Somehow I just can't picture Mr. Cumberbatch as Rumpole -- far too tall and thin!  Just as well this is a radio program, I suppose.

Well, we only have Leo Mc Kern as a point of reference in Rumpole's fifties, sixties and early seventies. He would not have been fat in his RAF days, nor when he "was called up to marriage", as he says in The Alternative Society. Tall is a problem, but a thin Rumpole was the one who caught Hilda's predatory eye at a social event. Besides, those robes would swirl even more spectacularly than the Belstaff

Dear fellow members, the second episode was pure gold! An original Mortimer story done with all the heat-seeking -missile dedication that Mr Cumberbatch has been known to bring to all his parts, and in the hilarious twist at the end of the original story, he is Claude Erskine-Brown's best man. If you want to listen to what kind of a train wreck he can make of it, (shades of SoT) you should tune in for the episode! Is there a blissful smile on this forum? Anyway,

I need to catch up on these...and also I owe my pal an apology, I hadn't actually realized they were NEW Rumpole!

I must admit the second episode stands head and shoulders above the first one! It's Rump ole at his best, always excepting Leo McKern. Very much look forward to the next episode next Friday, although the Blessed St Edithna and Hilda will ensure some of the fun!

I enjoyed today's episode. I'm usually not quite awake yet when the episodes start in my time zone.

Rumpole may or may not have been fat in his RAF days, but I definitely imagine him as stocky -- he wasn't actually an airman, after all.  And who knows what sort of man turns Hilda's head?  He was already a member of her daddy's law firm, possibly the only young single man there, so that may have been the main attraction.  Theirs does seem to be somewhat a marriage of convenience.

More toward the pap end, I suppose -- but they were at a high-profile public event.  It's not like someone shot the pictures through a hole in their garden fence or snapped them at dinner in a cozy little bistro.

I know that celebrities don't like having their picture taken without their permission, but frankly what do they expect?  Someone could take my picture at the grocery store and post it online, and I wouldn't mind as long as they didn't catch me at an awkward moment and didn't say anything unkind about me.  Of course nobody but me is likely to post pictures of me online, but my point is, I would not see it as a significant invasion of privacy if they did.  More of a nuisance, I suppose, especially if they kept at it.

Nope! He started together with Uncle Tom as CH Wystan's pupil, and Uncle Tom never married, but Rumpole won the Penge Bungalow case alone and without a leader (as he keeps reminding us all, ^_^) so he caught Hilda's eye as a possible high-flyer. Besides, in the Alternative Society, Bobbie, the former NAAFI, seemed to have a soft spot for him even years later! And if you remember how he describes his minor public school, Mortimer's only inconsistency, since it keeps changing names, he talks about being a scrawny chap. Quite ironic, really, since becoming a barrister was BC's alternative career choice, now he can act as a legendary one!

New photos.

Well, I'm not 100% sure if they qualify as official or paps.

He's starting to grow out the curls!

Do you mean grow the curls?

Not sure why, they're not filming until next year.

I suspect Dr Strange will be smooth.

Well, yes, Sherlock S4 shoots next spring, but it's okay for him to have some curls for Hamlet, and then his hair will be longer for Dr. Strange although it will be slicked back, and then there may be some project between Dr. Strange and Sherlock, maybe not, but the curls will be well on their way.  I do miss them.

I hate to be shallow, but what the heck, I'm on vacation, I might as well ... I miss them too, primarily because he's more attractive with longer hair. There, I said it. :p

... at least the photos are not paps.

Because they were taken by a photographer employed by a newspaper?

Because it was a public event, with tons of celebrities and lot of officially acredited media coverage. Being photographed comes with the tickets.

Yeah, personally I draw a distinction between Benedict pushing out baby in the pram(on the one hand) and him attending one of England's top Summer sporting events, sitting in the royal box!

Just making sure what the current definition was.  But yeah, I fully agree.  Not sure where "the line" is, though -- or whether there is a line.  Maybe it's more of a continuum, with hiding cameras in his house at one end and official photo-ops on the other.

Totally agree about the continuum rather than a line.  I don't know about BC's expectations specifically, but I don't think celebs can expect absolute privacy when they are in a public space (like a beach or whatever) when even members of the general public can have their behavior observed and photographed in the same situation/location.  Photographing someone on their own private property seems invasive, and photographing at a public event like a red carpet or a sporting event seems like it should be expected as part of the job.  In between lies the continuum.
