Waiting for new carpet to be installed.  Of course they gave us the earliest window possible...and they still aren't here... ugh.

So I'm sort of settled into this little flat even though I don't have a stick of furniture of my ownl  But it's not a problem.  I've been sleeping on the floor the last 2 weeks ever since the lilo popped a hole too big to be repaired, but I'm getting a proper bed tomorrow!  yay!

It's not really my flat.  I'm just sort of "camping" here, even though I've been here for 4 months.  It's a nice 2-bedroom flat that came with 2 Siamese cats.  They are the permanent residents here, much more permanent than me.  No one had lived here for over a year, maybe even 2 years, except for the cats, and the landlady refused to rent it to anyone who wouldn't agree to live with the cats.  So she had been using it for extra storage space.  I've known the landlady for 15 years, as we used to attend the same church.  She hasn't charged me any rent to be here, but after these few desperately needed upgrades to make it more habitable, the will charge me for rental of the one bedroom ONLY, not the rest of the flat.  Because she still stores stuff here, and it's still the cats' home first.  I can earn enough $$$ working here for her during the week that my basic life needs are covered.  Plus I have a ton of freedom to write... although lately that has been curtailed in favor of interior painting.  I've been painting and painting... some days my arm wants to practically fall off.  Once the walls are all done, then I will be working on painting the wood cabinets in the kitchen and then also the cement floor in the cats' bedroom. (I get paid for doing all of that.)  Then it will be onto doing eBay for her...

...and in the meantime I get to keep writing!

I probably won't be on the forum as often because I accidentally got hooked on Instagram  since I'm gonna go back into playing video games. If only my ancient PS2 would cooperate...  :(

Jenny, I like your landlady.  She definitely has her priorities straight -- the cats were there first!

Bendy -- go and have fun, but don't forget where we live!

Don't worry! I'll still be active, just maybe not as much, okay? All's well.

Also, my notifications thingy on here is a bit wonky. Won't tell me if someone quotes my post.

Mine's doing the same thing I noticed today.

What does happen?  I assume you've had it set up for some time to notify you of quotes -- correct?  So basically, it just stopped doing that recently?  Or do you still get notified sometimes but not others?  Any information might be helpful.

Could one of you please go to the Bugs & Problems area and post this problem, along with anything you can think of that might be relevant?  Thanks!

Will post it in a bit on the correct thread once I get back on my computer.

Just in case I'm not the only one who's been wondering:

British acting legend Bill Nighy is very used to people mispronouncing his surname, with his father supposedly absolutely hating the mistake. The star of 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest' has often stated that his name is pronounced 'nye' yet he often smiles sweetly whenever someone mispronounces his name and shrugs it off.

In an interview with Nighy, he talked about it saying: "My father used to squirm on the sofa when everybody would say Ni-ey. It used to drive him insane. I gave up. I get Nigey, Nigley, Nigee, Nigby. The first time I was ever in the newspaper I was Nigby. I'm sure everybody gets a weird name. I don't mind. You can call me nearly anything you like."

But he can't be Bill "Nye", we already have one! I'm sticking with Ni-ey, sorry Bill!

True, he's not the Science Guy -- but he's had the pronunciation six years longer!  :P

Of course, he won't care how you pronounce his name -- just don't call him late for dinner!

I just read this on a blog and it is definitely my quote for the day, if not the month or the year:

Academia is basically medieval classics fandom institutionalized

:D :D :D :D :D

Ugh!  ITunes is driving me crazy.  Deleting it and reinstalling it don't help.  Been there, done that.  If I turn on any program after a fresh boot before Itunes, Itunes will not play any thing.  Nor will anything play on Youtube or any animated gif if Itunes isn't working.

Except today.  Fresh boot, and the thing still freezes up if I try to play any music.  It was for this reason that I had to recently replace all my downloaded films there with hard copies.

Any techies on this forum who might have an idea of what is going on?

I know, I love my iPod but I hate iTunes.

sfm, I'm not a techie but it sounds like you might have a software conflict? Have you tried Apple support?

If you look for an alternative media player - I would recommend VLC open source player

On my Mac it plays DVDs, and also DVDs copied on my HD and according to the makers also a bunch of other multimedia files.

But the most useful feature so far is the possibility to actually slow down (or speed up) the movie you watch, and - what is much more important - it slows the sound without changing the pitch. So you still recognize music and voices as such with hardly audible lost of quality.

Firstly it allows you to listen to the fastest deductions and actually follow them, even if your English is not so good, secondly it gives you time to pay more attention to Sherlock's facial expressions that are often so quick that you miss them by just blinking.

The other nice feature that is missing on the Apple DVD player - you can make screenshots without extra software.
