So we know we all like Mr Sherlock Holmes, but which other sleuths do you also admire?

(As there's no way I could possibly think of all fictional detectives, any that you can think of that aren't in the poll, add them below and I'll add them to the poll)

You may vote for as many as you wish. ;)

(We have now reached 20 choices, any further additions require another question in the poll. We can have 3 questions per poll, each with up to 20 choices.)

Harry Dresden! I absolutely adore the character, and it's not just because James Marsters reads the audiobooks. The whole series is really well written, there are very interesting moments of character deconstruction, nobody is as white or as black as they appear when we first meet it, and the Sidhe and other Faes are hilarious at times.

And I'm stupidly fond of Inspector Gadget and his way of messing up. And I love Brain (although he was never called that when I watched in Spanish, but never mind. I'm still translating half my childhood, please bear with me).

I do enjoy Agatha Christie's sleuths as well, although I find some of the stories quite predictable... And I do like Lewis, but I think that has something to do with Hathaway's sarcasm as well...

I adore Harry Dresden and I'm rather fond of Dirk Gently, but he isn't on your list.

ETA - he is now. Vote adjusted accordingly. :boing:

First, could you amplify the directions at the top of the poll, to say that we may vote for as many as we like, or up to such-and-such a number, or whatever the de facto rule actually is? Thanks!

Oh, good, I'm glad you're willing to add some of our other other favorite detectives as well. How about:

(Thomas) Magnum, P.I.

Remington Steele

Lord Peter Wimsey

Nero Wolfe

And if you really mean any detectives other than Sherlock Holmes -- how about D.I. Greg Lestrade? Or am I taking you too literally?

Is this limited to actual detectives (police or private), -- or can we also nominate lawyers, writers, insurance investigators, et al., who act like detectives but technically are not? For example:

Jessica Fletcher (of Murder, She Wrote)

Perry Mason

(Ben) Matlock

(Horace) Rumpole (of the Bailey)

If that's too many, please let me know, and I'll prioritize my list.

Added: If the poll list gets much longer, you might want to alphabetize it.

My favorites are (not in order):

Bobby Goren (Law and Order: CI)

David Creegen (Touching Evil UK and US)

Michael "Mike" Britten (Awake)

Angel [He is a private detective] (Angel)

Nick Knight (Forever Knight)

Charlie Crews (Life)

Eliiot Stabler (Law and Order: SVU)

Bo [Adding a bit of GIRL POWER here] (Lost Girl)

Carol Jordan [and here!] (Wire in the Blood)

There's probably more but I just can't recall them right now.

I like them all for differnt reasons but I like them all.

Bruce Wayne. You've forgotten Bruce Wayne. The self proclaimed word's greatest detective.

And though not exactly a true detective but someone who has set out on an investigation of his own, I'd have to pick a certain Leonard Shelby from the neo-noir film Memento. His ailment makes his journey all the more memorable. For those who haven't seen Memento, I urge you to do so.

Oh, and I would also have to choose FBI Agents Will Graham and Clarice Starling from the Hannibal Lecter series of books. Will Graham in particular with his absolute morbid imagination that can make anyone cringe. I do insist that those who haven't should read Red Dragon if they have nothing else to do.

I don't think even three times 20 are enough for all our favourite detectives. Just for starters, I'm missing C. Auguste Dupin and Decius Metellus.

Charlie Crews, very much.  (Played by another British public school boy.)  If the writer's strike hadn't happened, I'm sure the show would have been HUGE and gone on for years.  May be best for Mr.Lewis that it did not.  I rewatch it on Netflix all the time.

Monk.  The writers seemed to be as smart as their detective.

And what about Inspector John J. Fadoozle, the world's number one  *boing!*  private eye?

(... just a little blast from the past for all you Howdy Doody fans!)

Well, when my sister and I were little we thought that my mom was seriously going to marry Magnum, so I have to go with him :)

Love Miss Marple and Poirot. Another sleuth you forgot is kick-ass Veronica Mars, she's awesome!

No one can compete with Sherlock Holmes, but if you leave him out of the question: How about... Phillip Marlowe?

If anybody is interested in both detective stories and historical fiction, here's a recommendation: The Judge Dee series by R. van Gulik:
