothing. Just saying.

I'm cynical.

But then I have to live under an unelected monarchy.

Benedict is posh...that's why he's been given the award.

The fact that he deserves it, well that's just the cherry on the cake!

And it's a boy for Benedict and Sophie!

Is there any word on the name of the Cumberbabyboy?

Posted

Nope.  But I'm willing to bet the one of the names will be Timothy.  We'll know probably within the next few weeks.

That link doesn't work for me -- apparently the page has been taken down.  But that doesn't mean the news isn't true.  In fact, here it is from BBC News.

It must be weird to know your baby's birth is the most eagerly anticipated thing since, um ...... since the announcement that you're expecting .... :p

Wonderful news all round for BC! A handle after his name, higher than Moffat's, which makes it doubly satisfying for this viewer, and a brand-new baby boy! May it have a long and happy life, and possibly be called Benoit ( wishful thinking), as well as auburn hair and blue eyes!

I'm just waiting for some idiot reporter to ask him which event he's more excited about!  :P
