I remember thinking it was weird Vivian was there in the first place. I don't think it blended in as well as they hoped. I thought if this is a beyond top secret meeting why the hell is there a secretary taking minutes? If it needs to be recorded then do it digitally.

^ this.

I went so far to wonder if the fourth alias was meant for her, and not for Sherlock.

Same here, and I'm still wondering the same thing ... Sherlock's not in the government, so why would he get a codename? At any rate, someone blabbed, because Lestrade seemed to know all about it. In fact ... since John was a witness to the shooting, why wasn't he included in the meeting? Heck, he could even be called an accessory to the crime, he's the one who brought the gun.

And what about the dozen+ other witnesses in the form of the "squaddies", how do they ensure their silence? Or Norbury, for that matter? Maybe she'll use the information to plea bargain?

Gah, this episode makes me crazy......

Question ... near the end of this episode, just after Mary's cremation, there's a closeup of John's phone ringing, and he's ignoring it. What's the significance of that? Are we supposed to know who's calling? My first thought was the girl, but since they never go anywhere with it ....

Posted

I can't remember that scene very well. Aren't we supposed to think it's Sherlock?

Posted

Well, that was my second thought, and if it is, the significance is obvious. But how were we supposed to know that?

Posted

Yet another offscreen assumption we're supposed to make

I wonder if the fact it's written by men is why so many emotional payoffs are left out.

Posted

Ha, I was just thinking that over in John's thread ... how often do we get to see any emotional issues resolved, and is it because the show's written by men? It gets really annoying, sometimes ... tell me again why I love the show so much? :p

Posted

Since it's written by men about men you would think the emotional payoff would be good and realistic, but they just seen to miss it out completely.

TLD had a good emotional payoff and I think we're supposed to believe TEH had one as well. The only emotional payoffs I can think of are specific to Sherlock and John's friendship.

If you ladies are still discussing code names, anyone familiar with ACD canon, in this case The Valley of Fear, would recognise that Antarctica is Mycroft aka The Ice Man ^_^ , Love turns out to be Lady Smallwood, Pike is Sir Edwin and Porlock is evidently Mrs Norbury, since Porlock was Sherlock Holmes's inside man in the Moriarty web, hence a traitor.

Ex-ACT-lyyyy!

Well, not really, but I couldn't resist.

LOL! I think it's because it's the only Sherlock relationship the writers really value, hold as sacrosanct.

I always thought the phone was either Sherlock or Mycroft. Probably Sherlock, though.

By 'the girl' are you referring to Eve (Euros disguised as the lady on the bus)? I presumed it was her phoning John because John sent her a parting message right before Sherlock figured out that Norbury was the culprit.

Posted

I don't know what her name is, I've seen her referred to as just "E" or "Elizabeth", but I don't know where either of those names came from. I miss a lot.

At any rate, I thought the same thing you did. But when nothing ever came of it, it made me wonder if I'd misunderstood. I mean, why show the phone ringing if it ends up not meaning anything.

So I guess it makes more sense that it's supposed to be Sherlock calling. But I find it weird that they didn't make it clear.

By the way, does anyone know, is cremation common in the UK? It's not here, judging from the nearby national cemetery. Somehow it seemed even sadder that John didn't even have a body to bury. But maybe that's a cultural thing?

Posted

Okay I feel like I've missed something important. When/where is it said that Mary was cremated?

Posted

At the end, after Norbury is led away, they show a coffin going into the fire. :( Then I think the next scene is John walking through the graveyard. Does that help?

Posted

Thanks. I didn't make the connection. Guess it's time to watch again.

I think Elizabeth is the name of the therapist, I've only seen the woman on the bus referred to as E though.

Yea cremation is pretty common. I don't know that the split it between burial and cremation, but both is common.

It's interesting Sherlock wasn't cremated actually. Easiest way to hide a fake/lack of a body.

He may have been, no way to know. Well, not him, of course ... :d

You don't normally have a big gravestone like that if you're cremated. Not that I'm aware of anyway.

I know, but exceptions have been made in that regard.
