Good on you, Arcadia! I have re-watched the teaser trailer so many times and studied their facial expressions, especially those of the gentlemen in the background, so many times now that I have come to the conclusion if it happens in reality, the creator borrowed it straight from Alexandre Dumas: the final scene of the Three Musketeers, with Sherlock/D'Artagnan taking the place of the executioner for Milady DeWinter/Mary, while Athos/Dr Watson (the former husband), and Aramis/Mycroft look on. The fourth musketeer should have been Lestrade, but as a police officer he cannot condone private justice, so was left out of it.

Well, I'm firmly in the camp of "they're up to something", I just don't know what. I find it significant that Martin used words very similar to Ben's when talking about the likelihood of going on. Maybe they're just trying to warn us it could be five/ten years instead of three, but we've always known that; this seems different.

 

My latest theory is that they've already secretly filmed S5 and they're just trying to psych us out. :D

I like that theory, Arcadia.  They have said for years that they had five series plotted out in their heads, and you can't tell me that this thing doesn't go at least that far.  It would be an absolute hoot if the last episode ended with a title card that said: Sherlock S5, Coming June 2017.

That makes me think that it might be Carol who's on the right track ... it's not the show that's over, it's just the current 4-season plot line that's over. Never mind that they forgot to tell us there was a 4-season plot line! :P Now I'm doubly prepared for there to be no cliff hanger this time. Which may be a good thing.....

My bet is, 'the other one'- and it has to do with the antagonism between Mycroft and Sherlock too.

It seems that however S4 ends, it creates a wrap-up/reveal to some story threads and probably in some way creates the potential for a story break, much in the way TRF created a 2-yr break before S3.  Since they aleady have S5 plotted out, then I think we can safely say that it will not be its own separate thing but will relate back to S4 perfectly.
