I know he was told that, but I suspect it was still a deciding factor given he looks nothing like BC. It's not the kid's fault, if was just him it wouldn't be so bad, it's when taking it into consideration with all the other familial casting choices it gets a bit much. I'm surprised they seem to get to do their own casting so much, I thought those types of things generally had to go through casting directors (not the main characters, but minor ones).

In regards to it being the end or not, I doubt they even know. They might decide it's the end but in the future if everyone's careers have cooled a bit it might come back. Also they might have some vague idea of what they might want to do but everyone is too busy with other projects and it never comes to fruition. It's not such a long time period but Luther was apparently done and dusted, until it suddenly wasn't and came back.

Has anyone else heard that story about how 'the network' (the report I saw was American, so I don't know if that's referring to BBC bigwigs or some other facet) didn't want BC cast as Sherlock because he was 'too ugly' and they were promised a 'sexy Sherlock Holmes, not him.' I stumbled across something about it yesterday and found it surprising, yea he's odd but far from hideous.

Yep, heard that story many times, although I don't recall that anyone called BC "too ugly", just "not sexy."

I wish I could remember what and where, but I saw a snippet of the Moftisses being interviewed, and Stephen was saying the show "could come back" and Mark was shaking his head slightly, like "no, I think it's done." And their interviews in general have been like that; Moffat saying "it could come back" and Gatiss saying "it might be done." They mean the same thing, but the emphasis is different. And both BC and MF used the "it might be done" construction.

So I'm leaning towards ... it's done. Except maybe another one shot or two well in the future.

I'm sorry to hear that if it is really over. I do agree Gatiss seems more convinced than Moffat. They clearly could have more stories to tell, but at least they ended it (if they did) in a way that was respectful to all the characters and left them in a good place.

Still hoping for a special though! In retrospect I enjoyed TAB as much as most of the official season 4.

I thought I'd be sad if I thought it finished but I don't know if I'm that bothered weirdly. Maybe because the last one was disappointing.

Germans say: "A painful end is better than an endless pain."

Which is the first thing I felt about Sherlock - It would be much better to end it (even considering HLV an open end), than having the series dying a long and painful death à la LOST.

So I think it's okay, as S4 seem to lack… something. Something that was essential to the series at the beginning.

Ben is getting older. I don't think Sherlock will go on that even if it goes on, it will be after a long time. :/

I think I've gone on and on often enough about how I am really happy the series has an ending now and that this was what was missing for me to make my enjoyment complete, so I won't elaborate on that again.

Just saw The Final Problem again and had so much fun. I see it as one long fan-indulgence orgy and as such, I find it highly gratifying. Such an episode wouldn't have worked anywhere in between, but as a grand finale, it's really quite wonderful in my eyes.

I am so happy they didn't send Sherlock off into retirement with the bees. Maybe they think the original "ending" just as depressing as I do? I've always wanted an "and they solved crimes happily ever after" sort of goodbye.

Can't quite make up my mind whether Sherlock genuinely felt sorry for Euros in the end or whether he had just figured out how to play her. I think a bit of both.

 "Sherlock Holmes the pirate" - one of many little scenes that just made me squeal with joy. Even if it was only a rickety little fishing boat, at least that childhood dream came true. Too bad poor little Victor wasn't around to witness it. But oh well, John was, and I guess he's kind of his reincarnation.

At least everyone is terrifically willing to make more episodes.

I'm cynical by nature but I wonder how true that is, they could just be doing the right thing PR wise. Then again Matt Damen didn't want to do any more Bourne movies after the third one but ended up doing a fourth after his big budget movie exposure had cooled so you just never know what the future holds.

Same here. I'm sad, but not as sad as I thought I'd be. And for the same reason, but also because they left us in a good place, where we can imagine it going almost any way we want it too.

I've thought that too ... since Ben doesn't look like a kid anymore :) a little bit of the fun has gone out of the character. I miss seeing him bouncing on the furniture and jumping over railings.

I still find it weird he looks so much older, especially because he doesn't look so old in interviews etc. He looks significantly older in T6T than he does in TAB. We normally see Holmes in his late forties or fifties in most adaptations, though it's not as fun. Going by the stunts he's still in doing in other things I think he might have a railing or two left in him ;)

I still wish they'd done more when he was young though. :(

Well Benedict Cumberbatch did have to get the wise old look for Dr. Strange so I don't find it strange that he looks older in Season 4.

Honestly I'm more concerned about John's hairstyle.  :bart:

I think Dr. Strange looks a lot older than pre-Season 4 Sherlock.

I mean look at how he's depicted in some scenes:

If Benedict Cumberbatch had to look like this while filming Dr. Strange then I can see why he looks older in Season 4 of Sherlock (which began filming right after filming for Dr. Strange was finished).

It's amazing to me how different BC looks depending on his hairstyle. I know everyone will say that about anyone but for BC it seems a lot more pronounced.

I think he looks worn down and beaten rather than old per se. Maybe it depends on our ages and what we consider old.

Yup, his hairstyle definitely makes a huge difference.

For what it's worth, I was surprised at how different he looked even from the "modern" scenes in TAB. I mean, there, he looked like he did in S3. TST is supposedly a few days later, but he looks very different, and it's not just age. It's really weird, when they've taken such care about these things in previous seasons.

And he looks like "himself" again in TLD, in spite of the stubble and the shorter hair. I still maintain this difference is due to makeup and lighting, and someone should have caught it. Alas, my impulse is to think they simply stopped caring.

He's weirdly tanned in it for one.

How old is Eurus in The Final Problem?

Posted

She's a year younger than Sherlock, who's about the same age as the actor who plays him, who is 40.

Moriarty said that "Did you miss me?"

How is meaning?

Sherlock can lose sight of him, can't he?
