Plus, it's Benedict's pet peeve, according to an interview if it is set up the other way around, :D

I can't say I get massively emotive over politics, I have an opinion (obviously given previous posts) but I don't get hugely bothered. Religion on the other hand, that does get me fired up! Toilet paper... meh. I'd prob put it over the top but I don't care that much!

Look on the bright side: the US are still a democracy; other places, like Turkey, are beginning to lose that right over religious, quasi-fundamentalist issues. Let's enjoy S4 while we still can, in a democratic Europe. (Not that I couldn't get absolutely monstrous over Brexit, but that rift may still be repaired!) In the meantime, there are quite a few serviceable bunkers left over in Germany, Poland and Austria, just in case the red-headed, red-blooded redneck-elected leader of the free world decides to unleash something.

So the NZ and Italian prime ministers just resigned, what is it this year with PMs resigning?!

Posted

I'm just glad the year is almost over because I'm tired of everyone dying. Oh God, Maneul *sobs*

I don't think any of the people who have popped off so far I've been a fan of particularly but I'm sure my time will come.

Looks like somewhat different answers for each, but in general the voting public just appears to be in an anti-incumbent mood, don't you think? But why .... we're still trying to figure that out here in the States, I wouldn't presume to guess why it's happening elsewhere! :d

They are not anti-incumbent, they are anti-trust, anti-hedge-fund and anti-neo-liberal! As Stephen Hawking recently pointed out, the middle class will get hit by the meteorite of job insecurity, loss of income and social welfare, so it's back to the early 19th century with the added pressure of globalisation and religious extremism. Globalisation not so good for the US, either, if they cannot control it!

Did anyone else feel like Culverton Smith could have been a stand in for Trump? If I didn't know they'd written TLD before he ever got elected .....

Posted

Yep, there's a whiff of Trump about him.

Phew.

Let me put it this way ... it wouldn't surprise me if it were.

You think he murders people? :o

Posted

Not with his own hands.

But he surely seems to have a potential to blow up the whole planet with his ego.

He cannot even take a criticism from an actress, what if there is a real conflict he has to deal with?

I don't follow his tweets, but each time someone quotes some of them, I cannot believe what I see. It's worse than any distopia I've read so far.

Yup, ditto to that. The way he reacts to things is terrifying, especially since this is a man who will soon have access to nuclear weapons.

No, I don't believe he murders people, I'm just saying I wouldn't be surprised if we found out we did. Based solely on every word he utters/tweets, the man has no moral brakes.

More than a decade ago, I went to work early, as usual, no one was around yet, which is my favorite time to settle down with coffee or tea and read newspaper, and was horrified by two potraits of close-up faces, bloodied and dead that took almost half the page.

You see, there were almost none, nothing graphic in the newspaper in the place I was that time, it's either censored, pixelized or not shown, only in words.

Those were the pictures of dead Saddam Hussein's sons (if I remember correctly). And again, if I remember correctly, it was some sort of victory.

Iraq war under Bush administration saw at least hundred of thousand deaths from both sides and allies, during and post invasions, including plethora of civilians, and WMD was nowhere to be found.

Whether the war is justifiable or not in millions of other reasons, it was the day I sat there horrified and wondering why it was considered a victory and why everyone around seemed to be very nonchalant about... I don't know.. a lot of things. There should be another way, should it?

Trump has not, yet, done anything in that scale although it really doesn't look very good as words and ignorance could be as or more damaging. We'll see. Let's hope..or whatever..

Looking at the trend around the world, I keep wondering if smarter people are hiding from politic.. because they are smart.

Well according to history, the far right tend to come into power during times of social and economic upheaval. This is usually because far right parties do a better job of projecting the big-daddy-who-protects-everyone image than any other party.

As for Trump, it really looks like they're trying to get him impeached. I'm not sure if all those allegations about his ties with Russia are true but I don't think the CIA, FBI etc are necessarily looking for truth. They think he's insane and they want to impeach him.

I hope something happens, the idea of Trump being in power horrifies me.

I don't know ... I think impeachment would just divide this country even more, and that's the root of the problem, as Surelock just pointed out. Too many sides pulling in too many opposite directions, and Trump is just fanning that flame. It's pretty scary.

I keep thinking the best case scenario is just let him fail so spectacularly that the entire country turns against him and tosses the bum out in four years. Except I'm afraid we'll all be saluting Putin by then. And I'm only partially kidding.
