Hmm, wasn't it Sherlock who said that the cousin hates Mary?  Mary was thinking of seating her at the head table before he said that, but changed her mind immediately when he presented his evidence.  I'm thinking, though, that this is the same man who thinks that all of John's friends hate John (but I suspect that his evidence there was considerably weaker).

Yeah, he even did the deduction about licking the envelope or some such nonsense.

I thought maybe "John's cousin" was a veiled reference to the Johnlock fans.... :P But I like your interpretation better!

I am not an Johnlocker, but I don't mind sitting with them, it's closer to the exit and I can leave the wedding early with Sherlock.

And what if we missed the continually female-bashing tendency of Mr Moffat's, so that dear Irene is revealed to have been behind the Moriarty communique that turned the plane back from its final destination and Sherlock's demise? A life saved for another, and she would have been too far away to know about the drug mixture despite "visiting" him in hospital? She was techno-savvy, and where she wasn't she knew people who knew what to do, or at least, she knew what they liked!

Just saw this come up on Tumblr, haven't seen this billboard mentioned before (though admittedly I may have just missed it)

oh my god I’m rewatching HLV and just look at the billboard behind them

tumblr_inline_o4uyppDWta1r9qjek_540.png

“information is the power to change”?????

and the price of the book??????????

tumblr_inline_o4uyqbYYu61r9qjek_540.png

1895?????????????!!!!!!????????!!!!!!???????? #TJLC

THAT PRICE WWJSJAJAJAJHAAhwuuwuehwnnamsmsjaahsjehwjwu m on a loose my F***ING NJND KSKSJSJS

Okay TOTALLY STRETCHING HERE THAT I’M TOUCHING THE MOON:

The first line: Now FREE for 3

Can we interpret that as either 3 more episodes until they’re free? That would make it becoming canon in S4E2…

Or, now that they’ve done 3 seasons, they’re now free to amp up the arc? The Power to Change 1895 was TAB, and it jumpstarted the next part of the arc… or they’ll free finally after 3 episodes?

I don’t know, numbers are always important in this series, and I couldn’t help but notice that 3. It’s niggling at my brain.

I’m completely reaching here, so don’t take what I say seriously, lol.

Hehe, totally understanding you. You should see me jumping as I realized that we have had two contemporary Holmses cast in the Danny Boyle's Frankenstein. :D I can completely go bananas about such things, internally jumping around like a 5 years old.

Don't have time to analyze though, I will come back later.

A kind of validated interpretation of this billboard is "Information is Power" reference to CAM. But I don't remember anyone mentioning the price.

Well, how can they expect that anybody takes anything that ever shows in Sherlock for a coincidence.

Some things are coincidental - the only problem is to take them apart. I can almost hear Moftiss saying: good luck with this. :lol4:

Of course you can also read it as "Now free information is the power to change", and it makes sense (if you are an optimist and not too picky about the proper English), but not necessarily for HLV.

I know TAB came out after all this started but surely modern day John saying to Sherlock in the carriage: "Sherlock, tell me where my bloody wife is you pompous prick or I'll punch your lights out!" has to mean something. Is Mary going to go missing - kidnapped or on the run? Also it's an incredibly harsh way for John to talk to Sherlock, almost like he blames him for Mary going missing. I know it's all in Sherlock's head, but there has to be a reason for it. Again, probably already been discussed earlier, but I never really registered just how harsh it was before until I saw it pointed out.

Yes, that line jarred with me as well. I know guys can talk really rough to each other sometimes without meaning anything by it, so maybe it's no more than that; but that line was unusually harsh for this show, I thought. Definitely called attention to itself.

Still, TAB was mostly about how Sherlock sees the others, and how he thinks they see him; so I'm wary of reading any foreshadowing into it. Besides, Moffat's "missed it" remark was made well before they even thought of doing TAB, iircc. He's referencing something we missed in Season 3. My money's still on the reference to "death threats" from TSo3. Not much money, though. :d

Yep, I know it's post Moffat comment, I think it's just the fact Victorian John changes to Modern John to be so nasty that really grabs me. Ah well, anything to keep the conversations going for another year until we have new material to mull over ;)

Yes, there is something strikingly wrong/out of place/out of character about that line. Also a bit in the line about breaking bones. But I cannot put a finger on it either.

Did modern John EVER threaten Sherlock? I mean he attacked him, or insulted him, but I don't remember him ever shaking his fist and promising violence to anyone. Or have I deleted this?

Definitely not that I remember. Where was the bit about breaking bones?

Posted

Ah that, I just took that as an extension of the 'I was a soldier... I had bad days!' though yes, looking at it now, full out saying about breaking bones is more sinister

Posted

Ah, I think the breaking bones line was indeed meant to be a humorous reference.

I think overall John was more -- hostile? -- in S3. I'm thinking of the "drama queen" moment in TSo3, I thought he was a bit over the line there too (although Sherlock's reaction was priceless, and saved the scene, imo). So maybe they are going somewhere with it? Although it seems to me they've already covered that territory enough, I'm ready for the amazed, supportive John to return.

Yes, definitely more hostile. I get why John hit him in TEH, especially the way Sherlock seemed to treat his return like a joke (though the way he looks so nervous when John slams hit fist on the table hurts me a bit), but I would have loved to have seen John hug him or something after he calmed down. It feels like he's not even all that happy Sherlock is back, or at least not willing to show it. :(

Somehow I can't edit my post, it happens sometimes on my phone. Forgive me for possibilities of messy posts today.

@Pseudonym

Yes, I'm with you.

Although I understand John's initial reaction, I don't get why he continues to be so angry. Sherlock doesn't handle it well, but he has valid reason to do what he did and yah, he is back.

I guess John is that angry because his grief was very intense and that shows how much he cares for Sherlock. But it's not everyday that wishing someone stops being dead comes true, he should at least try to understand better, after all, it's Sherlock. Normal behaviour is not his forte.

So I agree with Sherlock, he is overreacting. XD :p

About John being so angry in TAB, I still see it as Sherlock being too hard on himself, he sees himself as unlikeable and probably deserves that kind of harshness, because deep down he probably feels guilty about everything he doesn't really understand but comes out wrong and creates discomfort to John, like TRF, he apologizes to him again and in his mind, John is still angry with him.

I do think there's also an element of ... well, sometimes men show their affection for each other by being verbally rough with each other. Actually, my best friend and I are a little verbally rough with each other sometimes; we enjoy the jousting. To an outsider, though, it can seem too rough. I have to remind her to dial it back a bit when outsiders are around.

Even so, John's default mode seems too often to be anger, I'd like to see a greater range of responses. I did like that he started to stand up for Sherlock when Mycroft accused "little brother" of taking drugs (too bad Mycroft turned out to be right); and one of my favorite moments is when Lord Carmichael moves threateningly towards Holmes, and Watson steps between them protectively. That's the John I like to see. And in his defense ... Sherlock really IS a handful! :d

One of the things I have been wondering is when in ASIP Sherlock responds "Which one?" when John mentions that he had met one of Sherlock's arch enemies, and this is before he even knew of Moriarty.  So I do wonder how many arch enemies Sherlock has.

Unfortunately, we have no idea what goes on in the creators' heads, but if you are looking for more arch-enemies in ACD canon, you will find Baron Gruner in the Illustrious Client, Colonel Sebastian Moran in The Empty House, and Isadora Klein in The Three Gables, who gets dismissed with: "She's a woman, Watson, she's not Moriarty!"

Posted

I just take the 'which one' as him knowing he is much more likely to make enemies than friends, so he's not really surprised John might have met one.

I'm still dubious we've missed anything :)

I believe when Sherlock asks which one, John only says 'enemy'.

Arch enemy is only mentioned after that.

To me it sounded as if he was proud of his many enemies and showing off. :P
