I was getting quite concerned that people had taken my post more seriously than I meant it.  I tend to play things up for laughs (I do this in real life too) and sometimes I forget that on the internet, where people don't really know me that well, people may take some of my exaggerated nonsense I post seriously.

Me too. (I find that judicious use of smileys is sometimes helpful.) But no, I didn't take your post that way either. It's just -- as Boton said -- there's so much blather on the internet. Even if you don't go looking for it, it's kinda hard to miss.

Did I dream that I read Benedict is supporting the retaining of the Human Rights Act?

I sometimes wonder if I could love this man anymore than I do already.....

You didn't dream it.  It's true.

Ciaran Hinds! Thanks for the tidbit sfmpco! He was truly amazing in that government series whose title has slipped my mind, and he is such an imposing figure of a man! I do hope he will play the King, he has it in him! Actually I have seen him in more series than I can count, but I love his portrayal of Captain Wentworth in Persuasion!

The Edison role would be cool.  Has he ever played an American before?  Would be curious to hear his attempt at an American accent.  Some do it better than others.  Hugh Dancy in Hannibal has got the best American accent.  If I hadn't looked him up, I'd have never known he was British.

Nevermind, just answered my own question:

So weird to hear...

What amuses/amazes me is the American body language. Oh, how we must come across to the rest of the world .....

I had a colleague that traveled to the Middle East last year and had an absolutely hysterical description of what it was like, as an American, to be picked up at the airport to go to his hotel.  His contention was that Americans come off as large St. Bernard puppies and are impossible to miss.   :P

We have a body language too?!  Oblivious, party of 1.

Could be worse, I'd rather be a puppy than, say, a man-eating slime mold.... :lol5:

Are we really that way, do you think? Friendly, clueless and loud? I hope we're friendly (but are we overly friendly? Fake friendly? :( ); clueless, yeah, okay, guilty as charged ... but the loud ... that makes me cringe. I suspect because I'm afraid it's all too true.

Oh yes. That grin, those gestures, the overt flirting, even the posture ... American. Unmistakably. Embarrassingly unmistakably.

See, I think that I attributed those things to just the character.  :)  Not that I know anything about the character... lol

Benedict has played Americans 3 times to my knowledge.  The above example(the police man) being the worst!

He usually does fine.

Love this bit from the second article:

The other lead character in this story is George Westinghouse, another pioneer of the USA’s electrical infrastructure, and a rival of Edison’s for control of the industry. Amusingly enough, you could put Martin Freeman in a good pair of chops and get away with the casting, and I’m sure a large sub-continent of Tumblr would swoon at that very idea.

After seeing the photo of Westinghouse here, I understand what they mean by "a good pair of chops"!

Each culture has its own body language, which can lead to some unfortunate misunderstandings.  For example, what one culture considers a normal, friendly distance between two people in a conversation can indicate icy aloofness to someone from another culture -- and creepy invasion of the personal zone to someone from a third culture.  Americans seem to be somewhere in the middle, so I've experienced both reactions.

I think it's important to remember that most people (in all cultures) are perfectly reasonable, and that these differences do not necessarily indicate any difference in a person's actual attitude, merely in the outward manifestation of their attitude.  So even though we American may tend to come across as overgrown, friendly puppies with muddy paws, we're not actually uncultured slobs, and more than our British cousins are all cultured snobs.

Yes, he plays the king.

Oh no, Westinghouse vs Edison, AC/DC all over again! Refrigeration and the electric chair vs. the  incandescent light bulb and the gramophone! Sideburns or not, I would rather not watch Sherlock and John fight it out over electricity! It would be like casting one in the role of Edward Drinker Cope and the other as Othniel Charles Marsh and having them fight over what kind of dinosaur remains each one had located!

I've never been able to find anything but those 2 scenes from that show, so I think we both know all we're gonna know!

We're not? They aren't? Well, there goes my whole world view down a sinkhole of despair ....

When we lived in Thailand in the '60's, it was perfectly common for men who were friends to walk around holding hands. Really freaked my Dad out. I wonder if it's still acceptable, or if it's been westernized out of them.

Yep, I remember pop star Boy George talking about how men in Italy were all huggy and kissy and walking around with handbags...but if you mentioned one of them was gay...you would get smacked in the mouth!

Though of course there are gay Italians!

I know India was the same as Thailand when I was there 15.5 years ago. I don't remember seeing that in Thailand for the week I was there right after India.

Another message via Twitter -> via Facebook. Benedict Cumberbatch patron of Odd Arts sent the young people from the Double Edge drama project a personal message.

Listening to this I realized one thing, which might be the main reason why he makes this confident / super-eloquent impression every time he talks. He hardly ever does all the ermmm-s, ehhhh-s and other odd sounds people usually make searching for words. The message above doesn't sound like reading from a written text. Still, it is so fluent.

Damn, he makes me feel so inferior sad.gif

Don't feel inferior.

They're taught that in Harrow anyway, but he is also a professional actor!
