Phew! I'm still 7 months younger. But between May and October we are the same age.

And yes, it feels weird. I never felt older than 25 (or 40 by the new standards).

But he's looking better and better with the years, even if I like his younger self's curls.

BTW, this site is UK-based, so why doesn't it like/accept the British spellings?

As far as I am aware, this forum has no spell-checker of its own, so what you're dealing with is presumably your own browser.  Some/most (?) browsers allow you to choose a dictionary, and presumably British English is typically available.

(Finding out where the dictionary selection is, however, may be a bit of a challenge.  Firefox, for example, seems to enjoy moving theirs around.)

Apparently you missed my post:

If anybody can tell us all where one needs to go in each of the popular browsers in order to select a dictionary, please let us know.

Thanks, Arcadia!  (Now let's just hope that the browser people don't change any of those steps in their next rev. :P )

I wouldn't place any bets on it. I wonder where Microsoft will put the "Home" icon next ... at the bottom?

How have I missed seeing this before? A short but sweet little q&a with Louise Brealey, Lara Pulver & Una Stubbs, from around 2012.

There was a fun picture that went with it:

I thought this article was rather interesting.  It's basically about the history of Scotland Yard and how the public's early view of the police force was influenced by its portrayal in fiction, particularly Sherlock Holmes.

Excerpt:

At first, fictional detectives of the Yard were portrayed as almost superhuman figures, drawing on mysterious powers and capable of solving the most complicated cases. But something happened to change this in 1887.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle published A Study In Scarlet, the first of his Sherlock Holmes stories. One result was that the Yard's reputation in popular culture was no longer quite so flattering.

... By this time, the public had realised that in real-life Scotland Yard wasn't quite as clever as they had thought - a point rammed home when the still-unsolved Jack the Ripper murders started in 1888.

Ol' Jack doesn't seem to have existed in the Holmes Universe. At least I don't recall any references to him in canon -- am I overlooking any? or are there any villains who might be Ripper clones?

I'm guessing that Doyle felt there was no way for him to have any sort of obviously Ripper-like character, because what would be the point if he couldn't have Holmes solve the case -- and he really couldn't, could he, because the case was really hot at the time. Later on, after it had cooled down for a few decades, authors started to play with theories.

Seen this yet?

A video game, maybe?

It’s listed in another thread somewhere on here. I forget which one and it’s been less than 48hrs. Definitely don’t have a good Sherlock-esque brain working this morning. And I just had to double check that my glasses were on.

On that other thread, it appears that a movies-with-other-stuff organization is planning to do something BBC-Sherlock-related in London fairly soon.  There has been no official announcement of that, but someone traced their cookies and found it.

I don't know how the heck I missed seeing this before … maybe I thought it was a previous one that I'd already seen? At any rate, Mark, Steven, Sue and Amanda answering fan questions at Nerd HQ, circa 2016.

Tumblr! Sherlock’s very own Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat will be doing an Answer Time right here at 11am EST on Monday, July 9th. We’re kicking off the #SummerofSherlock (more to come on this soon!) before the opening of The Game Is Now in London later this year.

So they're finally going to tell us something about that big secret Sherlock thing in London?

Posted

They already revealed what the thing in London is, an escape room at £54 a person. I’m not sure of anything else Sherlock related in London.

Thanks, I hadn't heard that.  What is an escape room?  (Sounds like a bolt hole, but why would I want one?)

Posted

You and a group of friends are in a room trying to solve a puzzle (or more) to be able to get out of the room. There is a time limit. Some escape room experiences have more than 1 room to the set of puzzles you are solving.

Oh, right, I think I do recall reading about that. And I presumably said not really my cuppa.

I couldn't get the above links to work, so here's another one to the Q&A with Mark and Steven on Tumblr. Mostly they fool around but the serious answers are interesting. https://221b-investigates.tumblr.com/

You may have to scroll down a bit, or check the archives.

Here's a behind-the-scenes shot from "The Game Is Now" locked room thingy.

It's nice to see John/Martin laughing. Did he do any laughing in S4? Other than the jellyfish joke....

And … I don't think we've seen this before (???) A tumblr Q&A that was done with Mark & Steven about the same time (??) https://221b-investigates.tumblr.com/post/175481476937/tumblr-sherlocks-very-own-mark-gatiss-and-steven Not much new but kind of fun.
