Actually, Besley, I personally think it will be more like five.  But I think that whatever they've written they've done in such a way that they could pick up on a normal-ish timeline, or they could accommodate a longer hiatus either in real time, in universe, or both.

They need to be careful they don't wait too long or people are going to stop caring. There are loads of series and books I used to love that took so long bringing out the next part that I totally lost interest and don't watch/read anymore.

I used to think that about Supernatural and I really couldn't give a shite about it now.

Yep.  I was crazy about the Earth's Children series of books (Clan of the Cave Bear, etc.), and my understanding was that the series would include six books.  I think she stopped at four and now it's been so long I don't much care, although I still pick up the first couple from time to time.

So, I know I've seen this on here, but I'll spoiler block it just in case, since I just now saw it all over Twitter and Facebook. (Mods, unspoiler it if it isn't needed.)

Episode three is called The Final Problem.

If so, I still think that's not indicative of much.

First of all, I am a Sherlock Holmes fan above all, so I don't care if he comes in the guise of Jeremy Brett, Basil Rathbone, Basil the Mouse Detective or even a vegetable form. I'll watch anything Sherlock-related at least once, and then go back for a second helping if it is humorous and reasonably well-made.

But a 125-year spoiler cannot be the death of Mary Dear, because it would be 1881 when the event or situation occurred, and that's right about when they first meet and shortly after go on a hunt for the Agra treasure.

Re the title, hardly worth the build up they gave it is it? My reaction is meh.

Pseud, Bev, and Boton, I'm with you guys regarding the need to digest before discussing. So I may not be around for a few days/weeks in January -- just a heads-up to the other mods. Good thing Arcadia likes to discuss first thing!

As for what's gonna happen and why and what then -- I frankly don't see the point of getting upset about what it *might* be. I'm interested in seeing how they've adapted canon to their own warped creative standards. (Then I'll get upset! ;) )

That's sort of what I was saying earlier ... the waiting can become numbing after awhile, and eventually I just stop caring. Of course, there's never been a show quite like this either. Well, we shall see what we shall see.

I doubt if Mark meant exactly 125 years, I would assume he meant "roughly 125."

Well, we'll see! But if my reaction is anything what it was like to TAB, I'll be eager to share asap. If it leaves me feeling as depressed as the last election, you may never see me again! :d

Okay, there's a short clip from what appears to be 4.1 in this Martin Freeman/Steven Colbert interview.

I suppose it's still the working title that appeared at IMDB in a project list of one of the hired actors. Unless it happened yesterday, no official title was revealed yet. All other titles in the series were altered, I expect it happen to the last one too.

ETA: well, apparently it is official now.

There was a clip revealed at the Colbert Show yesterday according to Tumblr (wasn't to other places yet) Nothing spoilery, it's like the funny clip we've got for TAB last year. http://naturalshocks.tumblr.com/post/154282463083/new-sherlock-4-clip-from-stephen-colbert-show

Aaaaand…

it seems that there will be a screening of E3 in Canadian theathers. When it comes to Sherlock and BC, Germany makes me feel like living on Mars already. :(

Yes the third title was announced all over Twitter today, but *YAWN* it was already old news...

Wow, I could never stop caring about Sherlock.

I thought like this several times in my life. That feeling comes in a package with an obsession. :D

One day you might wonder why you've cared in the first place. And what to do with all that stuff you thought you couldn't live without and which  is now collecting dust somewhere on a shelf.  :P

They're doing the cinema thing in U.K. And Ireland too.

They're doing the cinema thing in the USA too.  Luckily the theater is only 2-3 miles from me.

I don't think anyone will want to see it with me,no one I know is as into it as much as I am. That's fine though, I think I would rather see it on tv.

Thanks for that link! I could only watch it on my teeny little phone but it was still cool. Did anybody get who the lady was next to Sherlock in the Baker St scene?

The only woman I noticed next to him was reaching for his hair, so I assume it was Claire. Did you spot something I didn't?

No, I didn't. I just couldn't see very well on my little screen. All I noticed was a woman next to him for a split second, but I couldn't make out whether it was a character or a member of the production team. So yeah, Claire makes perfect sense. Thank you!

I find I'm getting a bit numb to it all. Not that I'm not looking forward to seeing the new series, but some of the bubbly excitement about this show that I was still feeling as recently as this summer has faded ever since Ben started talking about "feeling like it's complete", or however he said it. Now this. If they're really not going to make much effort to go forward any time soon, I guess it's kinder to start preparing us for that. But it's taking some of the glow off being a fan, for me, somehow.

 Being in love with a work of fiction is a lot like being in love with a person, for me at least. I've been past the bubbly crush state for a while now with Sherlock, but that's okay. I'm more of a fan of the later stages of love anyway. He'll take his place among works like The Lord of the Rings or the old Star Wars trilogy and I'll get him out every other year, dust him off and go "awwww, weren't those good times" in front of my TV. I don't fall out of love with things (or people) once I've become really attached to them.

What can the 125-year-old spoiler be, that he's talking about?

Well, there aren't many major plot points that they haven't used already. There's Mary's death (or "loss", whatever you want to take that to mean, if Watson was even referring to her there), yes. There's Holmes' retirement in Sussex. There's Moriarty's brother of the same name (ugh).

Didn't he mention this in reference to The Six Thatchers specifically? Maybe he just meant the solution to that case, implying that they hadn't changed it from the original?

So, I'm probably about to be proven wrong in 3 weeks, but whatever....

I think if they get rid of Mary and/or the baby (which I think is well within the realm of possibility), they almost have to have John either blame Sherlock or the Work for the deaths.  He has to somehow think that if he/they hadn't put Mary in a dangerous position somehow (even if they didn't, even if she volunteered), that she would still be alive. That would create the dramatic tension needed to create a hiatus, and I do believe that, even with all of the modernization and the playing with timeline, they do basically follow ACD canon.  Canon calls for there to be periods where Holmes and Watson aren't working together for whatever reason.

If Mary/baby died in a random plane crash on their way back from a holiday in Greece or something, then the natural thing would be for John to seek refuge with Sherlock while he dealt with the loss. That would obviously be a boon for Johnlock fan fiction, but I don't get the sense from any interview I've read or seen over the entire show run that they are trying to get John and Sherlock to "reset" into 221B together relatively easily after making so much effort to get John married with a baby.

FWIW, (and yes, I'm bringing up this parallel again, but hiatus boredom strikes....), House managed to do the "Mary Morstan" death and the blaming of "Holmes" and the lack of communication between H&W, and they accomplished the whole thing by using the summer episode break plus about three episodes of the subsequent season.  So, in Sherlock terms, this could easily mean that we wait three years instead of two, with maybe a special hinting at the reconciliation/reunion at the two-year mark.

Good theory. I beg to disagree, though (and we'll see who is right soon enough, so you're very welcome to laugh at me when the time comes).

I don't think they will kill either Mary or the Watson baby. Especially not the baby. If Mary had to go... anywhere (and it wouldn't have to be death, it could just be going into hiding by herself because of her enemies whom she wants to draw away from her family), John would effectively be a single dad. That would be enough for him to stop running around with Sherlock much for a while and so reason enough for a longer hiatus.

I also don't expect they will bring about another big rift between the boys and begin the next series (or standalone episode) with a great reconciliation. Because they've only just done that with The Reichenbach Fall and The Empty Hearse, it would be too repetitive. Actually, as things stand right now, Sherlock and John have already grown apart quite a bit compared to series 1 and 2 and the show should be working on bringing them together again in my opinion.

With the creators teasing "Sherrinford" and setting the stage for something dark in Sherlock's past in TAB, I expect series 4 to focus at least as much, if not more, on the Holmes family than the Watsons. My theory is that Sherlock will be brought to face his (and his brother's) demons and once he's through with that, he won't be able to continue his life at Baker St right away. Perhaps he'll take a break from detective work altogether and go live in Janine's cottage (with or without her, although romance aside, I think Sherlock needs a housekeeper of some sort). Or he'll have to travel around the world again to sort things out, or he'll have to be exiled for real because his killing of Magnussen can't be kept under wraps any more. Something like that.

Where, where is the rofl emoji on my phone? That was... Brilliant. It's still the same series, guys. Even if John has a horrible haircut.

Transcript of the clip shown on the Stephen Colbert Late Show

LESTRADE: So how's it going then, fatherhood?

JOHN: Oh good. Great. Yeah, amazing.

LESTRADE: Getting any sleep?

JOHN: Christ no.

LESTRADE: You're at the beck and call of a screaming, demanding baby, woken up at all hours to obey his every whim. (Must feel?) very different.

SHERLOCK: Sorry, what?

JOHN: Yes, well, you know how it is. All you do is clean up their mess, pat them on the head.

SHERLOCK: You two having a little joke?

JOHN: Never a word of thanks. Can't even tell people's faces apart.

SHERLOCK: This is a joke, isn't it.

LESTRADE: Yeah and it's all, "aren't you clever, you're so so clever!"

SHERLOCK: Is it about me?

LESTRADE: Do you think he's winding?

JOHN: You know, I think that really might be it.

SHERLOCK: No, don't get it.
