They are simply being conservative in what they can say or can't say because only BBC can commission another series, and that is definitely not going to happen until sometime after S4 airs.  However, although Ben and Martin have projects lined up for the next 2 years or so, anything beyond that is iffy.  That's the way the business works.  I'd almost say that any film work lined up after the next year is iffy (unless it's the MCU) because that's the way the industry is... you lose stars, you gain stars, you lose funding, you have scheduling conflicts, etc.  That's why it's really not so difficult for Hartswood to put them on the docket for say, three years from now but just not admit it.  They have to have enough time and space to get all their players lined up at the same time.  Believe me, they have that going on.

Speculation aside ... here's a couple of lovely pics of Ben and Martin acting silly at a recent screening of episode 1. After all the gloomy doomy promotional photos, it's nice to see them looking so happy and relaxed.

My bet is, 'the other one'- and it has to do with the antagonism between Mycroft and Sherlock too.

My bet is on "the other one" too. As for Moriarty, I think Sherlock actually does miss him in a way.

I predict the fandom will think of a million questions that Moftiss didn't even know needed answers. :d

I just hope that they are serious about finishing open issues.

Really, though, how many truly open issues are there?  Off the top of my head, I can only think of two: Redbeard and "the other one."  Maybe how deep did Moriarty's network really go and how much of it is left?  I'm sure there are more, but those are the only things I can really think of.

Some of the other issues that people cite don't personally bother me, because something happened off screen to fix them:

  • How did Sherlock escape from murder charges against CAM?  If they don't address it this season, then something happened off screen to get him off.
  • What was on the AGRA flash drive? John doesn't care; he threw it in the fire, so something happened on screen.
  • What happened in Serbia?  Off screen
  • How did Sherlock really survive the fall?  Off screen

Not trying to make little of the question, because I really do want to hear what people would like resolved.  But for me, it is enough on most things for the creators to acknowledge that loose ends were wrapped up some other time, once the meat of the issue had been used in an episode.  YMMV.

Yes, the Case of the Upset Mummy definitely needs to be, er, wrapped up. :D

Holee creamsicles. Are we going to survive this season?

I doubt we will, so I suggest we buy a lot of shockblankets

Nope! No need of shock blankets here! If the two masterminds go too overboard in any direction (Dr Who and Bond come to mind), then it's ' farewell, adieu, Aufwiedersehen, goodbye' as in the Sound of Music for me and back to Granada to soothe my mind and refresh my attachment to near-perfection. With the backup of Cremer's Maigret and all of Star Trek, I can watch whatever they throw at us with enough detachment not to care, unless they commit a grievous sin against their titular character. Then Smaug and Mummy Holmes combined can start to describe my reaction!

Sue Vertue has said that the stuff from Czech may be unauthorized and although it doesn't necessarily contain spoilers, not to share it.  Unfortunately that horse has left the barn and gifs are now all over Twitter.  Quite frankly, however, there is nothing in it that we also didn't witness with Setlock.

I also think  that any footage in any trailer we have seen is only from 4.1 and 4.2.  They are keeping 4.3 under tight wraps.

One shock blanket per episode.

Only ONE???!!!

Well in The Dying Detective SH is in bed pretending to be dying, but in from the scenes we've seen via Setlock in The Lying Detective, SH is clearly not bedridden, but he does look quite bedraggled.
