Maybe it's Sherlock's new catch phrase. "Holmes! How the devil did you deduce that?" "Absolutely no idea, my dear Watson!" :d

Just going to link to the "other forum". Article in "Crime Scene Magazine" about S4. Not much new here, except for a few snippets near the end. http://sherlock.boardhost.com/viewtopic.php?pid=273190#p273190

Most interesting to me: (probably don't really need spoiler boxes, but just in case):

From Mark:

"... Mary is pregnant, which changes everything. The unofficial title of the first episode is 'The Three Watsons' because the baby alters the dynamic, not in a cutesy way but because it's a different place to put the characters."

And from Amanda

"It's about Sherlock and John, and I don't want Mary to become the third wheel. I want the show to be about them, really. And I think the fans do as well. If it was called Mary, it would be a different thing. That would be a spinoff about her life as an assassin and how she got into it."

Which I could easily take to mean they will NOT be addressing her past in S4 to any great degree. If true ... good choice, boys! :D

Oh, and this from Ben is kind of interesting too:

"I love it more than ever. I also love the character more now because I've got to experiment with playing different sides of him." {In S4, Sherlock is} "troubled and challenged, at the top of his game and at the very bottom. So there are huge highs and huge lows, and you really find out who he is."

Pretty sure they're going to touch on Mary's past to an extent just based off the fact we see her with a gun doing a spy/assassin type role. Don't think we'll ever know a huge amount about her history but it looks like something is coming back to bite her.

Or could be she's helping to defeat the villain du jour.

I want them to address Mary's past. She's really most interesting to me as a case, a kind of client for Sherlock.

They have to tell us about Mary's past! Come on, they've put a lot of mystery around that girl and I'm pretty sure it is quite illegal to leave such an interesting (and frustrating, I add) case unsolved!

Please, don't remind me of the 'other' place! It's a whole different world, and Joanneta is a member, and as I was a bit fangirling with Ariane de Vere over at Tumblr and mentioned how life-saving her transcripts have been to OUR Hangman game, she got all curious and joined there, where she was promptly mobbed by equally devoted fans, just of a different mentality. And I specified 'Sherlockforum', but there you are! Mea culpa!

Anyway the air dates have been released, January 1, 8, 15. Some lovely Sunday stuff coming soon, 9 pm. GMT.

I note BC's Richard III is going to be on Christmas night, which means I'm going to miss it (and really, why would I want to watch that play, of all plays, on Christmas?) But I've already informed my family they are forbidden from engaging with me on New Year's and the two Sundays after, unless they agree to sit quietly in the room with me while Sherlock's on.

Just thought you all ought to know that. :P  And I'll catch Richard on one of the re-broadcasts. Life is good. For two weeks, and then it's hiatus hell again ... remind me again why I do this to myself?

Are you saying that Richard III is on PBS Dec. 25?

Yes ma'am! Henry VI Part I on 12/11, Part 2 on 12/18, RIII on Christmas. I assume when/if they are rebroadcast is mostly up to the individual PBS stations, so you might want to check the website for your local PBS channel. It's part of Masterpiece, so you might have to search for that, or possibly for The Hollow Crown. I couldn't get it to pop up under Richard III, but I did find it under Masterpiece on our local channel's site.

You realise we're not the best people to ask since we all do it too  :(

Actually, even the first broadcast seems to be dependent on your station. I see one of ours is airing it on the 11th, and one ain't. And I had to search under "Great Performances". Gotta love PBS. :)

I know hollow crown shows up under great performances when checking pbs.org. As for S4, my local pbs as it listed as thus: 1/1 9et, 1/8 9et with episode 1 rebroadcast at 7:30et, 1/15 7:30et because the new series Victoria starring Jenna Coleman premieres at 9et. So be prepared US Sherlockians for a crazy 3 Sundays.

PBS & IMDb show them as 90 minutes.  If the channel has commercials then it would take 120 minutes to show it all because of the commercial breaks.  Also my local PBS shows the initial airing of Sherlock in a 2 hour block for some reason but the re-airing is the normal 90 minute.

Apparently there is a plot summary for the 1st episode on IMDb.  You can check it out if you wish.  I'm not going to post it here for those that really want to avoid it at all costs.

Hey, it's Auntie Beeb, this side of the pond! No commercials except short breaks to show future content, so they must be at least 100 minutes long! Each episode an almost-film! Respect!

RE: Six Thatchers; even Anderson must have figured out by now that they are a stand-in for the original Six Napoleon busts of the ACD story, no spoiler alerts necessary!

Why would people let the insignificance of Christmas interfere with their TV viewing?  Priorities, people.  Ha!

Seriously. The Hollow Crown would make excellent, high quality family viewing...altho a bit violent for the squeamish!

I saw something about this, though I can't remember where, that the length is the normal 90min, but with ads etc they're padding it out.

Posted

Here's what I remember ... the first two seasons of Sherlock on PBS had scenes edited out in order to fit them into the 90-minute time slot, due to PBS needing some time to thank its sponsors (i.e., run ads  ). For S3, PBS extended the time slot to 2 hours, showed the full episodes, and padded out the remaining time with "behind the scenes of Sherlock" videos. I'm assuming that's what they'll do for S4.

In the rebroadcasts of S3 they simply ditched the ads and the videos, and ran it in a 1.5 hour slot, I think. ? (Maybe?) Also they have a lot of "filler" content now; snippets from Antiques Roadshow, and things like that, so some of the stations will simply add on one or two of those if a program runs short. PBS isn't like the commercial networks; what you see, when, and how often depends in part on what the station can afford. So while WETA, for example, might rebroadcast Sherlock 4 or 5 times a week, with or without the "making of" videos, WMPT might only show it twice. WHUT only showed it once, as far as I know, and on a different schedule than the others. All depends on how generous your donors are.

Technically, the program isn't even called Sherlock on PBS ... it's "Masterpiece", and Sherlock is just one of many different stories they broadcast during that time slot. I think Upstairs Downstairs was a Masterpiece offering, as is Poldark and the upcoming Victoria. Actually, I think Sherlock usually runs as part of "Masterpiece Mystery", which is sort of a separate program from "Masterpiece" but really isn't. It's all very confusing, I still haven't worked it out and I've lived with it most of my life! It can actually be quite difficult to find out what's going to be on any given week. If I weren't on this forum, I'd have no clue about either Sherlock or Richard III.

Odd ... the Masterpiece schedule currently only has one episode of Sherlock scheduled, on Jan 1. Nothing's listed for Jan 8, and "Victoria" starts on the 15th, when you'd think the third Sherlock episode would be aired. Hm, no idea what that means.

I wish they were broadcasting on a Friday or Saturday, Sunday night is going to be a right pain.

Masterpiece has 3 categories: classic (e.g. Downton Abbey & other period pieces), mystery (e.g. Sherlock and the likes), & contemporary (everything else that doesn't fit in the first 2).

Yeah the first one is a holiday night, the other two are works nights but who cares?!
