My work blocks it!

Summary, please!  :)  I can't get it to play on my phone, either.

The good news, Sitty, if it's live streaming, you should be able to watch it at any time when you find a device that works.

Exciting days, finally! After all this tortured waiting. I love the teaser/trailer, my god that episode looks like it will be great fun! I can definitely see The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes and some Granada Holmes there, which is always good news.

The full extent of my passion is reignited :D

I missed most of it :(

Well, I think I've lost it. Was clapping my hands in front of the laptop. There is a new term born: fanfood. :D

Somebody actually asked if Steven intends to have a cameo! Are we under surveillance?...

I feel you. As I was watching this, I was like: well, there goes the rest of my sanity

The thing with cameos is that they're a bit self-indulgent and remove the viewer temporarily from the story.  Alfred Hitchcock is in all his films in a cameo and you begin to look for the cameos.  Oh, there's Alfred.  I find them distracting.

Unbelievably, I think I fell asleep during the second half ... THAT is how tired I am. (kicks self) Was enjoying the heck out of it, too. Lovely people, all.

I just hope the scene was a part of the Special, not a kind of funny spin-off.

That same question had occurred to me, and my hope parallels yours.  So far, the main reason I think this is a clip from the actual Special is that, as you point out later, we are never told what's in Watson's basket.  Unless I'm missing an obvious interpretation (and yeah, maybe we're supposed to assume....), then that's a loose end, meaning that this is not just a self-contained Sherlock sketch.

It seems that while others are reading up on the original cases, I will finally have to force myself to watch some other adaptations. Not only the Jeremy Brett one, but also it seems that The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes is heavily referenced just in that little clip, so I suppose I'll have to give that a peak as well. It's almost like homework! :D

I wouldn't say that either of those earlier adaptations is heavily referenced here.  There's a hint of the Brett music at the beginning, and apparently the Private Life music as well, but I don't offhand see any other references to those adaptations, just to the original stories.

... Holmes, Watson and Mrs Hudson are pretty much themselves. That doesn't have to be the case for all the characters from the modern version, though - little Archie seemed to be some kind of a page boy, meaning he could be Billy, the page from the late stories....

I didn't know this before either, but in British weddings the traditional role for little boys (who would be ringbearers in the US) is something called a "page boy," so Archie has always been one in Sherlock. (And since they were going to use the name "Billy" for Wiggins, they had to call him something else.)

What we don't know is who is living at Baker Street. My guess is only Holmes, because Mrs Hudson addresses just him when she talks about coming home. (Plus we've seen pictures of Mary, so it seems that Watson is already married in this version).

Well, she could be just his girlfriend or his nurse, couldn't she? We might finally get to see how the two characters meet! Besides, Mrs. Hudson traditionally addresses her complaints to Holmes, apparently considering him to be the man in charge (and/or the chief troublemaker).

The Special might be just one piece, because it ate the budget normally used for a whole season. Or even more. That's why the delay of S4.

Actually, I suspect that the main reason for the Special is to keep the BBC (and coincidentally the fans) somewhat placated between "real" series. So it's not a shrunken series, it's an extra episode.

All in all, if they used this bait to get the firmly embedded Victorian stories out of their system by then proceeding to ridicule them, as is Mr Moffatt's MO, I shan't care if they film a million sequels after it!

The costume is a cross between their beloved film, where Holmes goes nowhere without his Inverness cape and deerstalker, even in town (Wilder carelessness) and the Granada series with his suit and peculiar black tie knot , not to mention the loud chequered suit, going against his "quiet primness of dress". The telling little point was BC alighting from the carriage with his pipe, not Sherlock's customary walking stick. In the stories, he resorts to cigarettes for short distances, the pipe is to be enjoyed, savoured, at home or at moments of leisure. So, if this is the theme, they started off wrong-footed or deliberately misleading, take your pick! Simply unthinkable, but possible!

More like a gentle parody, I would think.  The pipe is a Holmes cliche, the walking stick is not.

The beginning of The Private Life is rather similar to this teaser, the script at least: Mrs. Hudson asking Holmes to please tell her when they're returning so as to prepare meals in advance, Holmes saying it couldn't be predicted, complaints about Watson's writings, complaints about the illustrator... The basket Watson is carrying is there as well, and it looks the same.

Thanks, Lady Vengeance, it's been a while since I saw the movie (once).  What was in the basket?

There was no word about that in the film, I think :D But I assume it's body parts (a head?), in pure Holmesian fashion :S
