Basically, he's an evil scientist who tries to kill Holmes via poison. I have always thought he would be very tempting to update as someone who makes / uses bioweapons.

 

Seriously, I am thrilled. After Moriarty and Milverton, this is exactly the villain I would have tackled next if adapting the stories was my job.

Wonder what they'll call the episode?  "The Crying Detective"?  (Benedict Cumberbatch could do justice to that.)  "The Frying Detective"?  (There's a heat wave in London -- all the way up to 85 degrees, maybe!)  "The Lying Detective"?  (Seen that before!)  "The Prying Detective" or "The Spying Detective"?  (Sherlock once more sticks his nose where it doesn't belong.)  Or just keep it as "The Dying Detective."  (Sherlock decides to dye his hair light auburn.  ;) )

But he can't retire to the bees... that bit was passed off to Janine...  This version of Sherlock would probably be a good 20 years from retiring anyhow unless the criminal classes get incredibly boring...

You never know with Sherlock. He could just be putting on an act. That's how the original story goes, anyhow (everybody go read it, it's great).

Well, if those are Christmas lights, then at least a year has passed since the end of HLV, and that means there will be some good opportunities for time gap fillers in fan fic.  :D

Maybe the leaves-less ones are plastic trees, the sort that you can see in malls at Christmas. Long distance filming in that kind of light, you needs eagle's eyes to spot the differences.
