I just want to make cleart that it's me wandering in the maze, not Mycroft! :D  I agree with Fox, any maze we encounter is probably of Mycroft's own making......

One thing I'm pretty sure we all agree on for S4 ... more Lestrade!

He! Yeah, I understand, but somehow Mycroft got trapped there, and couldn't get out, and the thought was so funny that we all had to build on the idea. :P

Indeed: More Lestrade. I wonder, though, what it is about him that is so apparently universally appealing. We don't see that much of him, and there's little character arc... Personally, I find him very believable; sort of down-to-earth, and a real brotherly quality to him. Sort of like an older brother to Sherlock, in a way that Mycroft is incapable of being. A good friend of John's as well. He's always there, doesn't take up much screen time, but we get the feeling he's really got his friends' backs. At present, I find him perhaps the most underappreciated person in Sherlock's life. Well, Mrs. Hudson can compete for that title. Molly got her comeback in s3. Wonder if it will come for the other two...

I just like the way he handles Sherlock, for one thing. Firm but kind. And respectful, as long as S. behaves. Oh gawd, there I go again, everything's always about Sherlock.....

Sigh... yes, that's how it feels. He knows too much. I  like Mycroft's character - I'm not fond of his personalilty, but I think he's got an interesting dynamic with Sherlock - because he serves to shine a light on the intricacy of Sherlock's character. However, it annoys me that he can just snap his fingers and get Sherlock out of trouble. Dull.

Right, at least twice in Series 3 alone, kinda like Tolkien's damned Eagles.  I just hope they don't (continue to?) overuse that aspect of Mycroft, or the plots will become pretty pointless.

They do seem to be drawn to a sort of James Bond-ish element at times, don't they? Hope they resist .....

"The Eagles have come!"

Ah, yes. However much I love Lord of the Rings, don't get me started on the plot holes in that! :D Fortunately, it's fantasy, and I don't take all of it literally.

You'd make a good Game of Thrones reader, Tim .

Indeed... I am sure I'm not willing to wait that long.

I do wish they'd wrap the whole thing up with series 4. The cast won't become any easier to get together, will they? And I am obsessed with endings and finished stories. But oh well, I can always rest contented with the end of series 3, that isn't too bad, as endings go...

I'm getting more and more fond of the idea that Mary is a kind of Moran figure and worked for Moriarty at some point. That wouldn't necessarily have to make her a "bad guy", not at all, I wouldn't want that, I think. But it'd make more sense of that "assassin" background, which seems a bit random to me otherwise. I just like things to be connected, I guess. (I love things to be connected. Nothing delights me more than discovering that the dozens of threads in a complicated story I have been following all come together in one big gorgeous pattern in the end).

In that case, the "James" in that strange text from Magnussen (the one with the skip code) could refer to James Moriarty, couldn't it? That'd be another instance of making sense of something. I would so love for that message to be more than just random words arranged around the code.

And while we're at it: I finally want to know what "IOU" was supposed to be about and I want to know how the hell Sherlock thought he could get Moriarty to call off the snipers! They didn't half finish with following up The Reichenbach Fall, in my humble opinion... That episode still breaks my brain.

Nooooooooo!   What a depressing thought I sure hope they do not wrap it up with Series 4.  I have seen or read (can't remember) interviews where they said they would like to continue on this series for a very long time.  Just pop in on the characters even if it is sporadically.  Benedict once said he would like to still be doing Holmes in his 60's.  I hope they continue on this series for as long as they can, even if they have to be increasingly further apart.  I'd even take a one-off special every five years.  Because to have these guys portraying these characters from beginning right up to "old age" would be the most, like, epic thing imaginable ever.  lol.  No but it would.

Don't mention wrap ups or endings, PLEASE. :sherlock:

So, how long does it take to film one episode of Sherlock ?  It would be interesting to see copies of Mr. Cumberbatch's and Mr. Freeman's business calendars for the next 2 years.  Whenever I type the BC name into Google, it says he's doing this and doing that and doing something else ... I'm amazed he even knows who he is when he wakes up in the morning ... maybe he's had himself cloned or something :o .  LOL !  In any event, some kind of annual Sherlock event would be nice ... it doesn't have to be a three episode series but one episode every 9-10 months would be lovely.  Enough to keep interest up and provide an equal number of months of discussion here :sherlock: .  Of course, if it takes months to film one episode, it wouldn't work.

Wasn't it just Jim's warning/reminder to Sherlock that "he owes him a fall?" And a countdown, in a way. Three IOU's, which mark Jim's three "targets," the apple to mark John, the one outside to mark Mrs. Hudson, and the one at the police headquarters, well, to mark Lestrade.

There are very elaborate theories on it, and if one wants to read more into it, I suppose eva-christine's theory is one of the best. If you are interested in that. Link above which combines chemistry, fairy tales and ciphers. It is a very interesting read :) I don't buy it completely, but it certainly has its merit.

I, too, think that the fall still is not over. Sure, in canon Doyle smoothed over that, too (more or less smoothly, though). But they already went deeper into it than Doyle did, so it is harder to leave things be, imo. It is not mysterious anymore, they gave too much information already.

And you can give everything an interesting twist by changing the details around the fall. I doubt the writers can resist that in the long run.

Even better than the Harry Potter movies! Literally seeing those kids grow up was amazing -- but the whole series covered only seven years. Sherlock could cover decades!

The actual filming takes a little over one month per episode, so if they did just one, it would take only a month or so of the actors' time. But some of the other stuff would still take just as long -- rebuilding 221B and (assuming one main author) writing the script.  So I suspect we'll continue to see three episodes every few years.

Plus I think they like having 3 episodes to spread a "story arc" over. (I know I do. :) )

I don't know, it doesn't really bother me to wait a couple of years, especially if that means the quality stays up. But then, I've had a lot of chances to practice patience in my life ... :(

Unfortunately, I seem to have a short attention span and I'm afraid I'll have gone in another direction in two years.  Having discovered Sherlock late last year and having all three series kind of follow one after the other has made it easier for me as I haven't had to sit through the waiting period yet.  I'll just have to schedule periodic re-watching ... there's always something new to discover ... thank goodness for DVDs !

In a recent interview with Steven Moffat he has said that it is only this sporadic, spread out type of schedule that even allows the show to go on.  That if the series was filmed with more episodes and on a more regular basis they would have lost Benedict and Martin by now.  So, as hard as it is, I think we all should just embrace the wait...it is the only thing allowing this show to go on (and hopefully on and on and on and on).  The wait ensures we will have more.

So let's all take a deep breath, slowly exhale and repeat "the wait is our friend, the wait is our friend."  :D

I heard BC say they film the three episodes consecutively and it takes about 3-1/2 weeks per episodes with a few days off between, so basically the actors need to find a 3-month available time block where they are available at the same time, and 3 months is hard to come by for busy actors.  However, they are all committed to continuing to do it.  I'm anticipating not seeing more for another 18 months minimum.  Ugh.

Absolute minimum, I think.  Moftiss are now claiming that "it's always been two years" between series -- which it hasn't, but I suspect they're trying to get us resigned to that sort of a wait.

That's what I thought two years ago (and what I warned Tim when he asked me to be a Mod).  But I'm still here, though it's been touch-and-go a few times (I think this is the longest stretch I've ever been this active on one forum).  So maybe you'll still be here for Series 4 too -- or hopefully you'll at least be back!  (Or maybe I'll have finally wandered off?)

Oh heaven forbid that we should lose anyone. I would really hate to see you go, Carol. You have been a mentor of sorts.

Yeah, we may run out of things to discuss before the time they start filming series 4 and the first pics appear (though I rather doubt we'll reach any consensus on Mary any time soon) but we can still serve as an addicts-on-withdrawal self help group in the meantime .

I'm really afraid of the day when series 4 airs.

In series 1 all the three episodes made me gasp (1, 2, 3)

In series 2 there were only two of them (1 and 3)

And in series 3 only one was just that exciting (3)

3, 2, 1...

I hope that's not going to be 0 brilliant episodes in the series 4 :(
