IS IT IN ANOTHER THREAD?!  Did everyone see Gatiss's tweet about a treat heading our way at midnight UK time?!?!

No, didn't see that.  Hmm.  Did he happen to mention Sherlock?

Added:  Yup -- hashtag #Sherlock.  Here's the tweet.

While they sure don't look like Sherlock and John, they really do kinda look like Holmes and Watson!  :D

Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my... They look absolutely perfect. They look amazing. Oh my god, after the special, I can finally make my own ACD Sherlock Holmes book with the images, and this will be on the cover. I am so happy and excited.

From back when they were filming the Special (just a sampling of the suggestions):

There are signs/arrows around town that say "WIM LOC." Is WIM possibly the ep title? What would WIM stand for?

Where Is Moriarty?

Who Is Mary?

Watson Is Moriarty

Any more ideas?  (Come on, guys -- we've still got five or six months to go!)

Right! And what if it is just one of Sherlock's hallucinations, driving him to unravel a cold case (about a 120 years cold one?)! Then the idea will have been magpied from the Morse series, and I shall need that flamethrower thingie dear Carol showed me! Plus, it's shameless magpying of the Granada series!

And he's wearing the striped trousers Rumpole has had to put up with his entire life as a barrister! ^_^

But where is OUR SHERLOCK!?! cry1.gif

Can it be that Special is meant as a "standard" Sherlock Holmes story?

No harpooning dead pigs, no outbursts of boredom, no not decent dancing and jumping? Do I really want to see this?

Where is Mycroft? I cannot recall seeing him on any of Setlock photos...

But -- but -- but -- harpooning dead pigs, outbursts of boredom, and dancing and jumping are all canon -- Moftiss lifted them directly from Conan Doyle!  So even though Sherlock's got a different hairdo and John has fur on his face, I expect the characters to be quite recognizable -- give or take a "my dear Watson"!

Dear J.P. , a morning spent harpooning dead pigs is very much ACD Sherlock, in the Black Peter story, getting bored out of his mind and shooting the wall is in the Musgrave Ritual, jumping over pieces of his own furniture is in several stories, and Mycroft appears in only three stories, The Greek Interpreter, (never could get enough of the retort: Children, my dear boy, children!

as he corrects Sherlock's observation in their eternal game), the Final Problem and The Bruce-Partington Plans. So, either Mycroft's scenes were all in the studio or he won't be involved in the case.

Added bonuses are no flipping curls on him and a moustache on Dr Watson, finally! And one can hope for a cutting "Elementary!" remark.

And the way Benedict is sitting, I can't see if he has Irene's sovereign on his watch chain, as he should. Aargh!

I'm still not sure how I feel about all this.  Like I'm glad to see any Sherlock, but I can't really envision where they are going with this, and it's making me uneasy.

ETA:  And yeah, I don't remember seeing any pics of Gatiss in costume, so either no Mycroft or Mycroft only had indoor scenes filmed away from prying eyes?

They did say that the Special would resolve the Moriarty question, but I don't remember any set pictures released from the airport and Mary was seen covered in black, not in her red coat. It's the waiting game from now on, especially since it won't be aired at the same time in every country! Of course, there should be less profile shooting, because Benedict really does not have the typical Holmes profile.

I love the promo pic. I was very wary last night because, well, hiatus takes its toll lol but I think they look great there. Apparently, some people are disappointed that John has facial hair (there are also images of him clean-shaven though, so don't panic) and Sherlock has no curls, but this isn't 21st c. Sherlock so wasn't it expected? They look a lot like Jeremy Brett and David Burke out of the Granada Sherlock Holmes adaptation, and they look as Victorian as they must!

I hope they'll give specific details, or give us a tiny sneak peek, at the Comic Con tonight, I'm too eager right now to settle for their usual ambiguity :S

I feel the same... But every time I see pictures of the cast in period clothing, I am over the moon. The special is guaranteed to give me some joy over the visuals, at least, so I have decided to look forward to it.

Of course I prefer Sherlock with curls and John with a hairless face! But these aren't really Sherlock and John, they look like Holmes and Watson, and I have always wanted to know what these fantastic actors would be like in a more traditional Sherlock Holmes setting, so it's a wish come true for me.

Speaking ahead of a Sherlock panel at Comic-Con later, Moffat said the 90-minute episode would be "a different version of the show we're used to".

"It's like we checked the books and discovered we'd set it in the wrong time period by mistake and it's like we're correcting it," he said.

"We're really proud of it, we think it's a real cracker. But that'll be it until series four."

Mary and John were seen in their airport clothes during filming for the special ... but not at the airport: https://mobile.twitter.com/Anythingbatch/status/557207224175824897/photo/4

I'm pretty sure Moffat has said the Moriarty alive/dead question would be answered in the special.

Gatiss has now posted that something more substantial is going down at 12:15 am UK time.... Sherlock related
