Oh, lovely! A new member who can jump right in the fun and speculation! Welcome!

@ Arcadia dear, it's the same Mary who wears stunning evening dresses, gossamer lace bridal gowns and shoots a 50p piece instead of the shadowy character in the chair in front of her, because, if Sherlock hadn't stopped her with his quip about Scotland Yard, she would have shot her own husband! Very nice girl for any proud friend or spouse, indeed, unless we are turning schizophrenic in here, always a possibility!

Schizophrenic? Isn't that just another word for Sherlockian?

Dear Arcadia, speak for yourself! While nowhere near your dear Mary's standards, I have had rifle practice since the age of eight, went on to win competitions with air guns as a teenager, and accompanied my uncle when he went shooting with his friends. It was always a thrill for me when he handed me his hand-tooled, 20s vintage Saint-Etienne repeater carbine. Handguns need special permits, but hunting guns are more attainable, and can shoot a hole through anybody that no itsy-bitty surgery can repair, like in HLV.

I do think he has a sex life.  Either he meets up with Irene occasionally, as Toby suggests, or he had an occasional friend with benefits, or something like that.

Might Molly fit in there somewhere? She said in "Last Vow" that Sherlock uses her home as one of his boltholes, and he doesn't just crash on the couch, he takes over her bedroom because "we agreed that he needed the space" -- yah, uh-huh. So if Sherlock told her that "men have needs," mightn't she agree to help him in that area as well? Before / after Tom, she might be feeling kinda needy herself, and therefore willing to ignore the little voice that says "You'll be sorry!"

And who knows, maybe she isn't sorry.     Maybe.

Hey, I heard that guys have to have sex at least once a week to avoid erectile dysfunction. So... yeah.

Anybody else recall back when the movie euphemism for erectile dysfunction was "war injury"?  (Apparently the enemy was using heat-seeking bullets.)  Nowadays, they advertise it on television!

I was willing to entertain that notion until their "date" in TEH. I can't quite reconcile the behaviour of those two people with people who had been intimate at one time.

Er ... no? (or perhaps it just went over my youthful little head...)

Under no circumstance do I ever get the indication from the show that Sherlock and Molly had been intimate simply because he used her flat as a bolt hole...although I do find it strange that he did go there.  However, I don't necessarily see her throwing herself at him or demanding anything from him.  Perhaps it will be better explained in S4.

Except for ASIB and the beginning of the mind palace in Magnussen's office, we don't see Molly outside of the hospital environment.  I hope we can see her in new environments in S4.

What? Okay, that means either my husband is cheating on me or he's some kind of lucky exception. Or... oh, I don't want to know, really... :P

Anyway. Sherlock is a unique fictional character, so why would any of this have to apply to him, even if it were true? Even if every single real man had to have a sex life, why need he?

He does have feelings for Molly, I am quite sure. I doubt they are of a romantic nature, though, and I seriously doubt he wants to sleep with her. She doesn't seem to be his type, at least not if you assume his type is Irene Adler and Janine... I do think he thought Janine attractive - he classified her as "beautiful" during his wedding speech, after all - but that didn't save her from being used by him in a pretty nasty manner. I don't think he'd have done something like that to Molly. Although... he's Sherlock. You never know.

Sorry, I didn't phrase that very clearly, did I? I didn't mean to imply that just because he sometimes hid out in her bedroom, I assumed they had been intimate (though I might assume that with a typical man). What I intended to say was that if he's sufficiently persuasive to convince her to relinquish her bedroom, mightn't he also be persuasive enough to convince her to tend to his physical urges?

Nor did I intend to imply that I thought she would take advantage of the privacy to throw herself at him. I think that under those circumstances, she'd actually go out of her way to avoid giving him any such impression. My question was, mightn't he try to convince her that they could engage in purely physical activity to their mutual benefit, without it affecting their friendship?

Assuming that he ever actually does anything resembling sex with another person, that is.

I'm trying to think how persuasive he'd have to be to get her to give up her bedroom. I'm not sure it would take that much. Persuading her to be "friends with benefits" though -- I dunno. She doesn't strike me as the type to find that appealing. And he doesn't strike me as the type to make such an approach. Not to Molly, at any rate.

I don't think Molly would go for having sex with Sherlock just to tend to his urges.  I think she wants something more meaningful than that from him, and I don't think he'd ever approach her like that despite some fanfics which seem to think she'd do anything he asked her to do.  That woman has definitely got some wherewithall.  She may get his coffee, but help him get his rocks off just because he has needs, no.  But I do think he could persuade her to give up her bedroom.

I should add that I think he's perfectly capable of handling (pun unintentionally intended) that situation by himself if he needs release.

That rumor was originated by a man!  :D

I saw it on the internet, so it must be true! As well as Mel's Hole in Washington and the Well to Hell and the Alexandra's Genesis mutation!

Want to bet how long Sherlock can stand to be nice to a timid romantic partner who does not give some sort of challenge to keep him interested? Because that's exactly what Molly Hooper projected most of the time, and Sherlock himself is not the nurturing type.

I think mousy Molly days are over.  It is my belief that in S4 we will see that she is not ordinary but extraordinary.

Posted

Ah, but will she still be "our" Molly? The one who represents us everyday kind of girls?

I hope you're right, actually, but I think a lot of people will be disappointed in the results.

Well, with Louise being such a strong feminist in the real world, I just wouldn't be surprised if she didn't work some of that strength into Molly as if to say at least metaphorically that all women are extraordinary.

Yes, and we know how uniformly people interpret subtext in this show! :D

I just think if she loses her mousiness, she won't be quite the same character any more, instead she'll become one of those characters girls are supposed to aspire to be ... poised, accomplished, assertive, etc. Which is good in it's way, but it's not what Molly's represented up until now. So far she's been professionally competent without also having to be socially adept, and I've enjoyed seeing a character like that who isn't also just a joke line. On the other hand, she's getting a bit old to still be harboring a schoolgirl crush, I'd like to see her grow. Some more, I mean, I think she's already grown some.

Well, I have said it to myself several times. It didn't help. And I am a bit older that Molly. big-grin.gif
