OK! ( deep breath) On we go : what if ( a great big IF) they are doing the Dying Detective in reverse? No time travel needed, no Dr Who (hate the whole thing, except the season with Peter Cushing!) nothing but Sherlock coming back to confront Moriarty ( or whoever sent that gif) and getting infected with a modern-day version of the exotic fever, say Ebola, so the whole Victorian storyline is his hallucination, because this time he was not careful enough not to get infected in the first place?

No. :p

Based on what they've said so far, and on the teaser that was released, here's my best guess.... there will be no explanation. It will be the same show, but in a Victorian setting. I think Sherlock will be a "sociopath" and John will tell him when he's been a bit not good. I fully expect jokes like "wouldn't it be nice if there were a device where we could send each other messages without having to leave the flat?"

I also expect to laugh my you-know-what off, gorge on it for a few weeks, then probably never watch it again except during the darkest days of future hiatuses (hiati? ) -- because it won't have a single thing to do with the "story arc" of the other episodes!

The only thing I can't figure out is how they're going to reveal the truth behind the Moriarty gif. I predict that's been postponed to the first episode of season 4. I wish I could find Mark's exact wording on that; he promised the explanation would come out, but did he specifically say during the special, or during the "next episode"?

The semi-animated "Miss me?" image that appeared simultaneously on every screen in the country.

Arcadia, remember that the Setlock photos included a few of John and Mary in the same clothing they were wearing when last seen at the airfield.  So there will apparently be some contemporary scenes in addition to the Victorian story.

I thought it was The Special...but I have been known to be wrong!

I thought it was the special too, I just can't figure out how they'll get from one to the other "without explanation." Well, we shall see, we shall see .... (For example, I suppose Moftiss could be fibbing about "no explanation....." )

Maybe we could get Mary to tell us if he is -- she knows when Sherlock's fibbing....  ;)

That's the impression I got as well, and if it's true, then I think that's kind of sad. Also unnecessary - there would be plenty of possible ways to tie the Special in with the rest of the series.

As for what Mark Gatiss promised... They also promised they would fully explain The Fall. ;)

Which they did!

(Sorry, slow internet is making the use of emoticoms impossible!)

If Carol's right, they explained it a little too fully! :D

I get the impression it was this one-shot special or nothing, so I'll take it just for the priviledge of watching our boys at play. (Quite frankly, they could do Jersey Shore and I'd watch it....) It'll be fine ... something special to watch when you want to be entertained but don't want to invest in a 4.5 hour storyline!

Maybe that's why they're calling it a "special."  :D

I think they're also placating the BBC, which would apparently love to have a new series every year.

Won't make the lead actors anymore available or willing.

We have to share them and be patient.

YEP! One is off for the latest Marvel film, the other works 24/7 at anything, Andrew gets involved in the latest Bond, one of the writers is in Game of Thrones and a play, but at least Benedict has said in interviews that he is willing to play Sherlock until he's too old to remember his lines. No such comment from Martin, but the main problem remains the source material, which is intractable to modernisation in some cases.

I diagree and trust Mark and Steven to deliver!

Hey, my emoticoms are working now!

I'm still waiting on the date so I can start an annoying countdown...

Annoy away! I'll join you.

Unfortunately -- or is it fortunately? -- I doubt that you'll be able to start the countdown much above 30 days.

It's approximately 100 days! Exactly like Napoleon's return from Elba, And everyone knows how that ended: in grief and tears and exile!

I think we're more interested in when we can start counting than how long we have to count .... :p
