What did everyone get for Christmas? What was your favorite thing?

My husband gave me a very sweet card promising to buy me a guard ring so my wedding ring will stop slipping off my ring finger. (My fingers were thicker when we got married). We went to a jeweler yesterday and tried to find something, but the saleslady there was very unfriendly and stuck up her nose when she heard what price range we had in mind, so we left disgruntled and are now looking for a friendlier place that would simply alter a nice ring that I already own.

That woman made me feel really shitty. Like it was shameful to not be rich. She also lied; she said they didn't have anything like what we were looking for when there were several rings well within our budget clearly marked in the window.

But I didn't feel like pointing that out because by the time we got to that part of the conversation, all I wanted was to get away from her and her sparkly displays.

Good for you!  :applause:

I got a 3DS game, a tablet and some money. I can't really chose, lol.

Unbelievable. I had a similar experience once; I went into a jewelry store looking for a watch battery. Once she found out why I was there, the lady behind the counter refused to wait on me, even though I could see watch batteries in the display case. The customer who was in there before me even offered to wait while the lady found the right battery, but she just ignored both our requests and kept showing the customer some merchandise. I was so gob-smacked, I simply walked out. I like to think if I'd been the other customer, I would have walked out then, too. And yeah, it did make me feel like some lower life form. Yeesh.

I generally stay up till midnight most nights so that shouldn't be a problem for me tonight.

I don't think the sleeping is the point, so much as the not partying.

I got a head start on my NYE clear-out, and I'm glad I did. There's no way I could have gotten it all done otherwise. I still might not, I have tons of computer backups and file organizing and such to do. But other than computer things, all I've got left is laundry. So I can mostly kick back and relax tonight, make some hors d'oeuvres and watch fireworks go off across the world.

I hope to be sacked out by midnight, although in a proper bed, not sprawled on the couch like that. If the New Year's Eve programs weren't so thoroughly awful ... but they are, and the house gets cold at night, so soft warm snuggly bed for me.... If I just had a cat to put on my feet, life would be purrrfect.

You can borrow one of mine, they're doing my nut in.

I'll be up stupidly late, because I'm always up stupidly late. Whether I'll be morose or fine remains to be seen.

Aren't they, though.  :(  Guy Lombardo was kinda boring, but at least he wasn't certifiably annoying, and he wasn't loud either, so one could carry on a conversation if desired.

^ They really are.  :/  I never know what to watch on NYE.

There's a fabulous Leonard Bernstein concert on PBS at the moment. I think it ends at 10, though. At which point so will my evening, I suspect.

A concert that he conducted, or a concert of music that he composed -- or both?

Composed. I think I fell asleep during the West Side Story bit, though. :(

Happy new year to you too.

Didn't completely stave off the grimness, but nothing too bad. Didn't watch the fireworks, which probably helped, I always feel a bit sad when I look out over the valley, see everyone else letting off fireworks and imagine them all having fun. Ignoring it worked better.

I find that's true for me too.  Halloween especially makes me feel that way, but for the last few years I've started more or less ignoring it, and it's helped somewhat.  It's always too cold around here on NYE for most people to set off fireworks, so I don't have to deal with that at least.

Be glad you don't live too close to me. The party I was at (10 min from my house) had fireworks in the sub-zero weather just after midnight and then some 'neighbors' (not sure how far away from me) were setting some off at close to 3 in the morning just before I finally went to bed.

Wow, 3? I think it’s a bit rude when people set off fireworks that late. I heard some in the distance right at midnight, but other than that it was quiet around here.

Sigh... Here, the first fireworks went off around 7 p.m. and I still hear the occasional bang and whistle. People really try to make the most of their purchases around here.
