Once again, I wish I could ask that we go back to discussing actual series 4 news, but since there is no news...

I don't think John's (or Mary's, for that matter) screen time during the trailer / teaser is a reliable indicator of his actual screen time during the episodes. The Sherlock trailers have never given away much about the upcoming series.

As for the picture of the violin with the broken string, I take that to merely mean some kind of tragedy and upheaval is coming, and they have hinted at that before. I predict that series 4 will stir me up quite a bit. But I don't expect any of the main characters to die. Not for real, anyway.

A broken violin string is specifically supposed to represent a death in the family.

D'you mean in general, Bev? (Is it a traditional superstition?) Or did somebody connected with the show say that it means that for S4?

Well, if it is a death in the family, how about "the other one"? He or she may be already dead or might die during series 4. Seems more probable to me than killing off any of the regular characters.

Strange that two different countries have the same superstition! When I asked my grand mere about the broken violin string, she immediately crossed herself (sort of 'far away from us' ) and said it represents a death in the family. The question remains: in the Watson family (Abominable Mary/baby) or the Holmes family, since we know both brothers and their parents will be in the show? Where is a shock blanket when one needs one?

As for the 'other one', Mycroft specifically named them using the past tense in HLV.

As I recall, he said "You know what happened to the other one." That could mean any number of things -- s/he went to prison, for example -- rather than meaning that s/he has (already) died.

But while we're naming family members, let's not forget Harry -- though I hope it's not her (seems like she's bound to come in handy as a live character every now and then, plus I'd really like to meet her). But there's also John's cousin by the bogs -- I'd say she's expendable!

I just got told that it meant that, I personally have never heard of it before!

I haven't either, and I can't seem to find it on the internet -- though there is mention of a Chinese superstition that breaking a string on an instrument means that (unspecified) bad things will happen.

Sticking the hate-filled cousin by the bogs in SoT means putting her at a table near the WC, and as for the elusive Harriet, who knows!

Killing off Harry would be pointless - she hasn't even made an appearance yet.

If anyone is going to die (besides one of the villains), my bet is still on "the other one". Or Mary - and then, last minute, we find out she isn't dead after all. Or something like that.

Personally I wonder if the broken violin string will represent Sherlock.  Because I have a feeling he's really going to go through the wringer in S4.

You may be right. After all, it's presumably Sherlock's violin. They may simply be implying that he's about to "come unstrung."

I could see the broken string representing a severed relationship.

It could be Sherlock/John, Sherlock/Mycroft or John/Mary.

The thing is, if it were about John and Mary, I would guess Sherlock to be somehow the cause, through something that happens on a case, or through Mary deciding John is more loyal to Sherlock than to herself. Mary and John already have trust issues, how much more would it take to tear them apart?

Because Sherlock is the player of the violin, to me the metaphor works better if he somehow causes the breakage- and a broken string seems like unintended collateral damage, in the course of playing a piece/ solving a crime.

New Pictures!

Mycroft has a new tie and new suit.

Sherlock's scarf is the same as S3 and it looks like the buttonhole photographed by Arwel once is the one from the Carpet's collar - it has a bit of an unusual form. :D Did Sherlock ever had a light blue shirt before?

I think he was wearing a light blue shirt when he came back from harpooning the pig, which I only know because I watched it a couple of days ago, I haven't memorised all his outfits or anything. Honestly.  ;)

At least we know what the building is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabinet_Office

It's the place where the CAM hearing took place and also the discussion about Sherlock's fate in HLV.

About D-notice https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DA-Notice Classified for 100 years?!

But why it's on such a big board? It has Lady Smallwood signature and SH… in the case number.

I know there was speculation on Tumblr that the D notice was on Sherlock shooting Magnussen because if it was classified exactly what happened it's easier to keep him out of jail.

EDIT:

There's this pic too which I didn't notice on the last link, though I might have just missed it. The way Sherlock is looking at the baby is pretty funny :D

New Pictures!

Thank god.

Although I notice they all look older, harder, and grimmer.

Which reminds me, I recently saw this comparison somewhere; Sherlock yesterday and today, so to speak....

So the fans can read it and go nuts speculating about it, of course. Duh. ;)

They really need to think these things through. If we all go nuts and we're locked away who's going to watch their show?
